"Somer Assault" on the TG16 marks yet another "Rapid-Fire Release" that somehow proves more interesting to me than the main three in an episode. It's oddball ideas like a puzzle platformer starring a Slinky that have kept me coming back to this show and wishing such obscure games were championed more often and made available for modern audiences. Now the only question is who do I recommend this to? Former pro wrestler "Pretty Boy" Doug Somer? People obsessed with the Slinky toy? Fans of the "Log Song" from "Ren and Stimpy?" I do get the feeling that "Somer" would be great for a snack and fit on my back, so...

Hearing Dylan talk about the tennis games needing unique spins on gameplay made me think of World Court Tennis on the TurboGrafx-16. While it had basic tennis gameplay, it also had a 'Quest' mode. You go on a quest to defeat some kind of evil tennis player or something. It plays like an old Dragon Quest rpg. But rather than level up the player, winning battles nets you money that you can spend on tennis shoes, rackets, and clothing that will raise your overall 'stats'. I remember that its actually possible to challenge the final boss pretty early on. But while I'm not sure if he was impossible to beat, it sure felt like it. You needed to adventure out and find a magical tennis ball that would allow you to play against him on a more equal type of match. I always enjoyed playing this game when I was younger. It doesn't really change the gameplay of tennis, but it offers enough of a unique spin on it to be fun.

4:06 Just to be clear, the SegaCD version has never been ported. You can get the DOS version on GOG for a few bucks. And it is a very good game, if you like cyberpunk and can put up with the usual quirks of 90s adventure games.

OMFG, this episode was such a treat! Two obscure games, Power Moves and Rise of the Dragon, featured in the same episode? Yes please! I remember spoofing the hilarious cover art of Deadly Moves in doodles I'd put in the margins of my notebooks during college lectures. I also would laugh pretty hard at the 'dollar store brand' character designs, especially Warren; he looked like he was being blackmailed and trying to see his kidnapped wife and kids again lmao. Also, I freaking loved watching you play (and appropriately mock) Rise of the Dragon; tis a damn shame Sega CDs put absolutely no investment into their CON score because just looking at them funny would render them defunct.

Rise of the Dragon is one of two games on Sega CD I owned in the 90s and didn't complete (the other being Dark Wizard, which is on my retirement completion bucket list alongside Ogre Battle). A friend and I were playing the game together - one of us actually playing, the other helping with notes and puzzles. We screwed up one of the later puzzle solutions that led to a game over, and we thought we missed a clue somewhere and had to restart the game, so we took a break... that's lasted about 26 years or so. We have talked about trying to get back to finishing it over the decades, but life does what it does. Someday, someday....

Man I love this show ^_^ I hope you never stop making it. To anyone born over 30 years ago, this show will be entertaining 'til the day we die :) I'm really looking forward to 30 years from now when Dylan has to talk about the 235 games release on Steam this week 🤣 Quick question: I saw you list a game at $76 even this week. Sometimes you'll say >$10 ("just over ten dollars") and sometimes you'll see $11 (which is about as "just over ten dollars" as one could reasonably expect to find). So how do you determine the prices for the value changes at the end of each episode (i.e. why was this $76 instead of >$75)?

It doesn't surprise me that Rise of the Dragon is really common. It was on store shelves for a long time. I remember seeing it at a game store (EB or one of the other ones that GameStop bought out) way back in 1998 or so at the Sea-Tac Mall (which is not in Sea-Tac and has since been renamed.) I remember it being about the only time I ever saw a Sega-CD game in a store.

Little secret about the final boss of Rise of the Dragon: if you have a bomb left over, you can walk next to the boss and press A+B and hold them for a second, you will plant on on him and kill him in one hit. I’ve never seen anyone else use this trick! I discovered it on one of my many playthroughs back in the 90s.

I'm experiencing a Mandela Effect with Power Moves on the SNES. I do remember the title being sanitized. But, I remember it being called *Lethal Moves* on SNES. I also played the heck out of Deadly Moves on the Genesis. Fond memories of my friend throwing his controller and rage quitting. Good times playing a mediocre fighting game.👌 Edit: I forgot I also owned Rise of the Dragon (had to see the gameplay). Got it on clearance at K-mart along with Bram Stoker's Dracula and Eternal Champions for the Sega CD.
