On June 2 in 1953, history was made as a monarch was crowned. At the centre of the day was Queen Elizabeth II, poised and radiant in her magnificent Norman Hartnell gown. The weather was cold, grey and wet. But little could dampen the spirits of the estimated three million who lined the procession route nor the brilliance of the spectacle - ‘a thousand years of history woven into a gigantic blazing tapestry,' as The Tatler & Bystander’s columnist at the time Betty Kenward poetically put it.
