A few days ago i had to start evacuating due to wildfire. I learned alot. The fire got put out just 40 ft from my home. I Realized very quickly what is important. Disabled & living alone is very difficult in an emergency. People would pass by videotaping but not one offered to help me. That taught me alot about people too.

Hi, I treat my preparation as an “Escape and Evading Exercise” the way we did it in the Airborne. Everyone is treated as your enemy, therefore stay out of sight, sleep in area away from foot traffic and light no fires or use torches and drink lots of water. If you can, always prepare alternative routs and actually walk, hike, run or cycle these routs. If you can stash small supplies on your escape routs.Take time to practice as this will give you confidence in your abilities during the upcoming challenge. Head for the hills and the high ground and make sure you know your area inside out. There is no guarantee in any survival situation except in your own confidence and good practice. If I sound like I am preaching, its years of desert, jungle and bush experience in hunting man and beast. Stay alert and remember men smell, be careful where you eat and shit!

This is actually terrifying to think about. I think the prefix 'un' should be applied to both words in this case: uncivilized unrest, instead of civil unrest. Sounds dumb I know But I hope to God that you're wrong, but even if not, it's a valid and harrowing alarm that I think people, including myself, needed to read and keep in mind. Thanks.

I worked 7 year as a truck driver in the Los Angeles Ca area. When I would drive home I would use different routes going home to check them as a bug out route for viability. Plus I would use my work time to verify other routes. Even today I drive surface streets to make sure my old routes are still good and which ones are dead. While workin we had two massive power outage, both caused work stoppages and my return home. I knew a guy that work at the tv transmitter on mount Wilson he kept a M1 carbine behind his locker at work along with his bug out bag. His plan was to cut through the Nat.Forest to the pacific crest trail and that would get him within 2 miles of home. Mine was harder I had to cross the forest up and down. So my plan was to use car ore truck as much as I could.

I'm a retired commercial driver and I was a dispatcher for a major trucking company in SoCal... I don't care how many routes you think you'll have or where you'll drop your hotshot load when the shit goes down... *If you're in LA...San Diego and all points in between as well as any east corridors...You ain't going anywhere in a vehicle unless it's a well heeled (massive fuel tank) dirt bike!* And if you're in the bay area... *You're already dead!*

I really like the stock photos you inserted in these older videos, they make the information seem very realistic...

Kinda wish I lived in an area with a more dramatic "bug out" scenario. I live in the mountains next to a river that I stop and fish successfully every day on my way home with a garden and deer in my backyard. If I have to bug out, I can't imagine how bad the rest of the world would have to be.

Exactly. I live in a quiet retirement/vacation neighborhood near a lake. My neighbors aren't a threat but it will have to be defended from others. I'm concerned that my community will underestimate the need for security or be willing to participate. The affluent and elderly seem to think someone else will protect them. At 62 I've made a serious effort to be self sufficient and aware of current events. Everyone should be digging in and getting ready for some hard days ahead.

Recently updated my EDC bag from purse, to sling bag, to backpack. Have lots of supplies in car..but not so much on me. Now with having to carry toilet paper, tissues, hand wipes, extra masks, gloves..a light backpack makes sense. Added a travel cotton hat with chin strap small flashlight and one/two days worth of FD meal, FD fruit bacon jerky and a collapsable water jug. Sounds like a lot but doesn't add that much overall. Odds are i will eat the FD meals, bacon sooner than later and the hat I've found very useful standing in line..

It is August 24, 79 CE in Pompeii. Town's people notice smoke coming from Mt. VESUVIUS. One says "Oh, it's nothing, don't worry about it. " Another says " I am going home and staying there. " A third shouts " RUN!!!!" Now in the 21st century it seems the more things change the more they stay the same.

If you're on foot and you have to exit through a more obscure route from a city you'll probably go through areas with wire fencing. The bolt cutters will come in handy again and could cut miles off the journey. There is also the possibility of abandoned dogs in the area, it'll be later when they all mysteriously disappear. Till then they will be a potential problem especially at night. The water through this post industrial, suburban area will be pretty unsafe too so conserve what you can till you're out.

