Thank you very much for making this documentary, I have started to watch it and it looks very good. I am a Sochaux fan and am absolutely devastated. There is however a bit hope as Peugeot's great grandson and Jean Claude Plessis who was our chairman during our glorious years of winning the cups in 2004 and 2007 have joined forces to find investors and buy the club from Nenking (it hurts to even write that company name...) so still a wee change we can stay in Ligue 2. Fingers crossed....Just finished watching your video and really well done, you've done a lot of research :) Just one thing, Peugeot sold Sochaux to Ledus the month after we got relegated in 2014, so that was a double blow for us! Again thank you for taking the time to do this documentary, we need all the spotlight we can get !

This was a great video. About 10 years ago I found out that my great-great parents were born in tiny villages not that far apart in Eastern France. When I looked at a map of Ligue 1 and 2 clubs at the time, Sochaux was by far the closest club so I adapted them as my French club. This video was great as it's been hard finding English language coverage of the club here in Canada.

As a Sochaux fan how would you feel about merge with another club? Dijon or Besançon for example. Many small clubs across France suffer from same fate I’m afraid. The appointment of Samuel Laurent in my opinion was worse than the ownerships not having money, because Laurent drove away many fans I know and many even went and formed own smaller clubs. The Omar Daf incident was the first sign of collapse for me and Laurent was the one who lit the fire.

Great video! Just a minor point: While FCSM is based in Sochaux, it is the ONLY big club in the area. So its fanbase is not just Sochaux / Montbeliard based. People from surrounding cities, including Belfort and all its metro area, Lisle-sur-le-doubs, and even as far south as Besancon will support FCSM. Also worth noting, while Sochaux and Montbeliard are small cities, the whole urban area of Belfort - Montbeliard has over 300,000 inhabitants. This easily explains the 12,000 fans attendance.

The question is why hasn't the French league been on par with the other major leagues throughout its history considering the large population and economy of France so it should be able to support a top quality football league that shouldn't have needed to sell all its stars I mean football is hardly an obscure sport in France is it so why has Ligue 1 in general trailed behind the EPL, LA Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga for most of its history

It is culture issue partly, football doesn’t dominate as a sport like it does in Spain, England and Germany
@alanfox691 Жыл бұрын
France is not dominated buy football some city's Rugby Union is the dominant game others it is football. France has buy far the best Rugby Union Tournament in the world The Top 14 it gets good size crowds & has lots of money to throw about. Football in France in general as a rule is more popular in the North whare Rugby Union is more dominant in the south of France there is cases whare this is not the case like Olympique Marseille in the south in football & Racing 92 ( Paris ) in football but that is the exception rather than the rule. Some people follow both sports in France for example if you follow Saint-Étienne there is a high possibility you are also a Clermont Auvergne fan in Rugby Union. Rugby Union is more Media savvy in France Football simply is not. Rugby Union has an Amazing deal with Cannal + for every single game but Football in France has made poor Media choices & had to go cap in hand to Amazon after the domestic T.V deal they had completely collapsed a few years ago. France will always be split 50/50 between both sports in my view. Take Toulouse that is most definitely a Rugby Union strong hold I had family that lived there for 6 years not many people bother with football there it's predominantly a Rugby Union city & Toulouse is a massive City in France. Keep Safe.

Alfie is really something else, this guy could be a legit French football analyst considering his tremendous knowledge about French football, demonstrated since a long time in his videos. His knowledge is actually frightening, there is not a lot of people in France who could trace back the history of this very significant club like he did. Before watching the video, I wondered if he would talk about that dumb representative quote about getting upscale and prefering tennis and all, and Alfie delivered, with his pleasant ironic tone. And this quality material comes from a fan of Hull City. I'm speechless. As I already was when he did an analysis of PSG and pointed out Ile de France is probably nowadays the area that produces the most world-class footballers.

New professional divisions and clubs are being made, including a potential NZ team, there’s also the Oceania Professional League that is supposedly going to be a thing within the next 2 years. Sochaux, Bastia, Gazélec Ajaccio in France, Bury, Aldershot, Hereford in England and god knows how many more around Europe and the world....slowly but surely, when another team goes bust, a set of people are disenfranchised from the sport altogether. Even speaking to someone who grew up supporting Wimbledon talking to him about the phoenix club his response "yeah but it's not the same." That's the thing that gets forgotten about (if even thought of at all). Really horrifies me how badly things have gone with football. It very gently has sped up its own demise.

Post #8: Alfie you should really consider doing a video on the Bosnian men's national team, from being ranked 13 in the world in 2014 and qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil, to not qualifying for a single tournament since, yet managing to win their uefa nation leagues group, but genuinely hitting our lowest point with a 2-0 defeat to Luxembourg. Aging players, players who represent other national teams that are eligible to play for Bosnia but aren't seeming interested, just the genuine geopolitical mess that Bosnia is with how the Dayton agreement was meant to simply end the Bosnian war yet became the country's de facto constitution. I think it would make for a very interesting video, and could even span additional videos like how Velez Mostar are forced to play away from their original stadium in Mostar as it is on the Croatian side of the river, with their old stadium being taken over by Zrinjski Mostar. A club that was actually banned in Yugoslavia because of their nationalistic origin

It's sad to consider a professional team going out of existence. Here in the US we take our top teams for granted. There are some colleges which have won national titles but chose to focus on academics, but professional teams seem to stay afloat. We have the same problem here with huge amounts of money going to the very top, but it would be unimaginable to me to see even a bad pro team go out of business. It hasn't happened in forever. So when I see a Bury or Chester City or whoever disappear, or someone in another league, it's a reminder of how fragile things can be when you don't have tons of money. Or even if you do and spend it terribly.

Come to think of it, we have had a lot of lesser leagues fold (lower level football, the WNBA's counterpart, and almost the CBA, thanks to Isaiah Thomas) but it just seems someone too rich for their own good will step in to save a team in a big sports metro area. The idea of Peugeot of all brands trying to go upmarket is a joke. Their cars are passable mid tier at best. They aren't and won't even be a luxury brand. Shame on them for discarding such an interesting part of their history like this 😕

I believe that Stellantis has pretty much given up on that "project" since merging with Fiat Chrysler (the focus is more on Jeep & Maserati being their luxury brands now). However it's kind of funny that Tavares now heads a company that sponsors Juventus...with a pretty generous sponsorship deal to boot. Honestly though, their views on Football (from the sponsorship perspective) seem pretty daft considering the popularity of the game across the board.

I think the funniest part of this is that Peugeot consider themselves 'up market'

"Fun fact" PSA group had a revenue of $7 billion and a profit of $1.5 billion. I guess giving $10 million a year out of $1500 million to Sochaux is too much. $10 million is not even an yacht for the hard working stakeholders.

Just think, if Tate and Lyle sponsored the French Cup, It'd be Coupe de Tate. We all continue to have crossed fingers for a new sponsor for Le Coupe, a revolution, a coup.....Bastia are well known in France, the phrase of endearment..."You Bastia" is always a pleasure to hear. Seriously, what a shame for the fanbase of Sochaux to watch their pride and joy being dismantled so horribly. They should blame Peugeot PSA for that.
