Not long ago, Sergio Perez’s Red Bull future seemed doomed. He had little hope of a new deal to keep him at the team in 2025.
There were even rumours he might be replaced for this season despite being under contract.
But Perez hung on and has started the season well. Not ‘Max Verstappen well’, but he’s scored valuable points, finished on the podium in four out of five races - as well as taking third in the China sprint - and kept out of trouble.
So how has he turned it around and what does it mean for his chances of staying for 2025 (and beyond)?

In summary: car development is always an impossible compromise between driver comfort and engineering hypotheticals. A hypothetically faster car with a less comfortable driver is usually slower than a compromised car that a driver can push to its limits. Red Bull has found that compromise for Checo. And, while he'll never be able to touch Max on a consistent basis, he can now perform to the ceiling of his abilities and provide a more reliable P2/P3 for the team.
@coreytrevor3910
@coreytrevor3910 Ай бұрын
Makes a ton of sense and its also why Max is so much faster in the "same" car. Max can push it farther. I don't think anyone on the current grid is as sharp and confident as Max is right now. Could Red Bull extract more points out of driver #2 if they pick up Sainz or even Yuki as a long shot....maybe. But prolly not. Rico needs to go as he brings nothing to the table and is taking up a seat from Liam. Red Bull would be more comfortable with Liam doing a full season at RB before giving him a shot at Red Bull. Checo is the best option going forward no matter how you break it down

@@gopr3117 But that doesnt make sense. The are overall is built in a way that trades risk for reward better. Last year Checo had issues when he ran out of skill. Taking risks and losing is what got him to fall off. Red Bull knows they can get away with certain risk because Max can handle it. But to devolp a car based on Max isn't what they are doing. If you put Max in a Merc or Ferrari he is going to show them that the snappy the car the faster he can drive it. Red Bull has a car that most likely most drivers can't drive FAST. The keyword here is FAST. Checo can wheel the Red Bull wheel. but pushing the car to the limit MAx does is why gets him into trouble.

@@coreytrevor3910 that stay true if Newey still in the team and Red Bull is still dominating. But since he will leave and the new regulations is around the corner, i think they will only sign Perez for 1 year to see what gonna happen. If their new car is no longer the best car in the grid, they might find the need to get a different driver. Perez driving style is not that compatible to that red bull's car.

The Verstappen factor is so real at Red Bull. Not so much because they are designing around Verstappen, but because they can put any performance upgrades and Max can live with it. Perez chasing setup changes that make him more comfortable probably put the car out of that sweet spot and compounded his problems. Now that he is accepting he has to live with the car he has, he is doing much, much better. Props to Checo for being able to do what his predecessors couldn't, hopefully he keeps this up for the long term.

In my opinion, Ricciardo was never a realistic option for the second seat. His McClaren days dropped his prospects to an all-time low, and his Alpha Tauri drive was going to require a superstar comeback to put him in the conversation realistically. The fact that Yuki *ever* looked better than him last season was enough for me to say that he probably wouldn't get the seat, and with how things are going this season, I still think the same. Pérez improved, Ricciardo has stagnated. That's the difference to me

It's enough to finish the season behind Tsunoda, just not too far behind. I like how Perez has set targets for his setup and overall season results. It's not like last year, where he said he would be fighting Verstappen for the championship. Where did that lead him to? Mistakes. This year, however, he's kept it more realistic and at point. He's going for targets which are possible for him. And that will justify his spot at red bull if he continues further.

In the age of social media plagued with nameless Twitter accounts with football player profile pictures trolling endlessly, you rarely see people giving credit to an otherwise easy target as a pilot struggling, I'm glad he's getting the recognition for his hard work this year since he has always been fast and reliable on sundays, just understandably outshined by a generational monster like verstappen that would put quite possibly anyone else on the grid on the same predicaments.

The reality is that car 1 won the Chinese GP coasting by 13+ seconds. The performance gap between the Red Bull and the rest of the grid is once again huge. Max went a second quicker than everyone the lap after passing Lewis in the sprint - that is unmasked pace. The fact that Perez still can’t put that car 2nd tells you that the same shambles is likely coming when the performance gap becomes less astronomical as the Red Bull team shift focus to 2025.

