I hate attunement slots. Especially when they're given to items that are rarely useful, but nice to have (like a necklace of adaptation), so you never have it attuned unless you can get a couple short rests in (before and after use) JUST to pad out a dungeon.

Me and my friends play around with way too many homebrew. I gave one of my player a "bottomless mug" it was literally a mug with the bottom cut out. However, later in the campaign they found the bottom to the bottomless mug. Now any liquid poured into it could be drank infinitely. My players being smart put a superior healing potion and had an on cool down unlimited supply of healing.

New spell: Ashardlon's Stride Magic Item: Boots of Speed. Basically you get to run at 200 feet per turn and scorch everything in your path with auto attacking fire damage. Paired with 2 levels in Rogue and it becomes like 300 feet per turn. Edit: It is great if you need to hit a horde of minions with Splash Damage. Edit 2: And God forbid you get someone else (like a wizard or sorceror or Magical Secrets Bard,) to cast Haste on you. Then you might actually go the speed of a plane. Based on my math, assuming highest level casting for Ashardlon's Stride Base Speed: 30 ft. +9th level Ashardlon's Stride: 50 ft. Total before multipliers: 80 ft Haste: X2 Boots of Speed: X2 Total before dashes: 320 ft. Action Dash: +320 ft. Level 2 Rogue Bonus Action: +320 ft. Haste Action: +320 ft. Total movement speed: 1280 feet in one turn, or a speed of about 145 miles per hour for exactly one minute, as you move, causing 7d6 fire damage to everything you move within at least 5 feet of.

I once said, that an alchemist had "Unicorn Lube" on sale, as a joke. My party did buy it, despite it being very expensive. It forced me to write an item description about magical lube. I LOVE hiding a major artifact in amongst the players. That knife your father told you to never lose and always seemed to bring you luck, well guess what!? It had a single drop of a God of Lucks blood inside it and is now a super major plot point that will tie all the mysteries together perfectly! *10 seconds later* Ah ha, so did you really think melting the knife down and trying to drink it's molten iron would make you a demigod? The Eversoaking Sponge is an item my dad created bc his friend was harrassing him about wanting a magic item. It's ridiculously powerful. They soaked up an ocean with it. They one-shot and capture water elementals with it. If you wring it out, it unleashes everything that's been contained in it thus far. It can literally end the world. It still shows up occasionally in D&D campaigns, because it's funny, just like the Staff of Jovonnous. (Think unlimited deck of many things, but even more ridiculous, and even more possibilities.)

Staff of Jovonnous, or, a souped up staff of wonders. I once gave one to my players, and they used it to the last charge. With it, they summoned an elephant while fighting an rok bird and travelling on a flying carpet at over 1000 feet, then petrified said rok. There was some serious damage down there... Much later, they found a statuette set on top of a narrow 4 feet tall base. It nullified all divination in the room and the adjoining ones. It had to be carried in a pair of nested boxes. When used outside, it nullified ALL divination EVERYWHERE, and not only in the current world. When out of the two boxes, it also affected the astral plane, the ethereal plane, the first level of ALL outer planes and all the inner planes. Turn out it was an artifact and caused anyone within it's area of effect to progressively become more and more paranoid. It even affected the capacity of gods to see things. Eventually, a bunch of gods gave them a mission to nullify it and get rid of it in a way that EVEN gods could not find it. They succeeded superbly at the task and where all secretly rewarded with the ability to cast a wish twice per day. They DID NOT figure out that reward, but accidentally used it a few times.

I recall reading about a homebrew sword that would produce a random effect when you hit with it. The players love it, until they roll a 100 on the chance. A full army of skeletons crawls up out of the ground, performing full accompanyment as one specific skeleton proceeds to sing the entirety of Dem Bones, while everyone--player and enemy alike--is effectively frozen in shock and awe at the sheer spectacle. When the song is over, the skeletons crawl back into the ground, and the players vow never use the sword again.