"People think that to prepare for difficulties, you just fortify yourself from the outside. You stock up your house with food, or you just try to take a more defensive position. Or in extreme cases, you act as if you were on the verge of war, and you remove yourself to some distant location far away in the country, you arm yourself, and you look at everything fearfully. But this is foolishness, for the inner preparation is more important than the outer preparation. For you do not know what you are preparing for yet. You cannot tell how things will go. And because you are ultimately here to serve humanity rather than to run away from humanity, you are really not engaging with the truth about your life if you simply try to build security for yourself. And any security you build for yourself will still be insecure in the face of the Great Waves of change. You cannot run away and hide under a rock. You are going to need others to help you. You are going to need to share your talents and your skills. You are going to need the talents and skills of others. You are going to need meaningful relationships, or you will not make it. Running away to some remote location is extremely foolish and extremely dangerous. That is why the inner preparation is essential. If you do not know how to read the signs of the world, you will not know what to do in changing circumstances. You will act out of fear or aggression, or you will trust things you should not trust, or you will give yourself over to others who will only lead you into greater danger, or give yourself over to political persuasions that in themselves are a hazard. If you cannot see and cannot know, you will not know what to do, and you will follow others who claim they know what to do, but who in most cases will lead you into greater danger." I used to live in a high-rise in an urban area. If I still lived in such a location and did not own a vehicle, I would not rely upon taxis or mass transit to get me out of the city. Instead, I would have a retro style bicycle, one with fenders over each tire. I would have the bicycle fitted with a pair of metal mesh panniers over the rear tire as well as a flat carry area on top of that rear fender. I would fill the panniers with lightweight camping gear (hammock tent, light weight rain tarp for the tent, nesting titanium mini-cookware, folding cook stove, head lamp, mini weather radio, water pouches, water filter, instant food, lightweight rain pants, folding Goal Zero solar panels for charging smart phone...) and use bungie cords to strap a mini first aid kit, tire pump and tire patch kit on back. I would wear an empty backpack fitted with Velcro-attached reflector tape (keep the pack empty to not change the center of gravity) just incase I had to abandon the bicycle and walk out with whatever gear I could carry. And I would leave as early as possible wearing a helmet with eye protection plus a smoke filtering mask and lightweight, breathable rain jacket. Yes, a motorcycle can get you out of the city a lot faster, but its noise attracts attention, it does not perform well on slick roads or debris-strewn roads and you cannot store it in your apartment or condo. And the only fuel a bicycle needs is muscle power. I would plan to stealth camp in wooded areas near roadways until I had peddled my way to a motel or a friend's home well away from the disaster area. If you plan to evacuate by bicycle, make sure you exercise often and ride that bicycle often so you are in good enough shape to travel for miles and miles. It is also good to carry about 10 extra pounds of body fat which can be your easiest food supply when peddling along distance. And yes, if mass transit is working, most urban busses and trains can carry a few bicycles. Where we live now in southern Nevada, my husband and I plan to boondock on public lands in our motorhome until it is safe to return home should we need to evacuate. We can tow our Jeep behind the motorhome and one of us can also drive our pick-up truck that we can load with additional dehydrated food and jugs of water. We keep track of the status of the three evacuation routes we have chosen and have paper maps and atlases of the areas just in case our three electronic navigation devices (Garmins) are not working. We also know the locations of the freshwater springs in our desert area, just incase. We make sure the fuel tanks of all our vehicles never get below the half-full point because we never know when we might need to leave at short notice because of a wildfire or a toxic chemical spill.

