Just as you didn't really own "your" bedroom growing up -- the whole house belonged to your parents and they just entrusted that room to you -- technically they didn't even own their own house as everything in the country belongs to the King, and he just entrusts it to them.

The Guardian is hardly a neutral observer in this so-called controversy. Last week, Polly Toynbee (Guardian columnist) opined that the UK had had "a surfeit of royal folderol" recently, what with the Platinum Jubilee, the Royal Funeral and now the Coronation. All good journalism, until you stop to think. The Platinum Jubilee was a one off. There had never, ever, been a platinum jubilee in British history, and it is highly unlikely that there will ever be one again. The Royal Funeral sparked an outpouring of sentiment for which even the planners were unprepared - nobody had foreseen the crowds lined the route of the cortege through the Scottish countryside, or the fact that so many people would queue through the night so enter Westminster Hall. So far as the coronation is concerned, the last one was in 1953. Look at it like that, and where is "the surfeit". Polly Toynbee used to do better than that. She is in danger of turning into the archly bigoted Jan Moir (Are you thinking what she's thinking?) of the Daily Mail, or Glenda Slag from Private Eye.
