Hi, this is Shiyuan Xu, a ceramics artist traveling between China and US.
Porcelain is one of the most representable icons of Chinese ceramics. Do you know how porcelain is produced in China? I’m on a trip to the historical porcelain town Dehua in Fujian Province to find it out.
Dehua porcelain is more traditionally known in the West as ‘Blanc de Chine’ and Dehua has been the ceramic exporting center since early 18th century. The special characteristic of Dehua porcelain is the very small amount of iron oxide in it, allowing it to be fired in an oxidising atmosphere to a warm white or pale ivory color. This color makes it instantly recognizable and quite different from the porcelain from the Imperial kilns of Jingdezhen, which contains more iron and has to be fired in reduction.
