Thanks Becca. So it was all OK in the end, and you will forever remember what not to do. Your honesty in this video will hopefully prevent others from making the same mistake. There are not many videos on changing old style filters, and the Haynes manual is no help either. Still, I think it's to keep the old style, because not replacing the whole can must be better for the environment. I just tried out a quick release greasing attachment, it worked OK on the track rod ends and three of the trunnion grease application points (not going to use that word here!), but one of them it just wouldn't grip on. Did a similar oil and filter change and grease up last weekend. All went OK, but when I attempted to check the gearbox oil, I found the filler plug stuck fast. I still have that to deal with...

Thanks so much for watching and taking to time to leave a comment. There's a lot of pressure to switch to the new spin offs, but you're right, it probably is better for the environment! Currently I'm still using the old style! Grease nipples can be funny little things - I've got 3 on the front suspension of mine that work perfectly with the quick release, but 1 that I really struggle with, yet my partner can always manage to get it to attach. Good luck with the gearbox oil change!

I've done plenty of the old style filters, most of the time they are a pain. I always upgrade to a spin on filter kit whenever I could.

Getting to grips with routine maintenance on our cars is a great way of getting to know them and their foibles! I think we've all had those frustrating experiences, normally in the cold and wet but it all adds to the learning experience. I think you did brilliantly and next time it'll be so much easier. 👍

Learning to accept the offer of a pop-up gazebo is certainly not a lesson I thought I'd learn on this job!

Kudos for giving it a go! I did mine for decades and it rarely went exactly to plan. lol That's part of the fun though. What I liked though, was how, with experience, roadside mishaps could be largely avoided and even the bad ones were less stressful! Personally, I only think you'll stop learning when you're dead and I wouldn't have it any other way! Great video. Keep safe!

Couldn't agree more about the experience and road side disasters! It's just having a safe place at the side of some of these roads to have a poke about that's the issue!

That is SO true! In fact I think that's the most stressful part of the breakdown!

I've a similar problem with my own oil filter recently, after fitting it 3 times. I traced it to an old oil seal that was well seated in the housing that the previous owner hadn't removed when fitting the new one. I had suggested to me to retrofit a spin on oil filter which is a lot less messy and easier to fit. Look forward to seeing your video on the NEC.

They are incredibily difficult to get out and the fit the new one! I've had those suggested to me too, but I've got a few oil filters now, so might give it another try before I go for the conversion!

Get yourself one of those oil vacuume pumps, you just push the pipe down the dipstick tube and pump it up and evacuates the sump clean and easy with no mess, I have got one and I love it.

That does sound good! my main issue with the oil filter though, which I'm not sure that would solve, might be wrong though!

Modern grease guns ala Laser, are terrible, I Bought a 2nd hand 70s job.I'll find the brand and edit this later. TBH.. the spin on conversion is SOOOO much easier to use.

Some classic pitfalls there with the oil change 🤔 I think we’ve all had to fish the filter bowl parts out of the old filter oil 😅 As part of the Avon branch I run training days, one of the first activities was an oil change. This year I will be standing back and letting the owners perform their own oil change… stepping in where necessary 🤔 I recall you are involved in MMOCYM.. or MMOC Barnsley? maybe suggest training days…

I am involved with the Young Members, but it's difficult to run training days with a national group like that, and my local branch is the Peterborough Branch, who are only recently set up, but definitely looking to find someone local who's able to run that sort of event as its so helpful!

Every day a school day. When you take the filter off why not undo the bolt part way then loosen the filter then the filter won't suddenly drop.