Perez, Fisichella, Trulli, Webber, Hulk, Albon, Norris, and Gasly all have something in common. When they race for a midfield team that leaned their car development towards them, their performances were brilliant and sometimes punched well above the weight of their machinery. However with two vastly different driving approaches in the same car, we have a Button-Hamilton situation at RBR where they HAVE TO choose to prioritise one driver over the other. The most well balanced driver pairings to exist in modern F1 have always been able to cope with whatever the team decided was best: example of Lewis-Rosberg, Senna-Prost, Prost-Lauda, Mansell-Piquet, and currently Sainz-Leclerc. Perez can’t cope with Verstappen’s setups as it costs him performance and so it seems that they’ll compromise to keep him a little happier but his happiness falls outside the optimal performance window of the car compared to Verstappen.

Is it a dominant car? Or is Max just a dominant driver? RB is no doubt the fastest car on the grid, but without Max it would be at most 0.3s a lap faster.

Bro can we stop the hate on Perez please. Ppl want him to beat Max so bad 😂. It's not like that. F1 is teams putting two cars to score the most points by the end of the season. Even with all his upsets last season. He mopped the floor with any other car outside of his partner. Why would Red Bull consider moving away from Perez. Just his defense alone for Max and how he makes cars behind Max burn tyre degradation is excellent. Perez is not going anywhere. It would be a dumb move for Red Bull to let him go 🤷🏾‍♂️

I can't see Red Bull making a decision on the second seat until around September. It's also likely that unless it is someone like Sainz, it will only be a one-year deal. If staying in F1 is Perez's long-term goal, he should look for a seat at one of the lower teams.

He cant use the car to 100% if its made exactly for what Max wants, he can find some things manageable but on the full spectrum he will struggle with a car that’s absolutely not made for him. Thats why he struggles and whipes so much due to him pushing his limits with a car that’s not made for his limits

Checo steers a lot with the throttle, Max's is an extreme short corner driver rotating the car on braking. The more Perez drives it like Max the faster he will be. But he can't beat Max consistently as he dulls down the car slightly to make it liveable for him, yet Max actually likes it that nervous.

@@procatprocat9647 He's earned respect over the last 11 years. The only people who don't respect him are the ones who have no actual grasp of the sport. To say he's an average number 2 when the No.1 is Verstappen is extremely laughable even to begin with, and that's ignoring all the technical stuff... However WITH the technical stuff included in the debate, calling Checo an average no.2 is close to moronic. It's literally took THIS LONG for news outlets like The Race have FINALLY started citing the technical side of things... If only people like Driver61 had the same reach...

The disrespect was earned. Perez is extremely fortunate enough to drive a championship winning car but he doesn’t do anything with it. Last season he wasn’t even consistently on the podiums, getting knocked out of qualifying frequently. Where’s the disrespect? Honestly these number 2 drivers can underperform for years and it’s all fine whereas top drivers don’t even get that opportunity- Schumacher was forced to leave Ferrari for no genuine reason. Kimi was made to quit even though he won a WDC and was competitive in 2009. Vettel was let go despite only finishing 24points behind Leclerc despite the overwhelming reliability issues. Meanwhile waste of space drivers like Massa, Perez, Bottas, Webber, Barrichello finish 100-200 points behind their teammate and they get to stay indefinitely

Yet 5 Races and a sprint in, this season the second Red Bull scored TWENTY points LESS than last season. And that is WITH a Max DNF that should have been an easy win, which didn't happen last season. So this season is WORSE than last year. It MIGHT get better than last year, but that remains to be seen. Personally I doubt it.

2nd car was a liability in 2007. Alonso’s not doing anything with Max as his teammate. I bet even if Redbull offered him that seat along with $200m a year salary he would turn it down to not get exposed. That’s why he walked away from the V8 Redbull, early V6 Mercedes contracts that he himself said was offered to him.
