Hello, I'm 36 years old and am getting ready to speak with a recruiter for the US Coast Guard Special Forces or maritime unit tomorrow at 8:30 while I ask him about it. I'm in a situation where I'm tired of working regular jobs and would like a different time and always wanted to join the military do active duty get better retirement than Reserve.

Do the reserves pay for your tuition if you want to get your bachelors while serving

Yes as of most recently they will cover $4,500 of tuition a year.

I think it's a great option. I can't tell you what I think you should do because I don't know your situation. But if you're worried about the age, I have several friends who joined after 30 and they're all glad they did. And you're still young enough to do 20-30 years and get a full retirement.

How the pay works in the coast guard, that’s just it, the pay doesn’t work in the coast guard. I was active cg for 8 years and when my daughter was born. I qualified for WIC, food stamps etc., because I didn’t make enough as an E5. The social worker at the hospital asked me if I could get a part time job. I had to explain, I can’t just leave at a certain time to unload a truck at wal mart for a couple extra bucks. That’s not how the cg works.
