Perfect Dark is the spiritual successor to Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64. Though it didn’t sell as well as Goldeneye, Perfect Dark improves on almost every aspect of Goldeneye and was so technically demanding, that it requires the N64 memory expansion pak to play most of the game. This is the story behind the making of Perfect Dark.
A lot of the gameplay footage in this episode is from Granslu00’s channel. I highly recommend subscribing to him. He frequently uploads some incredible Perfect Dark and GoldenEye play throughs including custom levels, hacks, etc.

I actually haven't had cereal in years because they're all loaded with ridiculous amounts of carbs and sugar. Hard to believe we are supposed to start our day consuming that stuff. I was surprised by how relatable this partnership was so I jumped in and picked up a custom 4 pack with your referral. Looking forward to being able to snack on some dope cereal. Hope it helps out the channel in some small way!

Thanks Kevin, it does help! I felt exactly the same way. I get offers to do sponsored segments almost every day and I've never taken anybody up on it because most of the stuff that I get offers for isn't something I would personally use or believe in. But I was actually already curious about magic spoon and obviously I try to keep a pretty healthy diet so it seemed like a good fit. I figured it would taste , you know, okay at best and was genuinely surprised by how good it ended up being. They sent me a sample pack to try it out for free but I ended up just buying some after I went through it. My code wasn't even active yet so I actually paid full price for it 😂

I see a lot of people bashing this sponsor but most of them don't know anything about keto and therefore don't know why someone would pay a premium price for food like this. Thanks for the code. I'll probably give this one a chance. As somebody who has lost a load of weight on keto I can say that while I've really enjoyed the results, there are some things I miss that I'd like to enjoy again sensibly. A niche product that allows me that in moderation sounds good to me, even for a premium price.

Perfect Dark was such a freakin awesome sweet ass game. Still remember lugging my huge 23 inch tv outside with my N64 to the communal gazebo on my street and playing with all my friends. The 4 player split screen WITH bots meant we could play a coop deathmatch against the AI. I remember we used to set 1 of the bots to really hard so everytime someone saw the yellow bot they'd run scared.

My favorite game of all time. It truly was a masterpiece. It was packed with so much content! And the multiplayer was even better than Goldeneye's with SO much customizability. I agree, the 2010 XBLA remaster is the ideal way to play it in the modern age. I once started a petition to develop Perfect Dark for PC but it never got anywhere lol would love to see a modern studio like Nightdive port it to the PC!

I was genuinely blown away by this game back in 2000. It looked so good for the time and had so much content that I played it for literally years, and I still do once in a while. And I totally agree with your closing thoughts on why it couldn't surpass Goldeneye sales-wise. Goldeneye was just a pioneer title for consoles, and even though Perfect Dark did everything better than Goldeneye IMO it just couldn't make history like its predecessor did.

Multiple reasons, 007 was already a household name. Lots of kids parents at that time were already familiar with 007, so if the kid didn't want it, his dad or older brother probably did, and as a result, almost every person you knew with an N64 had Goldeneye, or had played it heavily at friends and family's homes. And let's face it, most boys growing up want to be James Bond, not Joanna Dark, and to this day I still prefer playing as a male character. It takes me out of the game to see female hands in a first person game, however in Perfect Dark it's not an issue since they don't look particularly girly, that said, this was pre-internet era, so kids are going to be looking at the box art and judging off of that. Finally, the movie itself served as advertisement for GE, but Perfect Dark didn't get advertised on TV that I recall and if you stack Turok 2, Goldeneye 64, and Perfect Dark side by side on a shelf at a rental store and gave them a choice, most boys will choose the game with a male character.
@paulgraves1392
@paulgraves1392 Жыл бұрын
I think the reason that Perfect Dark didn't do so well compared to Goldeneye, is that Goldeneye had a number of years to build its reputation as a must have title, and its popularity eventually had a viral effect where if you had a N64 but didn't have Goldeneye, you'd still know someone who did. Perfect Dark came out in 2000 so it really only had one Christmas to be a must have title for- a Christmas season where the PS2 would launch. As a result, Perfect Dark didn't have the time to gather the kind of momentum that Goldeneye had steadily built up over the N64s life.

Ok, you had me cackling like a madman at you hanging out in the dam guard tower. Perfect Dark was the first game I 100% as a kid and is most likely responsible for me being as much as a gamer as I am, tons of memories. I good chunk of those memories were begging my parents for the x-pack to play all of it, the game was quite the expensive buy during that time. Years later my buddies an I would still pull the old girl out, load up a lobby of meat sims and just go all in with fists only. Thanks for this man, always good to have a nostalgia trip.

