Millions of Hindu worshippers start every day with a ritual offering of flowers. Temples dump those flowers into the Ganges, adding harmful chemicals and pesticides to a river that’s a lifeline for over 400 million people. Phool, an Indian startup, collects the discarded flowers and transforms them into handmade incense sticks.

No one gonna talk about how he just casually started a research lab to see if he could make vegan leather and styrofoam out of these flowers?!? I dont know where anyone would even think of that, but thats a great idea! There are some great minds out there.

Frankly I have always been told that flowers used in pooja should never been thrown away in dustbin with regular waste. They should always be thrown in mud where plants are growing. They should not come under your feet...that is highly disrespectful. People just prefer easy way out and throw every kind of waste together.

How about not creating this wastage everyday in the first place ? Flowers are reproductive organs of plants. Plucking them everyday means their chances of spreading and also food for insects like bees and humming birds is being taken out in huge amounts. Disrupting the entire eco system affecting the bee population and agriculture too. And turning them into incense stick is worse than letting them rot away. Now by burning them you are just adding a bit more CO2 into the atmosphere than there should be. Letting them rotting will man it just becomes fertilizers for soil and food for small worms and insects. This is a set of most selfish acts in the name of religious worship. Hurting the environment to maximum for a non existing set of gods.
@ashlybiju
@ashlybiju 3 жыл бұрын
@@observeoutofthebox7806 Not creating this waste is not practical as it's a culture and it has been the same for many years. Even If you are successful in convincing to stop using these flowers , maybe a few might withdraw .But it's not gonna make any difference. Next, the flower business is an industry and there are many who's livelihood depends upon this, so a disruption would affect those people too. The incense sticks are less toxic than the ones you get in the market as the charcoal content is low

@@observeoutofthebox7806 why people give boquet during marriages , special occassions aren't they harming the flowers? If flowers are not plucked then also it will die after few days. @sublimefermion2205
@sublimefermion2205 3 жыл бұрын
@@observeoutofthebox7806 While plucking out flowers might seem like lowering the amount of nectar available to bees and insects. It's logically wrong. Flowers are cultivated in such a large scale because there is a demand. Or else the bees and insects would have even less flower available to them. Moreover, these aren't the only flowering plants, many flowering plants are used as vegetable for other parts of that plant. TLDR: Large demand creates larger area of cultivation of flowers than naturally possible. Hence, they help sustain larger bee population.
@observeoutofthebox7806
@observeoutofthebox7806 3 жыл бұрын
@@sublimefermion2205 yeah sure. Flowers are cultivated in large swaths of lands because of demand. So that means if you buy more there will more demand ayy? Due to reducing supply of stock. So more expansion? If you stop showering a shit ton of flowers into the rivers and temples how much would the demand go down ? No need for expanding production. The goverment can simply export all the flowers. Flowers might have been great part of our lives when we used to live in hay and clay huts.. when we used to forage in the forest and lands and pick them by our hands. But now there isn't much need for them except for being capitalised into industries like selling flowers for worship, for incense sticks, for perfumes, for soaps, for cosmetics. Whose fault it is to give into this ?

U don't cause pollution during the extraction of new material because u can use materials, that cuts down CO2. Ur basically swapping materials SO it's not gonna increase CO2 levels. Plus, many religions have things that harm the environment... Like coffins. Yes coffins. I'm pretty sure coffins are made of wood. Imagine the pollution caused by deforestation, the making of the product, transport and ect.. That's a lot of pollution u know for something that's not always necessary. @@guyfawkes6428 India is the world's largest beef exporter in the world lol Same as Brazil who doesn't have any religious restrictions on beef. Besides mate, I am guessing you re a foreigner. Because here in India quite a many people eat fish and chicken and other meat and even imported beef. And the reality is those who don't eat meat are the Brahmin communities. Who are high up in their head and has the caste system. For them ordinary people are untouchables. It's a deeply conservative backwards mind. @@guyfawkes6428 so let me get this straight, your argument is that because those people eat less meat (seems more like your stance is all assumption based), that correlates to being the most environmentally friendly... Yet it's alright and dandy to turn a blind eye to the fact that it's completely okay to allow the concept of religion to be more of a priority then to simply stop wasting an absurd amount of material, in this case flowers for religious and cultural means, because culture is more important... Your argument displays the idea of how singular your train of thought goes as far as the whole concept of environmental problems and to make exceptions to any single act of pollution by any group of people is laughable. All in all hypocrisy is all around and we'll never save the environment with such thinking if we continue making outrageous exceptions all in the name of religion or what have you.

@@haylnanna5575 It is not an assumption pea brain, it's a fact. India has the largest vegetarian population per capita in the world, and the vegetarianism is based on principles of religion, you can look it up if you want. Due to this, they are responsible for far less damage to the environment than any other community, because the meat industry is by far, the greatest contributor to environmental destruction, as well as to the rise in the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere per year.So, given this fact, no foreigner is qualified to question the environmental friendliness of our way of life. Secondly, culture is dictated by people's free will, and it is pretty hateful of someone like you to suggest that hindus should possibly be prohibited from practicing their way of life, only because certain aspects of it seem to be superficially detrimental to environmental conservation. You seem to be of the belief that hindus are less worthy of having the basic human freedom to practice their way of life than followers of other ways of life, as flowers are used in many different cultural practices all over the world, yet you object to the least harmful one, out of no other reason but hatred. What about plucking flowers for unnecessary bouquets during weddings in other cultures? The flowers are thrown away afterwards. So do we ban bouquets? The spillage of tons and tons of blood on public streets during mass open goat slaughters every year during eid is about thousands of times more unhygienic and environmentally unfriendly, so do we ban eid? Any and every event whose only purpose is entertainment and enjoyment, which may have a detrimental impact on the environment must be banned by that logic. Many, many exceptions are already made, all over the world, for cultural practices, all far more outrageous than the one in question, which are so commonplace that you too, are definitely guilty of having participated in atleast one of those and polluting the environment more than the average follower of indic culture. What is outrageous is your hinduphobia disguised as environmental concern.

If I looked at an amateur business/market perspective, flower-recycled incenses might not thrive in USA and Europe as well as it does in India because of the cultural/religious differences between the countries (though it's still worth investing into as USA is a melting pot of cultures, too) but flower recycling business may do very well when the founder perfects his formula in making flower-recycled vegan leather and styrofoam. That's going to be revolutionary! It can reach every country. Sidenote: maybe create an alternative product like candles from flower wastes. They can be marketed together with incenses, too, all over the world.

A lot of ppl are commenting about the pesticides ending up in the incense sticks. In their FAQ I found out that they seem to use some kind of spray to bind the pesticides to wash them away later.

A friend of mine in Canada got married and gave these out as souvenirs. I'm so fascinated. I used to burn incense regularly but stopped because I learned most incense is charcoal based, and full of synthetic chemicals that form carcinogenic aerosols. My lungs actually felt awful after burning them and I'd have mild asthmatic like symptoms. I experienced none of that from these. It doesn't even burn into a grey ash, but brown and retains the cylindrical shape. I hope they expand to the western market. Fantastic innovation, and an inspiring individual behind it!

I'm their customer since they started 3 years ago, a small start up. They make perfect cones and agarbatti. Absolutely beautiful. Can't appreciate them enough. I keep buying and gifting these every month and especially on festivals. 100 percent recommend. Their eucalyptus, rose, jasmine and vetiver are my favourite.
