It's based on the Fire & Blood history book and The World of Ice and Fire history book. These are all written by Maesters and a Court Jester named Mushroom, so the narrators are a bit biased and indulgent at times. They can be considered "unreliable" if the series wishes to change certain details. I don't know how much that applies in this circumstance, so who knows. We'll have to wait it out, I suppose. From what I heard they are solely only covering the Dance of the dragons, and it is only going to be 3-4 seasons long (which sounds right to me given the content of the dance).