Seeing a new documentary video from you is always such a rare treat (pun only intended if it's amusing)! I relate to the freedom given to the dev team being a double edged sword. I'm an illustrator for a living and can tell you first-hand that even though clients often _think_ they're being nice by telling me I can do whatever I want in certain aspects of a job, they really aren't. I've always VASTLY preferred being told exactly what a client wants, all the way down to providing reference if they have it. It makes the job easier for me, which makes it faster, which makes it less expensive for the client to get _exactly_ what they want. It's a win-win situation all around. Freedom can be nice sometimes, yes, but creative brains can go in a million different directions without guidelines to fence them in a little bit. My clients have often been surprised when I tell them that no, you're not being annoying or overly controlling by sending me a novela sized description of what you want with reference photos attached for, say, clothing, facial features you like, certain objects that are important, etc (I've done a lot of work for writers who want visuals of their characters or specific scenes). So yeah, as soon as you described all the freedom the Perfect Dark team had? I winced a little bit before you even said it could be a double edged sword.😄

Thanks so much. I mostly use Cinema 4D with redshift as my renderer. I do sometimes use Blender for random stuff here and there but I only used Cinema 4D in this video with the exception of the animation of James Bond running across the screen during the intro. For whatever reason I just couldn't quite get the animation to work the way I wanted it to in cinema 4D but was able to do it in Blender. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and the kind words. I really appreciate it.

Yahel, my man, the amount of effort, production value and research you put into these videos is 2nd to none. PD is absolutely one of my favorite games of all time, and I agree that the 2010 remaster is the best way to relive it. It's a crime against humanity that you don't have more subs. Thank you for all your effort. Plus, you just seem like a cool dude.

Finally catching up on some KZbin stuff I missed the past few months. I never played much Goldeneye back when I was younger but I played a ton of Perfect Dark multiplayer. It’s pretty crazy that the core dev group left during development and even crazier that it’s name was created by a simple word combining program. Really great info, really great editing! Thoroughly enjoyed this man!

Yo, I grew up playing this game, it’ll always remain one of my favorite games of all time. And while I do like Golden Eye as well, Perfect Dark has always been better and more enjoyable IMO. There’s so much more to do in PD, especially when I don’t rlly have anyone to play it with nowadays if I wanna do a game of multiplayer. I can just boot up some sims and have a death match!

Perfect Dark is my favorite N64 game. I played it a lot back then and I've also played it a lot as an adult. Always on the original N64. I haven't played it in years now sadly since I have my old consoles in my storage unit. Maybe when I have more free time I'll consider getting my old consoles out from my storage unit to play them. This is the first time I've seen your channel and it's awesome! You guys didn't have to do the extra work with those visual effects but you went ahead and did so and they look amazing!

Blown away with your green screen editing bits here, man! Great work on recapping the making of one of my favorite games of all time, and THE best FPS (IMO) that STILL has more features and modes than most modern FPS!
@WrestlingWithGaming

Thanks Dongles! I had planned on doing a lot more full body green screen stuff in the levels and filmed a bunch of footage for it but unfortunately the 3D models from PD were very difficult to work with in modern 3D editing programs. Even the few levels I used here I had to basically remodel a third of the level. The The GoldenEye level models were far easier to use when I made that video. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment, I really do appreciate it.

Apparantly, the Bond license holders are also incredibly restrictive with what a developer can and can't do with the property now, even silly things like they're not allowed to have Jaws in the game anymore. One of the reasons no one's wanted to touch the IP for years. So, the new IO game in development will be interesting to see.

I wasn't sure to watch this video as I've never played the game before, but this was another excellent video! I love hearing about the history of games and I'm fascinated by the earlier years of the videogame industry. I grew up during the sixth generation era, and while I do try to check out the classics from previous eras, I've never gotten to play any of Rare's iconic N64 titles but the more I learn about their fascinating history, the more I want to check them out! This just makes me even more bummed that that Rare Replay collection was never released for PC!

Thanks for watching, especially since you never even played it. That's awesome to hear that you still liked it. I can't think of a nicer thing someone could say. It might be jarring to play it on N64 for the first time in 2021 because of the controls of the time. The remaster is what I'd recommend or the 1964 emulator which will play it at 60 FPS with enhanced textures as well as keyboard and mouse support and other modern control options. Anyway, thanks again for watching and commenting.
