A minor gripe about calling these sites "landfills"; as Mr Satish Sinha said, these are not landfills anymore, they're dump sites. Landfills have drainage systems to contain runoff and vent gasses in a safe manner, but of course once the landfill exceeds its capacity, these safety systems are no longer functional.

America contributes to it big time, we literally ship trash over to them. Yes, together they’re on the hook for 27 percent of the world’s garbage. But those two countries also have a combined population of 2.7 billion, to our relatively paltry 327 million. The math is mortifying: With more than eight times as many people as we have, China and India manage to produce just a little more than twice the amount of garbage that we do. According to the report, American citizens generate more than three times the amount of waste that their Chinese counterparts do.

Each American produces more than 1,700 pounds of it a year, the report’s authors found, adding up to 239 million tons annually. Do China and India generate more trash? Yes, together they’re on the hook for 27 percent of the world’s garbage. But those two countries also have a combined population of 2.7 billion, to our relatively paltry 327 million. The math is mortifying: With more than eight times as many people as we have, China and India manage to produce just a little more than twice the amount of garbage that we do. According to the report, American citizens generate more than three times the amount of waste that their Chinese counterparts do.

I find it interesting that you seemed more concerned about a dog than human life.
@petrescuework-difficultcas65812 жыл бұрын
@@TheS0Lo1 Well yes I am. I mean, everybody is free to side with whoever they feel needs it. I personally generally side with animals, who don't have a right to speak up for themselves. After all, the people in Delhi produce their trash themselves. They chose to throw needles into the trash. They chose to throw plastic into bodies of water. Now I know that one person, living in poverty can't change anything about that. I'm not talking about individuals, but the general population. It has to be done by government. But the government seems to not care if the environment gets destroyed and people get ill or die of that. The animals just have to live with whatever circumstances they're given. They have no other choice. They can't bring up laws to change anything. And they never created any of this mess. It's always humans who destroy the planet. So eventually humans have to live in their destroyed planet. We all, you and I, produce plastic waste every day. So we are a part of this general problem.

Tbh, I quit reading your post. All I can say is, you go and virtue signal, and cast blame on individuals you know nothing about. Sounds about right these days. Recyling in poor countries is a strange thing - in some places, I was told to PLEASE throw beer cans on the floor in festivals, so that poor people may collect them and earn a bit of money selling it to recycling plant. If you throw them into the trash cans, that money would go to some company directly. Therw must be an interesting way to 'use' these poor people for recycling, and everybody would win. Like a long conveyor belt where they could pick recycable stuff more safely.
@jacobbwalters81332 жыл бұрын
It does exist- even in rich countries. Many states in the US have can and bottle deposits on carbonated and alcoholic beverages. The states that have these deposits have very little- if any- of those sort of bottles lying around. Everyone from the homeless to the wealthy turn in their cans for recycling and they never make it to landfills. Often, as fundraisers, people will collect cans and bottles to return. The key is getting everyone to care about the bottles. If you can incentivize everyone to collect the stuff before it gets to landfills, things work much better.

Or maybe, money is the problem 🤑
@jacobbwalters81332 жыл бұрын
@@grantmccoy6739 I think that the problem is that policymakers view taxes and economic policy as a whole as cold financial tools rather than as a means of encouraging moral and productive behaviors. Money is a means to a societal end, no more no less. Economics is a social science and we have to recognize that individual perceptions and interconnection are really what drive us as human beings. I am in the minority of political thinkers in that I am a strong supporter of sin taxes as a way to encourage healthy and productive behaviors. In a way, bottle deposits are the ultimate sin tax as they tax only those who are unwilling to return their trash to the correct locations.
@grantmccoy67392 жыл бұрын
@@jacobbwalters8133 when I look at this video, and read the comment, I see that poverty is encouraging littering and trash scavenging. I see that as a problem caused by money itself. Besides, even if there was a sin tax that forced people to recycle, these poor people would still exist, and they wouldn't have a source of income. If money didn't exist, people wouldn't have to rummage through garbage to feed themselves. You could think of these people as eating garbage. They're certainly being treated that way.
