The young general was Muhammad Ibn Qasim and with his conquest of Sindh in 711 A.D, An autonomous Muslim state linked with the Umayyads, and later, the Abbasid Caliphate was established with jurisdiction extending over southern and central parts of present day Pakistan. Islam is now the largest and the state religion of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Pakistan has over 240 Million devotees of Islam. As much as 90% of the population follows Sunni Islam.
