Not really, there aren’t many examples of that. Closest would be Ridley Scott back in the day. Successful production designers do the job because they find it fulfilling and are just as integral to the film’s look and feel as the director, if not more so, depending on who directs. Some filmmakers focus almost entirely on acting alone and let their cinematographers and production designers determine the actual look and feel.
