Today I will be trying to see how many items I can store in the C8 that I would have been able to fit in my C7. I wanted to show off the utility of this mid-engine sports car and I hope you all enjoy.
When I opened the rear hatch it wast the first time opening a mid-engine car car after soaking it and I point out the areas you will have to spend extra time over previous gens.

Lol what's the concern? I had a Ferrari 355 GTS and the engine bay would get wet but would dry quickly once the engine was running. Any excess water or water marks can easily be cleaned up. I don't have my C8 yet but i will probably place a large beach towel over the engine when washing. I'll then dry the outside with a leaf blower before lifting the rear engine deck, remove the towel and dry up any residual water. No big deal.

Thank you for a really useful video. Regardless of what the water does in the engine compartment (it'll probably dry up from heat) detailing after a car wash IS something someone with a window to the engine compartment will care about. Trunk/frunk volume is something the Corvette crew has used in their marketing, supposedly 12.6 cu ft. Now we got to see how usable those cu ft are.

I have been pressure washing every single engine on cars I have owned for the past 40 years. Of course you wouldn’t put the nozzle 3 - 4 inches from delicate wiring/connectors. But if you simply adjust the spray or adjust the distance of the spray it works fantastic for removing road dust and gunk from every nook and cranny. Places you could never reach with any brush. Start off 6 feet away and work your way in to see what is the perfect threshold. I have never encountered a single engine problem or any damage. Just use common sense. It’s that simple.

Very few people are going to HAVE to open the engine bay in the rain. Most people don't even drive them in the rain... As an owner of many over the years, the interior or the front cargo will be plenty MOST of the time. The front cargo is more convenient to get things in and out of as well. The only use case I think you would actually "have" to open the engine bay in heavy rain is if you're golfing and it starts raining and you need to load your clubs in the pouring rain

Exactly dry the car before you open the hatch. Open the hatch dry the outside of the car again where the hatch dripped when opened...then dry inside of the hatch. Tips: 1. use a pressure washer only when the car is very dirty. 2. Use garden hose with no high pressure nozzle if possible when rinsing. 3. Use a soap bucket and a clean water bucket.

Thanks Morgan! For those of us who aren't influenced by an uncalled for rude and aggressive Car and Driver article. That's great information. Everyone should make sure to open your C8 hood and polish after washing. Keep it open for a while to let extra moisture evaporate. That way you have a beautiful view through the visible compartment unobstructed by water marks. Obviously the vents allow water. You obviously knew that. My only suggestion is to spray as little as possible toward the front of the car. You will always have to spray in there a little though.

I’ve never driven my c6 in the rain...but when I wash it (no commercial car washes) the water that does get in is minimal and it drips in when I put up the hood to dry all the edges and rubber seals around the engine...I love this C8 and you want to keep that engine and bay pristine IMHO....SUGGESTION...once the engine is cool open the compartment and place thin plastic sheeting over the engine and secure it with painters tape...then wash the car allowing the water to accumulate on top. Then either dry that with towels (I would probably use a leaf blower because I’m lazy and old) remove plastic...I’ve not seen this car person so maybe my idea won’t work...but just my thoughts at first glance...good luck!

While at the NCM 25th Anniversary bash in late August where they had the over 10 C8s on display and several cut-away C8s along with Tadge, Harlan, Kyle (BG Plant Manager) and the lead design team. I spoke with the lead designer responsible for the C8 engine bay. I asked him about water getting into the engine bay because of the top air vents and the big duct fan that pulls air (and water on raining days) directly into the engine bay. He told me (and repeated it) that everything in the engine bay is waterproof including every connector/connection, electrical component, and the engine itself. He said the number one priority was keeping the engine cool so in addition to the two big radiators upfront and the big fan located in the left air duct they had to add those open vents in the rear hatch for added airflow. He said the only damage that may occur is to the Corvette owners when they see how dirty the engine can & will get. So no, Car & Driver.....water getting into the engine bay will not hurt anything.

