How Russia and Ukraine are struggling to keep up artillery ammunition supplies | DW Analysis

Both Russia and Ukraine have been focusing on long range weapons. Which means finding enough of this has become a major priority for both sides. They are burning through a lot of resources as they pound each other with long-range artillery weapons. The weapons themselves come in many shapes and sizes.
Estimates for how much ammunition both sides are using in the Ukraine war vary widely. Western experts estimate Ukraine used between 6,000 to 7,000 artillery shells a day in the summer of 2022, and Russia between 20,000 and 60,000. Exact numbers are military secrets. But even when considering conservative estimates, that's more than either side can produce itself. The Unites States, Ukraine's main supplier of ammunition, only produced around 500 rounds a day at the time. And that is just counting conventional shells, not rockets.
When it comes to Russian supplies, it's clear the country is digging deep into its stocks. Ukrainian officials say Russia is firing less artillery shells now than last year, and using old ammunition, which suggests the Russian military is trying to conserve shells.
Ukraine on the other hand has to deal with a mix of old Soviet equipment and modern weapons supplied by Western allies. Ukraine is dependent on those allies to deliver enough ammunition for the weapons they provided. And they need deal with the logistical issues, caused by all these different weapons needing all kinds of different supplies and parts.44Both sides are now having to ration supplies, including ammunition. And upping capacities to re-stock will take a significant amount of time. For that, both sides depend on other nations. As the war drags on, these issues are likely to become even more important. Russia is expected to launch a fresh offensive that will keep burning through its stocks - and Ukraine is already pleading with the West for more ammunition to defend itself.”

Quote: The US Army announced Tuesday that it had awarded $522 million in orders to two companies to manufacture 155 mm artillery ammunition for Ukraine. The orders, officially decided on January 30, went to Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. and Global Military Products Inc. and came amid worries that Ukraine was fast depleting the stockpiles of artillery shells from the United States and other allies. Deliveries of the new ammunition are scheduled to begin in March of this year, the Army said in a statement.

Artillary weapons have always been the gods of war because they can achieve further distance with higher damage. The best method to counter it is get close as possible and try to fight the enemy with light weapons. This is a technique used by the pla army during the korean war.

Artillery only rule in the absence of airpower. In the war in Ukraine we can therefore se Artillery as the king of war but for NATO airpower is the most important component and will so be in the future. In Korea China learnt that without airpower its infantery and tanks could not be suplied over time, however they tried to compensate for that by infiltrating the weaker points of defence. The truth is that to win a war you need to be equipped with the entire toolkit. Russia started the attacked without infantery and lost their tanks, now they attack with to little armour and their infantery dies in mass. The losses Russia will suffer is enormus and it will become weak for decades if they keep this war going for longer.

@Rico Thampaty, so why can’t Russia make any solid achievements even though they have more troops and got the surprise attack in the beginning. They are losing at a rate of 7 Russian troops to 1 Ukrainian troop in the battle in the East. And this is the Ukraine army, not NATO and the US current modern weapons. You do realize Ukraine wasn’t even on the top 20 modern armies before the war. Russia would fold in a week against the US. Ukraine isn’t even using the current weapons the US uses and they are only getting outdated weapons sitting in our warehouses. And they are still asking for our outdated F-16’s. You don’t seem to be living in reality. Russia’s army is seriously behind. They are using Iranian made drones and those are doing better than many of Russian made missiles. That’s an embarrassment and having to beg North Korea for ammunition only shows that you are just wrong. Have a good day.

I don't believe the problems with artillery ammunition for Ukraine are unsolveable. There is a number of countries of 155mm ammo manufacturers around the world - many of whom are have good relations with NATO. The Russians started with something like 17 million artillery rounds of all types, and have fired off a little more than half. This doesn’t count their production in the meantime, which at baseline was higher than the West. Russia doesn’t have a tank army, it has an artillery army with lots of tanks. They have more artillery systems in storage than in use, although the condition of that equipment is subject to question, just like their enormous reserve tank park. Russia fights long wars, so they make sure to have lots of stuff. Invariably their first year of wars have consisted of throwing bodies at their problems while they mobilize more men and equipment. What we have seen for the last year is entirely consistent with how Russia fights wars.

They will be inserting 1800 tanks into the next offensive, from an original count (by the west) of over 14,500 tanks. I don't know what the F you have been listening to Bien ...... do your own research or listen to The Duran for an unbiased update. Ukraine is nearing its event horizon.

There's no "coercement" of any kind here. What is being discussed is putting out these large volume orders. Historically NATO countries tend to order just enough ammunition to keep factories open at minimum capacity. Indeed war is expensive and costs a lot of money and resources. That is why if a war is not brought to a conclusion quickly it ends up in a stalemate that can take many years to resolve. And the longer it take the more it will drag out because the resources incrementally decrease on both sides - this is called attrition. Until one side's morale finally breaks and or there is a major breakthrough causing the collapse of the opposing force where the fortunes can no longer be reversed either due to exhaustion or lack of weapons and supplies. Wars like this one is replete through out history and they always end up having to be settled on the negotiation table with a set of compromises by both sides.

