The Champions League final is almost upon us. To celebrate, we have cordoned off almost an entire week to celebrate a few Champions League nearly men since the competition changed format from the European Cup in 1992.
We’ll be celebrating what almost was a return to a Scottish finalist in 1993, 26 years since the Lisbon Lions of Celtic, and ponder just how close Rangers were to winning the first-ever edition of the Champions League.
We’ll celebrate what ought to have been a new dominant era in the late 1990s, when Juventus appeared at their third European final in 1997, only to be stunned by Borussia Dortmund, and then by Real Madrid the year after.
We’re sure to discuss Borussia Dortmund themselves, as they returned to the Champions League final after 16 years away, only to be stopped by a last-minute winning goal from Arjen Robben and their arch-rivals Bayern Munich.
We’ll tell you the tales of more recent finals, of Atletico Madrid’s penalty heartbreak in 2016, of PSG almost becoming the second French club to win the Champions League in 2020 and of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola, who came so close last year in what is still their only final.
Let’s get stuck in.