so I've read a lot of stupid comments... My suggestion as a degreed chemist > with 43 years coating experience…mind you...vist your Xpel dealer and order a small roll of their track film. I use it over my Xpel Ultimate (8.5 mils thick) on two cars, when I'm doing burn-outs with my LS7's. Personally that $$$$ ceramic coating won't protect the car from a small pebble at 125 mph > like the Xpel! On preventing this issue just place a piece of the Xpel track film (its a temporary film), across the vent, the hard block soft block PUR coating should adhere well enough, then allow the film to direct the water over the vent >easy peasy. you might have to tape the leading edge > check 4 adhesion before spraying. Avoid spraying the leading edge > use a soft damp cloth to wipe that after you're through > before you lift the film’s leading edge >and after make sure all dirt is off. Yes commenters, there are alternatives: 1. Glad food wrap or a roll of wrapping film from your work, you work-thieves...do not forget to tape the leading edge on the glass! >then voila...water rolls off. 2.Just use a high-quality tape from 3m etc. duct tape to block the vent > voila water rolls off again don’t spray the leading edge with high pressure, the tape might lift. 3. Alternately use blue paint tape 3” wide across the vent again, just don’t spray the leading edge with high pressure, so zero lifting On paint protection again part of my career was spent working on paint. I use what I feel is best IMHO the full Zaino system on all un-filmed paint areas and their polish and spray cleaner for in-between polish. On Xpel, use the Xpel film cleaner, spray with water then follow with a hi-quality carnauba wax. Hint 1: Use Stoddard solvent with mineral spirts (90-10 by volume) to pre-wet your carnauba wax pad., the waxes sold contain mineral spirits, but this trick allows you to apply a thinner film, hence easier to wipe off, and just as effective. The Stoddard solvent is a fast evaporating solvent, the small amount of MS slows it down for even wax oil consolidation. Hint:2: On Zaino use their cross linker to make the wax last longer. It’s worth it. Finally save your hard-earned bucks on that overpriced ceramic...use Xpel, in 10 years peel it off the paint underneath is still NEW! Those little pebbles (the ones (that with enough force) micro-chip your paint? and the ceramic (really if they hit too hard the paint fails at the base coat paint layer, or harder at metal), but with Xpel? No damage to the paint underneath. I have th experience, again in my career of having worked w/Xpel on reverse gravure and slot die web to web application that hard block soft block PUR coating for optical films used on cars like the Xpel/3M/generic for car care. All BTW use hard block soft block PUR coatings to protect the 8.5 mil thick film from being damaged. In that coating trial experience we QC tested these films with a neat QC device which broadcasts small pebbles at these films onto painted metal panels at 125 mph. To pass the coated film had to peel off with no paint damage, admittedly a pretty severe test - but none-the-less what Xpel and other manufacturers do. I've got Xpel ultimate on my '09 CGM Z06 3LZ. and my '15 Race Red Z/28 >neither have any film or paint damage, the Vette at 11 years, the Z/28 at 5. Sorry to be wordy, but it needed to be right on your new $89K. Z51 right?

The wet engine bay is a big design flaw in my opinion. GM should design a way to close the vents from inside the car. Is it possible to tape the vents shut before washing?
@justcallmejohn2833

Even on a front engine car a lot of water is spraying through the engine bay in the rain as you are driving. The biggest problem in the northern climates will be all the salt that get in all the nooks and crannies. All cars are just sacrificial anodes up here.

Since your vehicle is ceramic coated, just use air to blow-dry that compartment, or literally the whole car. With a ceramic coating the water literally comes off like it was never wet with a leaf blower/air compressor. The MetroVac air force blaster might be something you want to look into - as it's small enough to fit in that C8.

Morgan Crosbie can’t say I blame you, this amounts to an always dirty engine bay and extra exterior wash time and effort. I don’t mind doing the engine bay once a month but this is every single time! Solution, don’t drive in the rain! That’s it! Exotics never go out in the rain!!

Morgan Crosbie it’s normal. I have an R8. See it all the time. Air has to get in there, water follows. This is with all ICE cars.

My C5 hatch doesn't let water in when its closed. But right after I wash it, I know not to open it because then water will fall into it from the water channels of the hatch itself. Unless you want a car with old style rain gutters, you're going to have to wait until the car dries out before opening the hatch.

I'm assuming that you do not want to install the front license plate holder. Does it do permanent damage to the car? (Many cars cut holes in the front bumper cover to install the front license plate holder.) The really big questions is how are OPP or local police with your front plate on top of the dash? In US states with a front plate, that would be a big no-no and collect some tickets. Thankfully over time front plates get fewer in the US, not sure aboot Canada. (Sorry, I live in Metro Detroit and have had plenty of time in Canada, and measure your sense of humor with that minor kid on pronunciation.)

You will get a ticket with that plate on the inside dash. Don’t be stupid. I would use an air Compressor on the engine bay to rid the water. As far as washing and getting water in the engine compartment, I would wash and rinse it then go for a quick blast down the street then pull into a parking lot and dry it then most of the water will have been blown off. Also I would not be driving around with rattling gold clubs. Use a different mitt to wash the rims unless you like sand and dirt scratches in your paint. BTW, I would take a 63-67 Stingray Coupe before a 2020 Vette.

Guys, it is A-Okay and totally normal for water to run into the engine bay of an automobile. Engine bays need air. This exposes them to water. It’s totally normal and happens in every ICE powered car on the planet any time it rains or you wash it. They’re designed to take it.