My DM once had a homebrew item in his early DMing career called "The Stick Of Sticks." It was a single stick that, when a key word is used, summons 9 identical sticks around it. Jokes aside, potions are fabulous items to give out. This is especially true if you're a new DM because no matter what they do they can only do it once. So, you don't have a permanent game-breaking item in the players' hands. Also, if the party has no healer be generous with the healing potions unless you want the pace of the game to slow WAY down.

Potions and scrolls can be fantastic items early game. Just got to make sure the party uses them rather than saving them up and never actually using them. Oh I give out potions but the first potion is in a bottomless bottle (party only geta one) with a few uses before needing to recharge (can be upgraded at later points in time) and any new liquid put into it replaces the previous and all subsequent potions and poisons after that are in normal bottles so is they want more of something they have to replace the liquid and if they run out of a liquid they previously replace without putting it back in (especially if it's hard to come by) they don't get another one unless they work for it

On the topic of magic items, I remember when I once read about this very cool application of Immovable Rod somewhere. So, you weld it to an iron or steel shield, either in a way that it resembles an umbrella, or as the immovable rod as the handle. Then you bash with the shield, downing an opponent, or push them to a wall, then click the button on the rod and have the wizard cast Heat Metal on the contraption. Highly recommend stealing the R&D department from Paranoia and turning it into a magic R&D for your fantasy campaign: Wizards recruit party to test new magical gear every couple of sessions. Party gets a list of impressive sounding magical items of vauge abilities. Get to each pick 1 to test for the next couple sessions. 98% of them have something... Off about them. From flat out not being magical(wand of cutting is a dagger). To being misleading(wand of cutting let's you swap places with nearby non-moving people. Has a 30 second casting time. Great for line skipping.). To being absurdly good with a devestating flaw(wand of cutting is practically a lightsaber for 18 seconds of activation 3 times a day but has no markings as to which end is dangerous and a 20% chance of suddenly revesering which end is the cutting bit evey activation). We had a wand of paranoia that caused a mental debuff on enemies will saves and caused strife if stealthily cast but the dm later told us that all those nightly interruptions/aborted ambushes/ random saves we had to roll was a passive effect of the wand and not real.

Magic butt plug tail. Must be seen and out in open to have effects, it gives immunity to the frightened condition as you have no shame, also everyone who can see and understand that it is a butt plug must succeed on a DC 15 + the Creature's Charisma mod Wisdom Saving throw, if failed, the creature that failed the check is stunned until they succeed on the check, which they may roll at the start of each of their turns. If succeeded the creature succeeded has immunity to the passive stunning aspect of item, Succubi and Incubi are already immune to it due to being succubi and incubi. Gives advantage on seduction rolls if DM allows. Also, it allows the user a 30 ft swimming and flying speed or additional 20 ft swim/fly speed if the creature wearing this already has that ability. It does this by rotating extremely fast. Everyone that witnesses it must make a DC 34 Wisdom save and take 9d6 psychic damage which treats immunity as resistance and ignores resistance from the sheer absurdity on a failed save and half as much on a successful one. This save must be rolled every time it is used, it affects both allies and enemies alike.

An old, third party item I loved (and still love) to give to my players is the "Rod of many uses" - basically a cheap version of the Rod of Lordly Might. The thing can literally change into a ton of useful items, from a ram to a crowbar to a shortsword and more, just by fiddling with the knob at one end. No weapon obtained with the Rod is magical, no item is enchanted - they simply extend or retract as needed. Some are more useful than others (seriously, what would you do with ONE climbing piton?), but in the end it works just fine. My players love it, because it is extra versatile, but mostly because it is so cheap that they can get it at level ONE.

