‘Rocketman’ production designer Marcus Rowland takes us through his process of turning London, the film's shooting location, into an early 1970’s Los Angeles. From the infamous West Hollywood venue, Troubadour, to a house party at Mama Cass's in Laurel Canyon, Rowland was tasked with making the film appear as though the it traveled back in time to Elton John’s version of LA when he first got his start.

I’ll never understand how this movie only got one Oscar nomination. For best song.

I'm 20 and have always liked Elton John. Rocketman gave my generation an appreciation for Elton as well, and that was exciting.

the complexity of this makes me wonder how long it took for the production designer to make the set for 1917

Mostly practical designs as it seems. That's a love of manpower to do things like these but I'd love to work on a movie like that (I'm a set dresser)

wouldn't it be cheaper to just shoot it in LA though? I know they'd still need to build sets & etc. but the cars would be much easier to find, the set pieces would be cheaper & easier to source therefore even less expensive, can anybody tell me what the reason is for shooting this movie in the UK instead of where it actually took place which also happens to be the "entertainment capital of the world"?

So its not only about the cost of set making and dressing. There are other costs too which are involved like the air tickets, wear and tear, stay of the crew, government permissions of a particular country, rent for each day of a particular location, change in currency, hotel and food cost of the crew and other lots of more things involved. Its whole lot of a task for production to handle, so much of things and massive money involved and in selective time frame.