@@jodojodo6406 If you mean why dont rural people trust city folk, then a large part of it is generations of city folk treating rural people like trash and passing law after law that hurts them "for their own good" and another part is many have been raised from a young age to be independant thinkers with common sense skills while most city folk have an ingrained "im a special snowflake who deserves everything handed to me" mentality ontop of lacking even basic skills like changeing a tire. To the second "why it wont matter" comment its because most rural folk just wont take the chance on someone they dont know that could turn on them or be a resource drain. odds are 50/50 they will tell you to piss off with a single warning or just shoot first ask questions never if things are bad enough. Best thing to do is cultivate some friends among farmers and ranchers. Also learn to do at least one useful task. Even being a good cook or able to give first aid will greatly increase your odds of a rural community accepting you after you prove your skillset. Remimber even if you have friends in a rural community they may want you in but the community is going to be leeery at best until you prove useful

Bugging Out is a Last Hope situation. You should never Bug Out unless there is no other choice. Why would you leave the one place you know better than anyone else. Where you have most likely stored all of of your supplies. It is better to spend your efforts on solidifying your perimeter and defenses. Leaving is something that must happen early or before a SHTF situation. Otherwise you'll be caught up in the Chaos of everyone else attempting to leave the area. If you live in a hurricane or forest fire prone area. In might be wise to have a secondary supply cache set up beforehand. Like a family member or even a storage unit outside the effected area. In that way you can Bug Out to your secondary supply cache. Before the chaos of the unprepared clogs the highways and decimates the food supply.

PROBLEM IS - "WHEN" DO YOU "BUG OUT" ? We live in Florida - during hurricanes, the evacuation roads are GRIDLOCKED. Everyone in South Florida heads NORTH - and there are only 3 major routes, 2 of which funnel together. SEEMS TO ME that the only answer is having a "trigger event" - upon which you IMMEDIATELY leave, despite the general public being unaware of impending danger.

@Claris if you live any Demoncrat held area move away today!!!. Once the Left kicks off mass violence this Oct 2020, right before the election expect a complete hard lock down esp. in these Communist held areas, expect Military/ Police check points to stop anyone from escaping on the highways. So if you live near LAX, blocking I-10, I-8, I-6, I-40, I-70,I-5 etc could easily trap all those in California, with very little fire power from the Local Communist forces to stop anyone from getting out. You have 112 day's approx. before the election, time is running out fast if you live in a State that has gone hard Left, even places like N. Cali will not be immune from the insane Left. This goes for all big cities. Rules of 3 3 minutes of no O2 and death comes, 3 day's without clean drinkable H20 and death comes, and 3 weeks without food and death comes, these are averages of course. And if your carrying your gear on your person, don't expect to be able to back pack 100lbs of crap if you only weigh 98lbs, the rule of thumb here is 20-30% of your body weight, is what is the maximum you might be able to carry in a back pack. Personally I like bicycles, with packs and or a bike trailer equipped with light weight gear, I am a big man and carry over 200lbs of crap with me on my rig, although I do go slower than a car with a partially blown engine, it's a fair bit faster than on foot. Hope this helps. God Bless America Trump 2020

You could leave small caches of food and clothing or even a bug out bag hidden on your bug out route if it is a long journey or you had to bug out with what you had on you,of course there is a risk of someone else discovering it but the reward is worth it

Bunkering in is my preferred option as I live in a house with a garden in a village. I can make all the preparations I want; building supplies, defense and so on. If a catastrophe hits fast enough, you will not even be able to bug out in an orderly way. I do have a bug out scenario, in which I presume that I can run to family and that they will take me in. If you are lucky, they won't take you for a lunatic if you tell them you are a prepper... just running off without a place to run to will turn you into a fugitive who does not know wether he will eat or even live the next day.

In the event that one may have to bug-out on foot or by non-motorized personal transportation it can be extremely informative and wise to actually physically go over the route in order to note potential bottlenecks, hazardous areas, time required to exit congested area, and anything else that PHYSICALLY bugging out would entail such as whether you can carry, for long distances or time, what you plan to take? Will you be able to get water or food along the way? Will you have to pass through extremely dangerous areas inhabited by gangs, protesters, or roving mobs? Does your proposed route expose you to unnecessary observation by others?

