Piano has been a godsend during the pandemic, I worked on many pieces, but then settled into Bach. I learned all of the Anna Magdelana Notebook, then all of the 2 part inventions. Currently I’m working on the 3 part inventions. I usually practice multiple times throughout the day, but shorter, and quit when I lose focus.

Karen I sight read the whole AMN earlier this year (good exercise one a day!) and learned Bist du bei Mir which I find very moving, though quite tricky, took me ages to work a suitable fingering. Which is your favourite piece in that book? Happy playing!
@karenfischer79163 жыл бұрын
@@taniacummings9207 My favorites from the aMN are 5 Polonaise, 17 Menuet, and 20 Menuet. Not sure if all the additions list them in the same order or not. I’m usually picking and choosing what I work on, but with these and the 2 and three part inventions I just went straight through the book, regardless of whether or not I thought I liked them to start with. Some pieces grew on me. Bach has been a great companion during the pandemic.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments during these unusual world times. I was surprised to hear you are in Australia as I am in New Zealand. My brain-finger have long forgotten how to work together. So I started from playing Clementi's sonatas slowly, to now able Beethoven's Sonatina's and Sonata. Now I'm working on Debussy's Clair De Lune (which I've been staring at the notes for my past 30 years and did not dare to try), Reverie and Suite Bergamaque's Prelude. After 16 years away from the piano, I have time during the lockdown to return to music. The 16 years have not eliminated the CTS that made me stop playing piano & flute, but I am at least able to practice piano again (I'm still afraid to touch a flute because of the pain in the wrists when gripping it), taking breaks in between pieces -- Brahms op. 79 no. 1 & 2, Schubert op. 90 no. 2, Mendelssohn op. 14, Beethoven op. 13 & 57, and 5 Mozart sonatas. After 16 years without practice, the decline in motor skill was frightful, but it gradually returns. It was insomnia in 2004 that kept me up bwtween 3 - 5 AM, with nothing to do but learn a long and difficult piece, so I learned Beethoven's Appassionata that year -- thanks to insomnia. I'm not ready to return to it yet, except occasionally the 3rd movement, which is good exercise to get both hands playing together.

Bach Prelude in C Major BWV 846. I have learned this in the last couple of months as well. The only time I use any kind of device during practice is to listen to YT tutorial or rendition of a piece I am learning. My focus and energy have not been good so I have been kind to myself and worked on easier key pieces. Currently I am working on Clementi Sonatina in C Major 1st movement. It's in a couple of my books but not the 2nd/3rd movements so I have ordered a book of Clementi sonatinas so I can learn it in full. I like Clementi. I bought a new piano in March, a beautiful rosewood Irmler acoustic and my playing is so much more fulfilling. The hardest part has been getting my head around the fact that it wasn't going to sound the exact same no matter how well I played it, so to try to understand what the independent composition was trying to achieve. Good luck to you and your family through the pandemic, and thanks again for everything.

To answer your questions.... Not sure about the grade 1 piece (what was it, out of curiosity? Morning practice is really the only option,(ironically I have to use an old digital piano with headphones for this, rather than my acoustic!) because if I don't do it, it doesn't get done, after running around after teenage sons & household, and piano students. Last year I learnt Beethoven's third movement of Moonlight Sonata- mostly for a technical workout. I knew I would never be able to play it at performance level but it gave me a HUGE sense of achievement. Easier pieces over past 12 months have included Debussy's Reverie and Schubert's Serenade. After hearing your suggestion to challenge yourself, can't decide.!..🤣.🙄😣 I've only recently discovered you, and I LOVE your videos. Have been referring all my students to you!

Now, remarried and part of a hearing family - I find it much more difficult to practice because everyone will wake up if I start tickling the ivories. And I hate practicing when people are around. Little to say, I do not play very much now. But with the 5-piece lockdown challenge I will take it up. Here is what I am working on: Liszt's transcription for piano (S.464/7) of Beethoven's symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92. 2nd movement (Allegretto). The only one i'm fully satisfied with is Solace - Scott Joplin (first). Started in August, practice for about an hour a day. May do another classical piece after the rag, or i may opt for Alexis Ffrench, just got his book of sheet music, or maybe one of the pieces that you suggest for beginners that i've never played (Chopin or Satie). thanks for such great content on your channel.

I am learning "Comptine d'un autre été L'après-midi" - Yann Tiersen. I have started practising piano in general in April, so I am pushing myself quite high with this, but I have almost cracked it entirely (Started two months ago). Few polishing here and there then I need to speed it up.

I started playing again during COVID as well. I started by renting a not so expensive piano for the first year and just fooled around with some pieces I enjoyed. Then after I had done that for a year I bought myself a nice Yamaha upright grand which sounds beautiful. Only recently I’ve started to think about really getting serious and having a daily non negotiable piano practice time. I’m undecided about getting a teacher though because I want to play pieces I enjoy, not pieces they might want me to play.

I started piano in April 2021 and have found that practicing has been a wonderful part of my day. It's definitely helped me a lot. My teacher is having me learn Prelude in C Major (which you were playing) and I'm loving that. On my own I like to practice Christmas songs in easy arrangements and I use Piano Marvel to help me with some of the basics and skill building. It's similar to Skoove. I think learning something new is a great way to deal with anxiety and since I love listening to beautiful piano music learning to play some has been a wonderful thing.

