I've bookmarked this KZbin video - I'll be revisiting it a year from now and taking a close look at the company results filed by the "success stories" referenced in the first section of this report - I wonder if the handful of companies mentioned really are making a big success of Brexit? Meanwhile back in the real world, it is an irony not lost on this individual that the so called hard Brexiteers are a group of ideologically driven individuals who constantly trumpet the benefits of deregulation and lower levels of govt bureaucracy as mechanisms to foster private entrepreneur driven economic growth - hence the concept of "Free Ports" as examples of such laissez-faire thinking. Of course Free Ports WERE NOT banned by the EU but they were not exactly encouraged either. Yet, here we are in a post-transition Brexit environment where businesses up and down the UK involved in EU import and export trade are bogged down by a veritable tsunami of new bureaucratic customs forms and regulation required to engage in such trade - not exactly the glowing advert for unleashing the massive potential of "Global Britain" envisaged by Johnson et al - which might explain why they are desperately spending OUR taxpayer funds sponsoring propaganda, sorry news stories, extolling the trade related benefits of Brexit?
@PadyEos

I totally agree with this. As someone living in the EU in January and February export formalities from the UK went horribly, for both personal orders and medical orders that I needed. And its worse than people in the UK realise, it creates a second customs hurdle in the destination county that relies on paperwork in the UK. It took 7 weeks for a personal package to get the proper paperwork from the UK to get it into my hands in the EU compared to 3-5 work days before. Even a medical order was delayed 3 weeks. I don't have a choice about the medical orders but I won't be ordering anything personal from the UK anymore. It currently takes 10-20x longer than from EU countries.

Well I'm in Spain and some UK exporters to Spain are not even exporting to Spain anymore because of the hassle. Also for many products coming into Spain from large UK companies that have traditionally been routed via the German hub (say via UPS) there are up to 1.5 month in delays for non-essential luxury goods and toys due to German customs having a massive backlog. Not only that, also if you are in Spain YOU DO have to PAY VAT on the Spanish side for UK imported products (I think if they are more than 20 euros in value and Spanish customs nabs you when you come to collect but they prefer that you pay upfront - and often there are admin costs added) so there is that problem BUT you also have to pay VAT on the UK side to buy the original item in the first place and I dunno if you can reclaim or how to go about reclaiming VAT - paying VAT twice is double taxation and doesn't sound right to me. All that last minute deal talk about 'free trade' in that 1000 page deal that was signed for and agreed was a load of old bullocks, it's created major problems and more costs to the consumer at the end of the day.
@Croz89
@Croz89 3 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't pay VAT twice, products for export should be sold without VAT. Problem is it can be complicated, there are often significant fees charged by couriers, and the onus is on the supplier or customer, not the government, to claim any VAT refund. Plus very small businesses are often VAT exempt, but when you import from such business overseas, there is no exemption, VAT is applicable on _all_ goods over a small value.

@@Croz89 I'm pretty sure that say for example you buy some Warhammer Hammer miniatures from UK based Element Games or Wayland Games, they charge you UK VAT on the transaction (almost sure of this), then you specify that you ship it to Spain direct via courier. I am certain that if customs in Spain examine it and see that it's from a UK retailer and there's a high value on the product (say £300) then they're going to charge you Spanish VAT (IVA) plus some admin fees. The question is how do you go about reclaiming the UK side VAT as a customer. Some Spanish guy in Belgium who ordered stuff from the UK got charged VAT twice and he managed to reclaim the UK side VAT but I dunno how he went about it, so I do know this happens.

I used to buy about €50-100 worth of miniatures, paints, and accessories every month from Reaper Miniatures' UK warehouse, but now I've stopped because of the extra delays and import fees. We'll see if it picks up again once the portal allowing them to ship stuff with taxes pre-paid goes up.

Hear that, Scotland and N. Ireland? Independence always comes with a price, and so does sunk-cost fallacy. You decide when the former is a better deal than the latter.

FYI: The pronunciation of "Mhari" is closer to "Va-ri" than "M-hari".

@@fburton8 I was listening to a podcast yesterday about a bridge in Dumbarton where dogs jump to their death. They (Americans) argued for a couple of minutes about how it can’t possible be pronounced dumb-Barton. They ended up going with dumber-ton.

Those with the shellfish will never be able to sell their live shellfish to the EU. There is that one rule which the UK also voted for while they were in the EU, that forbid import of unprocessed shellfish in the EU.