The stages might occur over a period of days, like hurricanes, we get advance warnings. Sometimes over a period of a whole hour if lucky. Also the situations will dictate what to pack. If evac to a friend's or family member, or evac to the hills. Also if you board a plane they have no sense of humor for some things. A good evac plan takes all these into consideration. I am new to this and just now even thinking about all this.

IF things DON'T go 'mad max' this winter, you'll at least be in a quieter place & can look for a better spot during the calm. Summer is a good time to explore & camp out & get to know the locals.

I think so because it's almost like accepting that something catastrophic may happen. But on the positive side, at least you'll have a little something to get you through instead of panicking at the last second. It's also easy to get started. Buy a couple extra cans of food and a pack of water.... There. You've started prepping. Build on that every time you shop, keep educating yourself and you'll be glad you did. (1) Buy a map, and learn how to read it; (2) Determine which area you are CAPABLE of "bugging out" to, based upon your mode of transportation & supplies; (3) Actually GO to the area, and SEE firsthand if the area is viable (ie: can you really LIVE there, if you do "buy out"); and most importantly (4) have a "trigger event" that will cause you to LEAVE, and advise everyone in your group (family, friends, etc.) of the DEADLINE to be enforced (ie: "1 hour after the trigger event, we leave - NO EXCEPTIONS).

Look for caves, abandoned mines in your area. Google them, print the maps. You can get karstic maps, aquifer maps, easily. Read about each and every one of them. Remoted areas ( wooded) with no roads. Visit those in advance. Look for a consistent enough water resource in each area. Try to do it while carrying your B.O.B. If you select one particular place as your designated destination, prepare some fire wood in advance. Learn about the local fauna and prepare accordingly. Learn to recognize wild edibles ( not mushrooms) and go out fishing. Worst case scenario, I would eat snails. Easy to catch, easy to find even in the cold season. Check the soil. If it will permanent, I'd take into consideration planting my own food. So, in choosing such a place, I'd look for those indicators.

Okay. Bugging out is a very good way to go if you do so early on. And IF you have a destination where you will not be a stranger and the occupants do expect you. Otherwise, you may be treated as a target when you trespass. Also, cutting fences in order to make it easier on you could be the death of you, literally. Some farmers and ranchers will not be kind to those turning their livestock out or killing them for food. Your lack of preparation could be recognized as a threat to the survival of landowners, probably justifiably, given that most interlopers will be starving shortly and turning to whatever means it takes to get food and other necessities. And practical people eliminate threats to their survival. Have a good plan, even if your destination must be public land, and do not take short cuts onto fenced or marked private property.

My lake cottage in rural MS an hour S.E. from my home near crazy crime ridden Memphis, and less than a day via our mountain bikes. Walnut Lake is a PRIVATE 50 acre lake with 3 ways in, 3 ways out. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of Holly Springs National Forest. Lots of fish, squirrels, deer, turtles, ducks, etc. Spring fed with water running out of ground near shore in places. It is vey possible for the residents to defend from outsiders, and you won't want to mess with them. Stay away in a crisis if not an owner as we will organize armed security details. Each resident can be self sufficient and none of us will starve. If you have skills to offer, watch for properties to come up for sale. Small fishing cottages, and homes alike are very affordable.

Scott Dow: Bank foreclosures take months to complete after a few mortgage payments have been missed. The foreclosure process varies with each state's laws. So there is usually time for people to decide what to do next if they know they soon cannot pay the mortgage (or rent). One way of delaying foreclosure (or eviction) is to raise money for the next month's mortgage (or rent) by selling your furniture and other possessions or renting a spare bedroom to someone or selling that second vehicle. If all else fails, pay-off a vehicle and camp out of that car or truck or store a tent in the trunk. See if a family member or friend will let you car-camp or tent-camp for free in their backyard or in their garage until you can find employment and can then afford to share the rent with someone else.
