One thing I like about KZbin is that content creators like CH can put longer videos that go into detail over the nuances of history and help us understand the present better. Too many young people just scroll TikTok and get abbreviated history lessons and then act like experts on situations. The denuclearization of Ukraine is a tricky topic and important to understanding the current conflict. People like to blame recent US politicians for “disarming” Ukraine by supposedly withholding aid but in reality those actions were nothing compared to what happened in the 90’s. Many US officials have expressed regret in supporting the denuclearization of Ukraine, notably Bill Clinton.

Ukraine never had operational control over the nukes within its territory meaning they were essentially useless. Any attempt to gain operational control would be near impossible and would require significant manpower and resources which would be known by Russia as many former KGB assets in Ukraine were still loyal to Russia and as a result Russia would retaliate to any Ukraine attempt to gain control of the nukes by war. Also the solders at these nuclear missile sites were all loyal to Russia and not Ukraine. Therefore it is wrong to assume that Ukraine could have done anything with the nukes on its territory.

Ukraine had physical control over the nuclear weapons on its territory. Disabling the security controls would probably have been a matter of mere weeks if not days. If teenagers can jailbreak modern smartphones and game consoles, then there is no doubt that a country like Ukraine can hack those weapons. The security codes only served to eliminate some possibilities for accidents. And the whole point of gaining operational control over the weapons would be to let Russia know about this.

@@samuelcarter1276 I think you're getting "possible" v. "likelihood" mixed up. Sure, it was possible, but the likelihood it would have happened is low as the reconfigurations of the warheads would have been viewed as a provocation by Russia. The opening of the video seems to be more as setting the stage of the situation before he goes into detail of telling this story in history.

Krushev was not Ukrainian -- born in Russia to a 100% russian family, he just has spent a lot of time here. Brezhnev was half Moldovan. Ukraine had "it better" if you are talking about economy, because political repressions were really harsh. So after 1950-s when soviets spent a decade fighting UPA they decided to to give higher priority in supply to Ukraine to keep it more loyal and prevent insurrections/ Similar approach was in Baltic states and key cities like Moscow and Leningrad. Those people knew higher standards of living, so soviets "rationally bribed" them

If Africa had cheap energy sources it would quickly help the stable ones lift out of poverty.