Stalemates can eventually be broken but it takes a lot of commitment. Russia isn't struggling for ammunition, burning up old stock is not an indicator of Russia running low, it's the same thing as anyone rotating old food stock in their pantry so it doesn't go to waste, while simultaneously replacing it with new stock. Russia's weapons manufacturing factories are running 24/7, while the West in many cases aren't even tooled for the type of ammo Ukrainian weapons need. Russia is weighing heavily on artillery warfare to get the job done because it's a cheaper way to fight a war while simultaneously preserving their high end weaponry such as aircraft and newer equipment in case they do indeed need to face NATO on the battlefield, artillery is devastating, easy to replace in most cases and cheap to produce...!!!

The math is easy, Ukraine gets their ammunition from NATO, they cannot produce the amount that Ukraine is expending. Russia has factories running 24/7 stocking up for the massive spring offensive and will continue to add to surplus. This is driving the Russian economy to fill workers at these factories, they are have also broken ground on new factories for artillery ammunition in the past year, and production will be in full swing by summer on these new factories. Ukraine will run out of ammunition by summer or sooner, Russian is giving them targets to spend those rounds faster than they can receive them, then make them pull reserves from all over Ukraine to one central location, once they fall for the bait, look north my friend, look north. The West can easily outproduce Russia long term, but only long term. Short term, the western ammunition stocks are running low. The Bundeswehr a.e. reported to have only ammunition left for two days of fighting in case it needed to fight. Mid term the production of ammunition is already being ramped up to war scale in Russia, while it’s uncertain when such a ramp up will start in the West. The Russians attempted a fast and decisive “special military operation” at the beginning. The Ukrainians turned that into a real war, which the Russians were not prepared for. More recently, the Russians turned the war into a war of attrition, something the West are not prepared for. Small elite armies with elite equipment are what western countries are doing for decades already, these armies lack the mass for a prolonged war of attrition. And they lack the big stocks of equipment and ammunition to support the Ukraine in such a war. So now it would be time for the Ukrainians to change the nature of this conflict again, from a war of attrition into something else - because if they don’t, they are likely to lose the war of attrition.

If Ukraine gets jets, would it not depend on artillery less? Similar to how the Stuka Dive Bomber in the early stages of WWII was used as a mobile Artillery.

I dont think that the concern... Fighter jets are very expensive, a single piece and to maintain them... Little will prevent Russia from launching one of their better missiles and destroy a landing strip and hangars full of planes. Basically its a big defeat for Ukraine and would look like a massive scandal in the west if that were to happend, but instead West could lend some CIWS to start of with, protects against drones and can be used to protect an airports or other infrastructures

They need a whole new lvl of planing. Airport security, flight engineers, training and logistics. Maby that even means western tropps in Ukraine. But they are already training pilots, so i belive its on the agenda.

This isn't a Toyota corolla, that you changed the oil and tires. For example f16 needs 17 hours of maintenance per every hour flown. And it cost about 27,000 per hour to fly it. Not to mention the spare parts facility etc. Not to mention a good maintenance crew takes years to be proficient. I love how people think sending planes is as easy as driving a car off the dealership lots.

Fighter bombers would help, but wouldn't come close to answering Ukraine's artillery needs. Consider that planes can only carry a few bombs at a time before having to refuel and re-arm. Also, the Ukrainians have lost most of their jets due to anti-aircraft missiles (as have Russians); and donated F-16s and Grippens will run into the same exposure. The Ukrainians will need more ammo (from bullets and mortars to artillery and rockets) to push Putin's forces back.

That would be part of the move from area coverage to precision, however, that move can be accomplished in many ways. Accurate ground systems like HIMARs and Excalibur are already in use. However, fact is that Ukraine is still largely a Soviet army. They use mostly Soviet weapons. Those require Soviet ammo, and Ukraine's suppliers don't make that. The west has to accelerate the process towards making the Ukrainian army a western equipped army. In the middle of an ongoing war. That is not easy. Converting the army is a massive task in itself, especially since Ukraine is going to get a monstrous mash up of equipment from many sources. At least four distinct types of tanks, with subtypes of some, and who knows how many variants of AFVs and IFVs. Each distinct piece of equipment has its own needs. There is a reason why armies do not (or should not) field 12 different kinds of tanks. If doing this with land based equipment is difficult, doing it with an air force is much more so. They are hugely expensive and have an enormous logistics tail. It really is not feasible except in the long term. We should have been moving in that direction months ago. Hopefully we are now. However, even if we had we still wouldn't be close.
