The Germans didn't get to Moscow in WW1, but they did force a Russian surrender by provoking revolution and civil war, so while we forget this because they lost the war overall, they technically _won._ The Germans got to Moscow in WW2, but never came close to capturing it. Napoléon actually _did_ capture the city. He still had to retreat though.

Well they didn't actually start it but the 7 year war was effectively a rehearsal for World War 1. With slightly different aliances. And a slightly (massively) more competent prussian ruler. And they were friends with britain right until you know what. I think (citation needed) the "the great" for frederick was actually a british invention. Maybe because him binding the french in Europe gave the British America. Binding them for 7 years against ridiculous odds.

Every war involving the major powers involving defence was a rehearsal for WW1 once guns became a thing. The Siege of Austria (the one with the Polish Hussairs) had trench warfare and that was in the 17th century. Really it was only the wars of Unification that did not have that type of warfare.