Shoutout to my original homebrewed magical item, the very first one I've ever made: The Crusty Wand. A wand that has 3 charges which replenish daily. When activated, the wand caused one out of a list of assorted baked goods to appear, all the way from a 3 tiered chocolate cake, to a bread monster that would attempt to kill the party. This item has been the catalyst of many of the funniest moments in my still running 2 year campaign. Because: One day I decided that the wand doesn't actually *make* bread. It *takes* bread from somewhere in the multiverse. This has caused stolen birthday cakes, half-eaten loaves from more than likely starving orphans, and, the piece-de-resistance; a cake stolen from the Dark Elven King's 500th birthday. Twice. The player who owns the crusty wand then went and bought a chest of preserving to enshrine the cake forever, at the crowning jewel of the items stolen by the master minotaur thief: the gour-MET. My players haven't laughed that hard in any of our sessions since. Close, but not quite. And have dubbed that session as the funniest ever. The players even named their adventuring guild after the crusty wand: The Crustidigitateonous Crusading Commanders .Co .Company. Yes. It is as hard to say as it is to read and yes, I have to say it right every time I say it.

My favorite use is to make it into a barricade in a 5f wide entryway, since there are plenty of creatures not intelligent enough to find other ways around. Even for the ones that are intelligent, to disarm it they must use their action to click a button on the rod and cease it's effects, or to circumvent it they'll have to squeeze between it and the entryway, usually costing double movement for them. And if they are both intelligent enough and there are other ways to move to us, it should still cost more movement than the direct path being blocked by the rod.

I had a string of delightfully odd magic items when I DMmed, all granted by "Sheggoraz, God of Chaos" (A very obvious Sheogorath expy). If players rolled a Nat1 on a navigation check, they would end up in a mysterious forest (regardless the biome they were in before), unable to explain how or when exactly they had gotten there. They would find Sheggoraz sitting at a long tea table, willing to pour them tea and play a game with them. Magic item 1: A teapot that could dispense liquids at random on a 1d100 roll. Things ranged from tea, poisoned tea, melted gold and modern soda, and so much more. (The rule was that they wouldn't be hurt by things like melted gold as long as it was poured only into a cup, with the cup acting as a heat shield, no matter how flimsy). This teapot had to be stolen from the table. Magic item 2: A series of cups (also had to be stolen from the table) with different glass colors in them. Each color of teacup indicated what it would turn tea from the teapot into. So, regardless what you rolled on the D100 table for the teapot, pouring it into the 'tea' teacup would result in the nearest 'tea' option on the table. Magic item 3: A series of coins, earned from playing games with Sheggoraz. They would say something different on each one, determined by a D4 table (Something along the lines of "You're a [quality] [pronoun/identifier]" so you could end up with "You're a lucky sprog" or "You're a handsome git" sort of thing. ), and it would have one mundane magical property when flipped, like cheering like a studio audience, or emitting confetti. My players loved them, and they never passed up an opportunity for a tea break. :)

This is scary perfect timing. And one common thing you forgot was "Weaker Magic Weapon" as I am now in possession of 2 +1 weapons and 1 +2 weapon. The 2 +1 are one handed and due to my greatsword power attack build in 5e they are useless to both me and the warlock I'm playing with. The +2 is only against good aligned npcs..... I keep getting unusable magic weapons please help.

First talk to your DM about it, say they are useless to you and you'd like something more useful. If option A doesn't work, grind the campaign to a halt by insisting on checking every village, town and city for anyone interested in buying or selling magic items, spend WEEKS of downtime searching if you have to. Make sure your DM gets the message, you want better stuff.

@@Miesha88 Oh no don't worry this was a joke because the module literally doesn't ever give a heavy weapons as treasure it's been a running gag between the party and dm that I'm carrying a armory of useless rare magic items since the Warlock and ranger already have magical weapons. Considering I did 104 to a demon 1 sessions ago with 2 2nd level smite crits in one turn I say I'm a happy oathbreaker. Good news is that after the dungeon he said I would be able to find cleric forge dwarfs that would be willing to help me craft my perfect greatsword. THE SUNEATER! Edit: Also in those last two sessions they treasure had a +1 dagger.... that I now added to the pile.

