When you know where and when your enemies have to rotate position or leave their post to piss, that reveals a window of opportunity for entry to a facility, or an easy elimination of a VIP target. Oh what’s that? Their top soldier goes to piss around this time leaving their place to a distracted rookie? Easy, during that time you can either eliminate the distracted pro soldier, or sneak past the rookie. Ez win. Any information is power, even just knowing pissing patterns.

As an 11b who was later in a scout platoon, I love me some 19ds who provided me with a ride back to post from the airport and even paid for my food on the way back because I lost my wallet. That said, I fell out of the small run the next morning because my unit was on block leave and I didn't figure we'd have PT so I joined in with them as they donated blood at the airport. That was a rather poor decision on my part because the next morning sucked, hard. So yeah, it was just non-combat stuff but those Joes helped me out and I'll forever be indebted to 19ds.

More like low crawling with your battle buddy for what feels like eternity just to lay prone in the mud and sent up a SALUTE report, then crawl all the way back. Recon sucks man. Definitely not as high speed as people envision it. Full battle rattle. Helmets, plate carriers, canteens, assault packs with ALLLL your shit, etc.

Motorpool, endless details. If you’re in a light unit you might actually do your job, if you’re in an armored unit they won’t know how to properly employ you, if you’re in a squadron you’ll definitely being doing your job right. But in all seriousness it entirely depends on the mission. You could do anything from reconnoitering a route or area, or sitting in an OP for days at a time, or pulling security. These tasks can range from dismounted squad patrols (which SUCK) to using an entire mounted platoon’s worth of vehicles. Scouts are kind of jack of all trades, masters of none.

Recon during my time 1. Setting ambushes 2. Fighting in the shade 3. Moving at night 4. Long missions 5. Gathering intelligence 6. Avoiding getting ambushed 7. Carry only the basics 8. Always have access to fire support That’s the basics. There’s a lot of attention to detail. A competent recce guy takes about a year to train. It was the hardest and most dangerous thing I ever did.

Former RRC guy here. Sniper section ldr for a bit too. In reality recon is getting dropped 5 miles or more from target, with 150lbs of extra gear and ammo bc if you’re compromised you and 3-5 of your buddies are fighting your own way out or to an EP , slowly low crawling vast distances, coming with feet of enemy patrols at times, living in a hide site and rotating positions with one man sleeping at a time…oh and don’t forget all your solid waste and trash has to leave with you. Minimal footprint. It’s amazing and also can be super boring.
