The debut of Family Guy was a big deal. They started out as an imitation of The Simpsons, but then The Simpsons made the mistake of imitating the imitation.

As a childhood Simpsons fan from 1989 to 1998, i can only enjoy and stomach seasons 1-10 which is exactly what my series DVD collection consists of since i initially stopped watching The Simpsons in 1999 and became quite fond of South Park, Futurama, and Family Guy these past twenty five years.

very quickly. I remember watching every episode during my late school years together with a friend. then there was one season where we were like "OK not the best". and then 1 season later we switched off during an episode and watched something else.

When Disney erased Apu, it was dead. Before that, it was meh. Lets be honest, The Simpsons never got much better than Who Shot Mr Burns? Then again, i thought the movie was pretty great.

Season 1 has more heart than any other season. Yeah the animation is a bit ropey but the stories and characters are still fantastic. But even with the animation, the S1 animation is far better than the sterile animation of anything in the past 20 years of Simpsons. It’s more scenic and looks more organic.

During covid i needed a pick up and i went back through the whole of classic Simpsons. I didnt know about the fandom politics, peoples opinions about Mike Skully and Al Jean, and had never heard the terms “Flanderisation” or “Zombie Simpsons”. I didn't know i was considered a ”purist” for mentally checking out in the 90s. I didn't even know it was that long ago i lost interest. But when a friend once told me they couldn't see how the earlier seasons were better i had such a strong reaction inside. I read a youtube comment once that described later seasons as “like watching an unfunny demon dance around in the skin of a loved one”. For Simpsons fans who grew up on the show in the 90s i think the decline feels something like The Inside/Out movies. It's tied up in the melancholy of growing up and losing things you love. But the classic seasons still hold a fascination because you can go back and appreciate that they trully were great. So during covid i wanted to really deep dive into everything i didn't as a kid; the producers, the writers, and what happened to the show. Then come up with a list of 20-30 episodes that showcase the kind of “ideal season”. Season 9 is such a clear downturn. But you can't condemn it like later seasons because it still has what i think is one of the top 30 episodes from the whole show, and one of Schwartzwelders best: The Cartridge Family. You can watch that episode right in the middle of a best of the best of the Simpsons and it still shines.

I think Futurama and Family Guy's debut led to The Simpsons adding more insult to injury on the show's viewership. Wasn't saying it as a bad thing.

You and I seem to park our car in the same garage with our thoughts on the Simpsons decline. But, if you pay close attention, you can see the change on Season 7. For me, I started to sour on it in Season 8 during the “Chili Cookoff” episode. Hot take, I know, but I hated that episode and it’s when the downward spiral truly began for me.

I was a "purist" once, but honestly, there are some great episodes post season 8. D'oh-ing in the wind from 10. Weekend at Burnsie's from 13. Trilogy of error, New Kids on the Blech(yvan eht nioj) and Skinner's sense of snow from 12. I'd say every season has at least one really good to great episode

The show is definitely a lot more cartoony in that era but I think not always bad, sometimes that still works pretty well or very well.

Klasky Csupo was behind the goofiness in Seasons 1-4, then in Season 5, the show shifted Film Roman all the way until 2016. Now Fox Television Animation controls the Animation on the rest of the show now.

I think you're missing a pretty important piece of context. Everyone involved with the Simpsons thought they were going to be cancelled around season 8. So that changed the way they approached the show. The "surf's up" ending is obviously self-aware, from a bunch of creators who thought the end was nigh. I don't disagree with anything you've said, but it's pretty fundamental to how the show changed in the late-classic era.

Season 15 is the best of the silver age in my opinion Season 9 is also a guilty pleasure of mine but that's probably because I'm a sucker for good Lisa Episodes Season 13 I absolutely hated as it has a lot of Homer screaming in that season & a lot of bad & mediocre episodes like The Sweetest Apu The Frying Game Weekend at Burnsie's The Old Man And The Key, Gump Roast its the worst of the silver Era for me.
@userdetails111 ай бұрын
Around the time Lisa became a radical feminist and we had entire episodes all about Lisa complaining about the size of mannequins, that was the start of the end for me. I started tuning out when I realised an episode was focused on Lisa, and not long after that I lost interest altogether. It's not the same show anymore, the characters are different and Flanderised (Homer- stupid, Bart- Stupid, Lisa- annoying, Marge- whatever it is she does) and the writers are different. The jokes and storylines we laughed at in the early days just won't happen anymore because that isn't what today's writers can do.

all i know is whenever an animated show starts overusing musicals then it's on its way out. simpsons held out for a while and the early musical numbers they did were hilarious but they've definitely used it as a crutch for a while now

I'd say season11 Behind the music episode would've been a great series finale. Simpsons took a turn for the worst at the and of season 12 and and season 13 as a whole. True season 13 was better but still "off" I couldn't take it anymore

I didn't laugh at any of the jokes and I decided to stop watching and decided to watch futurama instead and had a way better experience. I don't know what it is but for some reason I just can't seem to get into the simpsons anymore.

Lisa got preachy is a common complaint I think is pretty unfair, I don't think she really got that much so or that what she did become was really bad, she was opinionated from beginning and at times self-righteous but no not that much, a lot of people seem to hate that she's strongly opinionated at all.
