As a 19D myself, the main things I teach guys is to not focus on too much of what people say things are going to be like. Your time in service will be completely different than the guy right next to you. Nothing is the same for all MOS' at different duty stations. All leadership is different in their own ways so things will always be different wherever you go. Just know that you will deal with dumb shit. And if you're able to deal with dumb shit well, and can manage not to be a piece of shit and learn things instead of slack-off then you will go far..... Not all of you are going to make it, and thank God all of you won't. For those of you that do make it out of OSUT, no one is going to like you when you get to your first unit. You will get smoked a lot. But just deal with it. If you feel something is being done against Army standards in regards to how you're being treated, speak with a specialist to confirm it. Make sure you're not just being a punk. Have fun in Benning (haha)! And make sure to shake your Drill Sergeant's hand when you meet him. Enjoy your time at 5-15 cub scouts!

My brother was a cav scout. He did 3 tours in Iraq. He was a driver his first tour, then a gunner for the next two. He hates driving now. He will only drive when he absolutely has to. He was ending his last tour and getting to go back state side for some more training and he was going to have his own squad in Afghanistan but his vehicle hit an ied and he fucked his back up and got medically discharged. He said most of his job was pulling guard duty and training Iraqis. He said he’d never seen more incompetent soldiers. They’d forget half their gear, some wouldn’t have their weapons and they couldn’t go out on patrols because of that. He’s shown me videos of them training and I’ve seen more motivated and disciplined kids in gym class lmao

I went through scout training at Ft. Knox from June 85-Aug 85. My first duty station was in Germany where I was assigned to B Trp 1st Sqdrn 1st Cav 1st Reg garrisoned in Schwabach, Germany. The squadron's mission was the patrol and surveillance of the west German border with east Germany and Czech border specifically to observe any activity by the Warsaw pact which was out of the norm and of a nature that may be a precursor of to a Warsaw pact attack into western Germany. I quickly realized how fortunite I had been to have been assigned to 1-1 cav my first assignment when I was reassigned back to the states, because having served in that squadron in a real world mission, I learned the job of scout as it is done in war time and so many other things about being a scout that AIT doesn't teach and so many scouts who were conus or never served in a unit over seas that had that type of dedicated mission were not as knowledgeable of the job beyond what they learned from AIT or were trained in from a manual. In war, a scout is far forward of the regimental bound units like infantry, arty, aviation and generally receive mission's from the S-2 of areas that the command want recconed . It also such loose affiliation with regimental and/or division also allows for a great deal of operational freedom to suggest mission's to check out areas that pique our interest and offer to S-2 . Also, it is an mos that has a low survival expectancy due to the distance forward away from support and the very nature of the job, look for enemy presence, locate without being detected, report the enemy's location, size and type . Back in my day, we were also notorious for snatching up anything left alone, notoriously roudy and deviant but bottom line, we do a job that keeps everyone behind us from receiving any suprises that they don't need, want or cut their lives short. So welcome young soon to be members of the scout brotherhood from an old Cav trooper, do us and yourself proud and never, never,ever swim in a canal with your cvc helmet on or diddle the Sgt Majors daughter and enjoy.

If you want to achieve and take your job seriously you will have an amazing Memorable experience , if you don't take it seriously and fuck off all the time and get in trouble your going to have the worst time in your life and it would've been a total waste of time and honor. good Luck with your career 675 Dreamer, be safe, make awesome memories and friends, and God Bless . I’m a prior service marine trying to get into the army as a 19D. I’ve talked to a decent amount of people and people tend to keep saying ca scouts are sht bags, why? I’ve been active duty 9 years already, what’s the likelihood that I don’t end up at a heavy unit? I know Bradley’s, strykers are a part of the job, but I’d like to start off as a light ground guy first if possible. I know I don’t have much a choice, just looking for any insight. Thanks
@imjustangelic3 жыл бұрын
i don’t know much but i ship out Jan 4th for 19D and i’ve watched so many vids on the MOS so here. Pretty much the people that call the scouts shit bags are usually infantry. it’s just a rivalry thing. but yeah pretty much you’ll do your reconnaissance in a vehicle of some sort, sometimes you’ll be doing the foot patrols and stuff so it just kinda depends. every requirement for 19D is required as “heavy”. i’ve been stressing about that cause i’m a tiny guy. but also 19D is one of the top jobs for easy/fast promotions.

I was 26 when I got to my first unit. While most of the other lower enlisted guys were younger, there was still a few who were my age and even older. Dealing with younger soldiers was a pain in basic, but it won’t be so bad at your unit.

With your background you may want to look into more technical jobs like Intel, crypto, commo

Don't worry about how often you go to the field. The real issue is where you are located when you do go to the field. I'm located at JBLM... So with that being said, October through April is a shit show of rain and cold. And we dont build those basic training fighting positions when we sleep in the field on OP missions. We lay there in the rain and become one with the BIG GREEN WEENIE.

You mentioned making sure to know your 9-line MEDEVAC/CASEVAC calls. Do 19D also have to get JTAC qualified? Are you expected to know how to call for fire missions or write up CAS 9-lines? I was just wondering if Cav Scouts train in those areas or if you just usually coordinate with USAF TACPs or something. I imagine it might just depend on the situation.
@675_Dreamer5 жыл бұрын
You will be trained to call for fire and anyone in the unit should be able to do so. Although, when I deployed there was a 13F attached to us along with mortarmen who would’ve handled that. The 13F wasn’t JTAC but I’m sure he’d be the one to coordinate with the AF guys if we ever needed.
