Emerging research suggests that paintings might be more than just pretty pictures: how we process what we see in paintings might also impact the way we process the world around us.

This is true. I was always sceptical of modern art. In fact I ridiculed a lot of it. So it was with some trepidation when I was asked by my partner to go to the Tate modern. I went but I didn't want spoil her day so I bit my lip. We spent the best part of a day there and something happened upon leaving. Outside were some trees. They'd lost all of their leaves so there was just bare twigs against the deepest blue sky. No clouds whatsoever and... ... I walk out of the Tate Modern's front doors & glance up! And I'm stopped in my tracks. I hadn't seen "Trees & Sky" I'd seen "Brown on Blue"! It took my breath away! I suddenly "got" modern art. It wasn't about what you see. It was about what modern art does to *HOW* you see! Those hours ambling about in that museum, looking at the pieces, had primed my brain for that moment as I left. It was a revelation! I'd dismissed modern art as the daubings of children. Their installations as their art school pretentiousness made flesh. But in that one moment, instead of, "No.42 Still life. Winter maples on a frosty day." I'd seen "Fractal brown & black on blue field." The fact that the blue was the sky & the brown was the trees didn't enter my thoughts as I just *FELT* the beauty of jagged brown shapes on that beautiful, soft, azure blue. At that moment names & associations of the things I was seeing had gone. It was just deeply beautiful for how it looked. It lasted for maybe 2 seconds. But in that short time I realised what the "use' of modern art is. It changes the way you see. You might not like it, you may not have it in your house, but just look at it. Read what the artist says about it. You might think they're barking mad. Liking it isn't the point. Although it can happen. Looking at it is the point...

Doesn't work that way for me, sadly. When I look at those "modern art" paintings with color splashes etc.. I may find them confusing. I may find them pretty. Sometimes I may find them frustrating, because I can't find any patterns. But they do not change the way I see the world. In that same situation I probably would go out and be on my way home without appreciating natures beauty at all. In fact the most captivating thing for me is representational art (like Winter maples on a frosty day). Like the different art styles something can be represented in are fascinating and the fact that you can see personality, kind of, in representational art (because of the artists' personal art styles) is amazing. You can draw a scene in so many different ways. Modern artworks however are all so wildly different that I don't recognize any styles or personality in them, which makes them less captivating. When I look at photographs (taken with a camera), that just capture how it is, I don't find them ugly or beautiful. I wouldn't hang any photographs on my walls if it weren't for sentimental value (and remembering beautiful moments). When I look at artworks however, I can find them ugly or beautiful, which is why I love art. But even tho I do find color splashes pretty, I still don't get modern art.

Never felt anything like that from it myself. Also, it doesn't really matter how abstract a painting is, it can still be art. However, it's value ought to at least reflect some actual SKILL. If I know an untrained 8-year old could've painted something just as good (such as a simple set of stripes, or random splashes on a canvas, or god forbid a BLANK canvas), then it winds up seeming rather unjust when stuff like that sells for millions. I mean, anyone else painting that wouldn't be able to make such easy money, simply because they don't have the favor of a bunch of gatekeepers in the art critic community. Whether the work actually means anything is an open question, but it certainly doesn't seem to have justified its value. Consider that there are doctors who've paid more for degrees and spent more years in the field doing highly skilled work - who don't make as much in a year as one of these things makes in one sale.

@@ArawnOfAnnwn Have you visited a capital city sized modern art gallery for 6 hours & tried this as an experiment? This is why I said my brain had been primed for that moment outside. Do you notice many modern art proponents saying they couldn't live without art. And those same people surrounding themselves with modern art at home, at work & visiting galleries in their spare time. Also, phrases akin to "A new way of seeing." & "This art opened my eyes!". Are they talking about trying to see colour, form & texture, as I did that autumnal day, as much as they possibly can? I have tried Psilocybe semilanceata, LSD & MDMA and that moment outside the Tate Modern very much had the feel of the psychedelics. It was fleeting & I can imagine people trying to repeat the experience. Look at the huge sums of money & the fanatical collectors. Why do they do it? I think it would be a fascinating field of study. One Interesting branch of this is schoolchildren raised in traditional homes. We'd call them benders. But there's teepees, yurts etc. It turns out that when teaching angles in mathematics ion school the kids raised in traditional homes did far, far better than the kids raised in modern homes. The research concluded that being surrounded by angles other than 90° helped them cognitively in grasping the ideas linked to many angles whereas modern homes with only 90° angles everywhere hindered these kids when learning about the mathematics linked to angles that were not right angles. Is this another pointer to this way of seeing & how the world is standardising our surroundings & debilitating how we perceive our world & even if maybe, damaging our senses when it comes to our universe as theoretical physicists talk about "seeing" their equations. It'll be interesting where this research ends up...

You can freeze it, either mentally or with a camera, to capture a moment in time, as it were. Time is an artificial construct, that is to say, something that wasn't constructed by God. We chose to have time through the wiles of Satan. It's a rendition of reality, even as our paintings are. Additionally, we can stylize our renditions. which is something we originally had the ability to do anyway, just as we froze the moment as best we could when we sought to render through painting prior to the advent of photography. The title says "paintings," but the thumbnail says "art." Which is it? One is far, _far,_ more broad than the other and I don't see anything in this video that is specific to paintings. Paintings might not even be the oldest form of art depending on when spoken stories first developed. Even without visuals, a purely spoken or written story can be no less abstract than a still image. Music without lyrics is almost inherently abstract since there is nothing to focus on other than the notes themselves, and songs with lyrics can still be nonsensical. Even if we are limiting to 2d still images, what about pencil drawings, photographs, or digital artwork? A paintbrush is one single limited tool in the vast warehouse of artistic instruments.

I've always thought 'what does it mean?', was the wrong question to ask when viewing art. The two questions we should be asking are, 'how does it make you feel?' and 'why do you feel that way?'.

I think you are touching my issue with it... it doesn't make me feel. The very idea of feeling without purpose is kind of gross to me. If I have a feeling that contradicts my thoughts, the feeling is what is less important. Feelings mean less to me than ideas.

@@D0TperiodD0T Medication can actually interfere with becoming hyperfocused, and there's more medications than just adderall used to treat ADHD. Please do research before making clueless comments--ADHD is one of the most well-researched cognitive disabilities right now, so there's no shortage of information. The past decade especially has exponentially increased the amount of available information on the condition, and as someone with ADHD, I don't want people telling me, "It's just the drugs, dude." It's not just the drugs. It's a lifetime of learning how to fit in and dealing with emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity and the inability to make decisions and anxiety and depression and being mentally understimulated and having difficulty making friends and losing jobs and being called lazy and knowing we need to do things and being unable to just make it happen like a neurotypical person. Pills don't teach skills, and skills don't replace missing brain chemicals and out of order connections, and it takes constant effort just to get by.

Maybe the people who thought the abstract painting should be displayed a year later in a gallery far away were just trying to get as much time and space as possible between themselves and that painting.

Art allows a usage of colours which impact our emotions and in turn impact the way we move. This enables movements. For example I'm in pink and orange and feel a sense of keeping sheltered rather than in the danger zone. Red.
