When I bought a Tsunami Equipped 4-6-0 from bachmann 8 years ago, it had johnson bar sound effect which I liked but it seemed old fashioned compared to other 4-6-0's with sound.

George, The Johnson Bar or PR doesn't select which side of the piston gets steam for power. The cylinder is a dual acting cylinder creating power in the fwd AND reverse directions. The reverse method only changes the timing to the piston which reverses the engine. I believe most PR's were air operated and not steam operated hence the addition mandated for an aux air reservoir by the ICC in an emergency should the engine lose it's air. Love the Binford Tools building!

Did you get George's reply to your comment?

George's comment doesn't seem to be showing up so here it is incase you missed it: I may have misspoke or wasn't as clear as I'd like. When stopped, the reverser/Johnson bar determined which side of the pistons to start movement in either direction. the timing from the linkages, once moving, then sent steam to the appropriate place to maintain speed/tractive effort. I'd love to do this showing the movement of a real loco to show it, but this is not possible right now due to COVID. We've been lucky to have the D&S nearby to do this type of research and videos. But it is tough to get any video right now. Anyway, thanks for watching. Appreciate your comments and helping this be clearer than I made it!