Liszt - Consolation no. 3 in D flat I don't really like to play too many famous pieces but this one I had to learn. Something about it. Stay safe.
@gisellerogers67743 жыл бұрын
It's a beautiful piece, and once you get your head around the flats and leger lines, it's a piece I still go back to sometimes after decades of learning it, to literally "console" myself (with only a few mistakes🤣)💕 Grieg's "Notturno" in C major was another piece I learnt around this time- also really lovely and reflective. Good luck!

Moonlight Sonata. Thanks so much Jazer. I’m off to get Forest ap now. The piano saved me as well as Prem Rawats Lockdown series on KZbin and his best selling book Hear Yourself. I’m so glad I’ve found you Jazer. You have helped so much in improving my piano skills.

The piece I am working on now is called "Sweet Bye and Bye", a perfect piece for pandemic. I think we all need such a positive dose everyday. Since January this year, I have started to focus on piano. At first I felt pressured to practise nearly everyday to try to make improvement. Despite I push myself to practise piano on a daily basis, I make it flexible in practice time. Sometimes I work on a piece for 5 minutes only. When my mood and energy level is high, I practise for 2 -3 hours. But my principle is to practise piano "nearly"every day. After going this process for half a year, it becomes a habit of mine. Your mind and body naturally want to hear some music. I hope this would help anyone who wants to make piano practice a natural daily task.

You played the start of Bach's Prelude in C Major. I've been working on it, played it three times today, and feel I've got it. I spent most of the time on Mozart's Sonata Facile No. 16 though and believe it will take me another month before I can play it reasonably well.

I started Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata as a lockdown challenge thinking I’d be lucky to play the first 4 pages. Still needs some polishing but can play through the whole thing. My latest challenge is Beethoven’s Sonata 32. Just started the second movement. On page 1 of 12. It is something else!

I learnt the keyboard 30yrs ago but have always loved piano. I bought a digital piano at the beginning of the year to focus my mind on doing something away from the screen. I focused on playing the 'Moonlight' sonata all the way through (though I make a mistake somewhere every time I play it). Are you going to do videos with tips on how to play particular pieces?

My best practice times are before breakfast after I've done my chores (I have livestock) and at night before I head for bed. I practice about a half hour each session. If I can, I do another half-hour in the afternoon. On very rare occasions, I've squeezed in a fourth half-hour. Basically, I practice whenever I can find the time, but I make sure to do the morning and night sessions no mater what.

I used to play in an orchestra and would have to learn about 7-8 pieces in 12 weeks. A thing I was very surprised to find was that I learned much faster if I had to tell the kids off before starting practice. There has to be a reason for that.

I'm working on sooo many things I don't even know. Recently I have memorized the Nocturne op. 55 no. 1, by Chopin, and I'm trying to work on some expecific moments to get the whole piece more fluid. I need to get back on the Prelude op. 28, no. 18, also by Chopin. I had all the parts memorized but I didn't studied that much and I forgot some passages. What I'm really excited to work on is my compositions. Since the beggining of the lockdown to know I wrote three preludes, have four more in the works, and currently I'm working on a larger piece that I guess I'll finish before the preludes to be my Op. 1 finally. Aaaaand there's a piece by my favorite composer that I'm trying to push myself but it's way above my level. It's a piece called 'In the Hothouse', by Sorabji. And there's actually a lot more I have started but gave up to work on what excites me the most. It's not really working out that great, but I made some progresses. I should work more on technique. :p anyways

Congratulations on achieving your Diploma, Jazer! Well done! These lockdowns here in Melbourne are definitely a challenge. Another good video as always. One difficulty with your 5-song challenge is that there is no definitive time for this pandemic to be over! In March this year I decided to set a goal of playing Moonlight Sonata by the end of this year. Having never played piano at all, I found an online course and have been working my way through it slowly. I find that I mostly only get to practice for 30 to 50 minutes from around 9:30pm, 3 or 4 nights a week. It is not ideal, but it does provide me with an outlet for something other than screen time prior to going to bed. And it's just enough to see a little progress each time I play. I feel that I would be further ahead in my progress towards my goal if I was practising more consistently and at an earlier time of day. But I remain motivated enough to keep pushing forward. :) Keep up the great work with your channel here. The insights that you share are inspirational. Thank you. Stay safe.

After not practicing at all for months because I live with someone who is on a very different time schedule than mine, I decided to resuscitate Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words op. 19 no. 1 and Brahms' Intermezzo op.118 no.2. They are slowly coming back to me after years of neglect.

I bought a second hand piano without any inspection during confinement (May 2020) just by looking at the pictures and the price. And voilà. I've been playing non-stop since then. Being away from home (or my piano) feels like a burden. I'm looking forward to practice each day right after work. Before learning piano, I was just existing, now I'm living

I'm working on "River Flows in You" by Yiruma and "Comptine Dun Autre ete" by Yann Tiersen. I also just learned how to use the sustain pedal today and I can do it quite well already and I'm so surprised at how much of a difference it makes! I have memorized "River Flows in You" and can play it well, but not perfectly yet. The second song I mentioned I will learn after I get comfortable with this one.