This video physically hurts me! We've been playing in a sandbox-ish dnd 5e campaign for over 2 years, we've got a new player 2 months ago or so and when he asked what magical items we had he was HORRIFIED to know that the strongest one we had was a druid staff (We didn't have druids) that can make "Nature" based spells stronger but weakens "Nature destroying" spells. Other than that, my character, a wizard, has a cube as a magical starter item (It's a spellbook that can't be... well... wet or burnt... Can still be destroyed), a monocle that changes the colors you look at to be your favorite color (In my character's case, brass). Some boots that leave a frosty path when I would walk (Got destroyed by a slime before the new guy arrived), a horseshoe that returns to the stick it's bound to... A jelly-bean bag that changes your mood and 1 more bead that is a small fireball, only 3d6 dmg and no knockback. We don't have anything good, EVER, and whenever we are given something that has an upside, it's got a greater downside, like a magic hat that, if you cast a levelled spell while wearing it, you roll 1d20, if it's odd, quasit, if it's even, rabbit, appears on your head. THAT QUASINT ALMOST KILLED MY POOR WIZARD after the new player "tried that item on a friend". (We knew what the item did, it was the second quasit), on a nat 1, the Dm said it's gonna be a REALLY BAD THING and on a 20, a... magical... Bunny...

@@JuMiKu We have... Had.. A +1 rapier that dealt magic dmg, the owner though... Left to find his family, so we might find his body somewhere, when it comes to martials, we don't really have that many, we are a mostly caster-based team, we did have a Fighter samurai with sharpshooter that WREAKED bosses, sadly, she died during our last bossfight so now the player will bring a Cleric. (Tempest Cleric, we really needed something like that) Also, we're all lvl 6... Well, 7 right now, so we're still doing rather okay-ish. The encounters are very difficult and punishing to go in, since, well, the only encounters that give us anything good are the ones against "Leaders" of enemy factions. So basically, huge threats, we almost tpk-ed, but we were lucky on some rolls and we had one diamond from the start of the campaign that we quickly used to bring back the only OG character left in the roster. We hope that we can salvage something from the big guy though. Another problem is that, the magic items that we get are... Well, based on the factions we help/destroy, since we are a good/neutral aligned party, we can't really go around with Fungal Necromancer gear, or Cow skulls and stuff like that. Plus, we suck at completing missions because whenever we are close to solving one, BAM, something happens and we can NOT afford to continue with the OG plan. Also, by something I really mean it's up to the dice, as I said before, this is a high absurdism game, we love playing in it, but the fuckery that was thrown at us, with one side of the party being out for one day do to a nat 1 on the random encounter, while the others had to clear up a camp full of OP poisoned frogs (Never want to see them again), to certain timed events which we knew of, happening when we least expected them. We literally managed to finish this questline ONLY because we were at the exact place 1 and a half days BEFORE the timed event occurred that we got to do the bossfight. Otherwise, we would have failed it.

My DM let me build my own weapon once. It was a flamethrower, he set the damage at 4D8 fire damage, range of 5 feet. I was a rogue at the time but that rogue is now dead. I am an artificer now. I asked if I could build a flamethrower. He said yes, used the old numbers, and my artificer infusion "Repeating Shot" was immediately applied. He has since then realized his mistake as what used to require a gallon of oil per shot (or 10gp) now has infinite ammo, 15 foot range, and various muzzle attachments for cone, line, or 5 foot misting spray for +50% bonus damage. It's my new favorite toy. My party does not approve of this weapon. They are still upset that my rogue almost blew them up in a vineyard using Molotov cocktails too close to the wine vats. One of the joke items, a bubble wand, produced useless bubbles, but did allow a person to breathe underwater for an hour. The player was planning on selling it, but never did. Only later did it become useful. One of the players had to jump into a well, with contaminated water. They had to go to the very bottom to retrieve the cursed stone, which was affecting the water and mutating anything that drank it. The only reason that they were able to do this was because of the bubble wand, which I threw in randomly.

