Streets of Rage is practically timeless. My nephew was 5 when I got the 4th game on Steam and he watched me play at first, and was immediately infatuated with the series as a result. He played through all four of them with me later on. Streets of Rage babyyyyy!

congrats on the comeback Jared (even if you don't think of it as a comeback). This is the exact kind of show I want to see on KZbin. Short fun little factoids that don't prattle on and on about every little detail. I like how in 10-15 minutes you put 3 different segments to keep it feeling fresh. I'm glad you didn't exile yourself into the netherealm of streaming because I feel like that's the equivalent of the faded pop star doing residencies in Vegas. Glad you're still on KZbin and you've come up with an idea that seems obvious yet no one has done it, keep it up!

Objection! Konami's first actual game was NOT Sunset Riders, as a sliding tile puzzle game published by Micronet would beat it by 2 years. Junction, a game licensed by Konami for release on the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1990, had players sliding tiles to create pathways for a rolling ball in order to score points. While it may not directly be handled by Konami, and the reason for the licensing is unclear as it doesn't have much connection to any of their other works, Junction was released well before Sunset Riders would see the light of day.

I was never a big fan of Westerns growing up like my grandfather, but I played the bejesus out of Sunset Riders on Sega Genesis, popping it in when I felt like shooting up a town full of brigands and dueling with Richard Rose. Hell, the Sound Test in the game got more play than some dud games I owned. I knew that the SNES port was more faithful to the arcade even back then, but for whatever reason I never hunted a copy down, content with my Genesis copy. This game being a test of sorts makes a lot of sense considering its differences. Man, this was a really good week in the 90s. Solid games.
@KairuHakubi2 жыл бұрын
videogames always make westerns better, from Gunsmoke all the way to RDR2. Because they take out a lot of the boring, dramatic early 20th century film elements and just stick to shooty gun ridey horse awesome music twangs.
@LordSephleon2 жыл бұрын
@@KairuHakubi I forgot about Gunsmoke! I used to play that game a lot when I was younger as well (both in the arcades and on NES), but it didn't keep me like Sunset Riders did. Red Dead Redemption 1 was definitely the last Western game I played, and boy did I play that one too. :)

Fun little story, a neighbour had Sunset Riders for the Mega Drive while a friend from school got the SNES version. We were all baffled by how different the games were and so eventually assumed that the SNES version had to be a sequel that didn‘t have the 2 in the titel for some reason. This idea eventually spread to all the schools in the area, weirdly enough.

LISTEN: I Know Genesis Sunsetriders isn't as cool as the SNES or Arcade version, OK? but it was a big deal over here in Argentina! a lot of kids played it like crazy, we loved every second of it! The voice samples weren't as cool, but we didn't care: we couldn't understand english (although the speech bubbles were a good workaround!). Also, THAT PINK PONCHO! The irony was that the Sega Mega Drive/ Genesis had a headstart over the SNES and was popular in the West. I am sure that if in Japan, there were more mainstream JRPGs and other games that people recognised early on, The Mega Drive had great JRPGs, platformers, sports games and more; so I feel like it was a missed opportunity to strike the iron while it was hot. Edit - To the point about Streets of Rage 2. While I agree that it is superior in most ways (except the music which I think that they are equal in) that isn't saying much as the first game an amazing game that is also a must play.

I played Jeopardy! for SNES a lot as a kid. Since I was so little, I would just type random things instead of actually trying to answer the questions. But then one time, one of the categories was about toys and actually knowing the answers for once felt amazing. But then one of the CPUs got a daily double on one of the toy questions and I was mad I couldn't answer it.

Streets of Rage 2 isn't better than the first in every conceivable way, specially in the soundtrack, which is somewhat subjective but the first is more ballad centric than the sequel. The hit sounds of SOR 2 are more slaps than punches, whereas the first has better and beefier hitting sounds. The atmosphere of the first is also unique and while the sprites are downplayed as smaller=worst for most people, in beat 'em ups this translates to more room for enemies. Both games are different enough so that each should be equally well regarded and not looked down for technicalities of the time, it would be like comparing Revenge of Shinobi with Shinobi III, both great games, each with their own qualities, one is so iconic and atmospheric, the other much more advanced and nuanced, but one could hardly replace the other.

Magical Quest was one of those childhood rental only games of mine that I actually got to own and then beat a few years ago after I secured myself a second actual SNES and the cart. Surprisingly I wasn't that far off from beating it as a kid - I got locked on the boss of the snow level where you need to like, grappling hook dodge it as it skis around a half pipe that is the level. But after that was only Pete's castle and the very mega man-esque final boss since you're using the basically-mega-man-in-a-turban magician costume for that. Surprised myself and had a great time.

Speaking of attempts at Streets of Rage 4, there's this Chinese fighting game called Dong Dong Never Die from around 2009 or so. It's literally some dude got a bunch of friends and acquaintances together, gave them some costumes, and shot stuff on a green screen, and is surprisingly funny/fun. But the relevant part is at the end. I can't remember if it's a secret ending or not, but there's an ending in the game where the creator shills a promised but never delivered Streets of Rage 4 of their own.
