I liked seeing the difference between the two darker glazes, the first on camera was a very dark blue, but I really liked the second which had a redish hue to it both beautiful glazes. Loved the video!

These remind me of my grandmother who had rheumatoid arthritis and couldn't lift a cup of tea in a 'regular' weight cup. The lighter porcelain was a lifesaver for her, but finding a good-sized porcelain cup is strangely difficult in regular stores. If you don't mind a cup of tea that's about one third smaller than an ordinary mug it's not a problem but it meant there were quite a few half-finished cups of tea in my granny's because just one cup was never quite enough. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on the rapid growth of your channel!

Thanks Sarah. Glad you like the new glazes. I think there's still some room for experimentation and I certainly need another go at porcelain mugs-I learnt such a lot making these, thankfully the handling was easier than I imagined but the glazing was a bit more punishing, some worked, some didn't.

This was a beautiful video - I'm a bit of a novice potter and have heard people in the studio saying 'chucks' and i (very embarrasingly) didnt know what they meant and just assumed it was using some lumps of clay to attach to the wheel like normal. But I understand now how it is possilbe to trim all the way down the sides!!! thankyou - very helpful for my studio cred, love your work so so much :)

I so love your pottery. The simple lines are so appealing. I am a potter in Canada. Like you I liove to use and collect pottery from other potters I admire. My pottery is textured, mostly handbuilt, but I also include some throwing in many handbuilt peices and do throw some untextured shaped mugs and bowls.

I love these videos, they're so calming. I recently started using porcelain (only been throwing for a couple of months) and it just 'clicked' in a way that didn't happen with stoneware. Now I have to bully myself into using b-mix instead because I feel like I'm skipping steps. But I love porcelain so much more! It 'speaks' to me 😅

My instructor this semester said she'd look and see if there's any porcelain I can try to use. She also said that I would laugh and cry. If I am successful in making anything, I would love to try some cobalt blue underglaze if we have any, as a sort of nod to the classic look of Asian porcelain

She’s right! It’s a pain indeed to work with. Very punishing in comparison to the stoneware I use so be prepared for lots of pots to crack or break. The key is to throw it with porcelain slip and to compress and cone the clay far more than you usually do.

🍽 That's the best handling demonstration I have seen online. Anyway, vinegar in your slip clay used for attaching will help to avoid cracks. And time covering your pots to dry.

I don't have a pointer but use a long brush stuck in some clay, if the rim touches it doesn't deform.I don't use a bat but place a piece of paper across the top and remove with pot lifters.

It's interesting to see how you pull your handles after they've been attached. I've always done the bulk of the pulling first and I don't do much to them after attaching them. I'll try it your way next time. Interesting too that you pulled handles again on the pottery programme on TV.

The purple glaze with gold lichen-like spots you used on your porcelain lidded jar would look great on a porcelain mug, too, I think. Also, some of those dark glazes with the silvery metallic mottling you showed in your glaze test video might work too. Beautiful work, as usual!

Are there materials besides iron oxide that would respond better in a reduction atmosphere on porcelain specifically in comparison to your stoneware clay? With the latter, there's plenty of oxygen within the stone body that it contributes its own alchemy to the glazes in a way that the porcelain seems to miss.

It is indeed a chuck, I use them a lot! I believe in my espresso cup making video I show how I throw one. They're fairly common things, perhaps more so with the previous generation of potters.

Find a community center where you can take a course. Having other potters around you makes for a lovely interchange. You may start with throwing, but it’s also a great idea to try some hand building - i.e., pinching, coil building, and slabs. When you do hand building, you are almost always end up with a piece. As a beginning thrower, I would often have a whole session where I could get nothing centered at all! Good luck.
