I’ll tell you how rare it is. Where I hunt deer were released back in the 1960s. Before then there were none. Between my dad my grandfather and myself (I am 32) we’ve never killed a 130” in the 60 years we have had whitetail. We let 120s walk for 15 years and they never changed. Now we shoot the 120s again. That’s all our genetics allow. We’ve had bucks measure under 80” aged 6+ years by biologists.

Also sounds like you have poor nutrition in your area and need to consider influencing the soil quality, adding in more high nutrition food sources, ample healthy water, and minerals blocks. That alone will add 20-30 inches of horn a year to the herd in your area. Also, you need to be more adamant about selective harvests on smaller less desirable bucks for a few years and continue to let the 120s with big frames live.
@camwinston5248Ай бұрын
@@User-sb9hx while this is all well an good and your comment holds some validity an merit in some very pinpoint situations..revisit and review the two comments above you once again please and give them some additional thought. What you are suggesting is all fine,well and good IF you have not hundreds but thousands of discretionary dollars and hundreds of hours of time as well AND only IF you have a strain of animals or herd of deer that HAVE this genetic potential to express..and all for WHAT a few extra inches of bone on a bucks head ? ..or the purported possibility of a 20-30 inch jump ? Yes that can take place, in a very SPECIFIC situation..that 90% of people do not have or have access too..carrying capacity of the land and Buck to doe ratio are FAR more important to the health of a local deer herd and to give the potential of genetics to shine thru..and if you would like to get really serious your local deer herd is more than capable of taking care of itself..we might not like all the results of it but they will be what they're going to be regardless of what we do ..without people spending their mortgage note to achieve it..the fact is that all this "buck" trophy" deer management, while when first started was informative and useful and can be now as far as land setup,hunting knowledge..it has become misguided and very unrealistic for the majority of people and most deer herds..not to mention it has become VERY prohibitively EXSPENSIVE..an for the most part is nothing more than a multi-billion dollar con job to SELL billions of dollars of products to that end..and for what a FEW more inches of bone! .this scam has been going on for 3 decades now.

I’d argue the main factor of large deer population decline is the use of trail cameras and apps like onx and HuntStand. They are all great but in retrospect, they allow people who can’t track deer, to easier hunt without putting in the leg work. I’d love for Ohio to make trail cameras and baiting piles illegal year round. Food plots are ok only because it’s work involved and feeds the dee something decent instead of corn.

5 bucks over 200” yeah right. The actual odds of having a 200+ buck on your property is almost impossible. There are only about 3000 deer registered over 200” in the last 200 years out of the hundreds and thousands killed every year. Even a well managed property the odds are still very low. It take a lot for a deer to grow that big. Not just age and population. And for the people who talk about high fence. Those aren’t natural deer. High fence deer are genetically modified through the use of steroids, forced breeding specific genetic, and high protein diet. None of which you’ll get in a natural setting.

It was nothing new for local farmers and their families or friends to do drives during gun season and shoot a 170 typical or something bigger and just cut the rack out and hang it up with the rest out in the barn. Iowa got the land of the giants name because of TV shows coming here from other states.
