+Sean LaMountain You're looking at the wrong area. It drills a square hole, it is not a square hole itself. Look at the part protruding from the box. It is moving in a square motion (the little drill bit).

Sean, it does hit the corner. Either trust me or check the maths your self ;-)

+Chris Sangwin Sorry, but it doesn't in your video. I have watched it at 0.25x and it doesn't touch the corners. It drills something very close to it but not a completely square hole.

It has an intermediate 'stable' state, depending on from _where_ you release it. If it's released by its higher apex, it falls to the intermediate position before it falls down flat. From the bottom, it just falls over.

that is the mechanism that allows the drill (that that is part of) to drill a square hole. Thats why it is sitting on a piece of wood when it shows the zoomed out bit

lol its basically just a piece of metal rotating in a block of wood, like you said it doesn't hit the corners and it wouldn't pivot like that in a pliable surface, rather, it would drill a circular (or whatever shit shape) hole.
@jackmajordesync1734
@jackmajordesync1734 9 жыл бұрын
fuflang if you watch at the 3:10 mark, you can see the rounded triangular part is not the cutter, but in fact part of the mechanism.There is an extrusion coming out of the rounded triangular part that is the cutter.

I have ask myself this every day and every night for the last nine years. I have put blood, sweat and tears into contemplating the circularity of my circle and I finally thought I had found the answer to my questions. Nope, my circle's circularity is still most definitely in question.
@andrewtomasi7372
@andrewtomasi7372 8 жыл бұрын
From someone who has shared in this very doubt, You're circle will reach maximum circularity when the radius is constant all the way around. Let that be your guide, and may you reach that ultimate level of inner peace achieved only by those who know to what degree of trigonometric perfection their circle appertains.

The reason why this video is so interesting is that it creates movement through unexpected methods. Such as the linkages shown at the end. Such complex methods (yet relatively simple) through joints in metal pieces stabilises the flawed ability for humans to draw straight lines without the need of something the pen can use a direct guide to such as a ruler. The use of simple mechanisms can be incorporated for precise medical operations, intricate production of cars and ETMs, etc.

I thought that for a long time, but then I just realized that the reuleaux rotor-esque thing isn't what's drilling the hole, and the hole they are talking about isn't the square that's already there. The square is the shape that's being drawn by the silver thing protruding from the curved thing. You can see it best from the second angle. 2:57

OK, I have a question. Someone I knew had a piece of plastic similar to that unstable polyhedron. But the curved bottom surface had angles to it like you were looking at a straight boomerang or propeller. You could spin it in one direction. But when you would spin it in the other it would wobble and shake until it ended up spinning in the opposite direction. What do you call it?