However if the player rolls a nat 1, then the fishy transformation is rebounded onto them and they'll have to make a saving throw themselves. We just pass it around btwn the party and everyone's used it at one point or another, even if their character does not have a proficience in firearms. Primarily, he just wanted to dick around in this campagin and see just how unbalanced it was with 5E mechanics. We got to the magic lamp that gives us three wishes. Friend A. wanted all of us to become level 20. Friend B. wanted us to get any one item of our choice each (excluding artifacts). I asked my DM if, for my wish, I could use meta-game knowledge to ask for something. He said sure. I asked for a talisman of annihilation. He asked me why, as he had never heard of it before. I told him that it will take help us in taking control over a sphere of annihilation. We then proceeded to leave the tomb, and like a dry erase board, delete the tomb with its own sphere of annihilation. At the very end, we had nothing left but the treasure room and the skull. When the old bone-head decided to do his monologue and fly upwards, we placed the sphere right on top of him so he just floated into it. He got brained, we got the loot, and our next adventure took us to go and kill the lord of minotaurs himself Baphomet. It was a great time!

My DM last session had the magic items we looted from a buncha dead gnolls (most of which probably looked like they'd been put through a blender due to me putting them in a Blade Wall pit fight with the Paladin) be a club that deals no damage but causes things hit with it to dance in place for 1 minute and burn through their movement or complete a con save and a whip that makes sneezing noises when it's cracked

I don't usually go with gold instead of starting equipment. Unless I have some special build in mind, the equipment they give you is usually good enough for low levels.

I certainly love putting some random non magical card decks into the chests in dungeons and wait for my player's reaction.

Gave a player the "Master Bread Sword" it at the moment is a +1 Long Sword and can be enchanted by a baker (they do not know this cause who would whip out a blade in town without reason) with the finesse property, but when I heard joke idem I made one useful and thus far it has givin him a lot of serotonin, if anyone has an idea to make twist on it I will take input.

An item one of my friends likes to throw into his campaigns a lot is the "gold tax sword". Its a sword with 5 slots in the blade that can have gold pieces inserted into them. While at least one gold coin is inserted in a slot the sword deals an additional 5 damage, but a coin is consumed with each attack. If no coins are inserted and the user attacks with it, all attacks are made at disadvantage. Bonus action to insert 1d4 coins, one coin is consumed at each dawn, and the sword is cursed so the user cannot use any other weapons until the curse is lifted. Fun to use, but the tax gets annoying quick in drawn out combats

Once we had session where we got some wierd interactions, it turned out that there is an hourglass that when flipper makes time back for 8 hours. Only party and powerfull wizard knew about it and had memory of things from future. And od course just after we killed the wizard my character (not knowing yet what it does) flipped that hourglass. We woke up on tawern and realized that there is very alive and pissed wizard next door. Best two stage fight ever:)

Yeah it feels like unless the magical item either does three things either allow you to hit harder. allow you to avoid damage or just allow you to outright counter spells and the secret one being just outright ruin the game players usually just don't want it.

I received a javelin of returning in our last session. I wanted a crossbow but the javelin of returning was actually a lot cooler.

My first time DMing I gave my players stuff that let them fly without knowing how game breaking it would be. I also gave them a homebrew magic item that was basically just a bomb with 3 charges. It was meant to use the first charge for a puzzle and the other 2 for whatever, though they cheesed the puzzle without using the bomb and then promptly forgot about it.

My party stumbled upon an empty room in a dungeon but obviously we thought there had to be something. So we investigated an empty room like 5 times. And after finding nothing 4 times on the 5th time we find a middle finger rock like the world is trying to tell us something. So my bard takes it and it ends up being magical buffing viscous mockery to a d6 instead of a d4.

I had a DM who at one point considered a common/uncommon or two healing potions to be decent loot rewards for average to deadly encounters. I don’t know what DMs need to hear this, but dear god, don’t expect a bunch of level 7 adventurers to go through a fight where one of them nearly dies just to get a single use 2d4+2 and be happy about it.

DM once gave a party member a magic dreidel. One face granted a permanent debuff, two granted permanent buffs, and the fourth doubled your money. The first three faces used up the item, but it was indefinitely reusable if you got the money everytime. If I remember correctly. It might have only been the debuff that deactivated the item. What the DM was not expecting was for everyone in the party to pool their money and double it several times.

Gave a party a really good legendary item once that was perfect for anyone in the party to use. It sat in a bag of holding for the rest of the game.
