First trip to China I just decided to wander, good and bad idea. I was always lost, that is the bad part. The good part I would point on a map where I wanted to go, people helped me purchase tickets, got me in the right bus or ferry line and on to the next stop where I was lost. Chinese people were so helpful, calm and patient with me. Love you China!

I can't thank them enough, and I was touched by their kind gesture .... I hope other foreigners experience such great hospitality in China too. Let me tell you folks. When you (as foreigners) come to China, you may find sometimes people (especially with lower education level) may look like they are scared. However, the truth is they do not have any foreign language ability but they are SO~~~ concerned about it. Western people may not understand, because Chinese people seldom think in this way - "this is in my country, so you should speak Chinese rather than I'm speaking English". Instead, they show their worry and anxiety for not being able to communicate, which in your eyes may perceived as scare, but trust me many of them really wish to help indeed. Last Christmas, I went to Shanghai, and I arrived at night just in time to catch a non-maglev train, which was the last train available at that late at night. I took the train from 9pm to 2am, and the passengers were all low-income folk. The people sitting next to me were eating sunflower seeds and smoking and talking gruffly, and they looked like they could mess someone up in a fight. But at the same time, they did not harass me at all. One older gentleman went around periodically to collect trash, and said to us 'comrade, let me clear that trash for you.' Another younger gentleman got on his phone and started a video call with his wife and young son. A few seats over, people were sharing tea from a thermos. I realized that these people were going back home to visit their families after working in the city. To me, what I would stereotypically think to be a dangerous setting in some cities in the world was actually a wonderful display of compassion in China.

As someone who's traveled in China, let me temper that statement. The domestic airports are really nice. However, the behavior of the people flying on them can be really bad by Western standards. Of course, it's their country, and they determine what is normal. But if you are going to fly domestic in China, don't have high expectations for noise level and personal space. In fact, that sort of applies off of planes too. There's people honking in the streets constantly, people play music on speakers, there's a lot of yelling. Imagine New York, but ten times worse. Also, the planes are oftentimes really old and cramped still. There's way more demand for flights than planes available. A sign of how fast China is growing and how much more affordable flying is becoming. (If Trump starts a trade war and China starts taxing Boeing, it's going to take forever to fix this.)

In China, you can shoot on the street, but in places like hot springs, it's personal. You can take pictures of yourself, but you can't take pictures of others. So the waiter gives you two choices 1. can not shoot. 2. The waiter has been following you to help ensure that no one else is photographed (considering that you are a media publicity, you can help them lay advertisements, which is already a special treatment). I have had quite a few of that type of experiences in America. A little over 30 years ago, a group of us foreign students went to visit Los Angles during a summer. Even though we spoke enough English, we still managed to get lost a couple of times while visiting the downtown areas. Each time people of LA stopped by and asked us if we needed help. Thank you Poppy for sharing this with us. I am touched when I am browsing the comments section. I am glad that people from outside China are defending China by sharing their own living and traveling experience there. I hope there is more positive energy like you to help reduce people's stereotype partly built up by the media. Thanks again.

Love your video~I know, it’s ironic. I’ve lived in US for four years and UK for two year. Every time I asked locals whether they’ve thought about visiting China, they said “I’d love to, but I’m not sure if it’s a good choice for traveling safely” and they’ve never been there before. All they tell you is “I watched from news all the time......” Honestly I feel somehow pathetic because they always think they are so-called “open-minded”, but after all, all they know are coming from news, not the actual experience.......and they think they live in the “GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD” although they’ve never ever been to any other countries......some people need to face the reality, just saying

One of my college friend in the UK genuinely thought that her native country (Somalia) was ahead of time compare to China and she was stunned when I showed her photos of Shanghai. Another excellent and enjoyable video. And, yes, on a comparative basis China is clearly one of the safest countries in the world. And the reason is NOT that they don't have guns, as some people believe. That's nonsense! A criminal doesn't need a gun to commit a crime. It's 'cause it's a 'family' country, more so than many other countries - a family, community atmosphere. It's all around you if you open your eyes. Families everywhere, children and especially the elderly, communal exercising, and even in the restaurants you share tables with complete strangers (something some westerners don't like). It's in these small communal settings that civility exits...and I suspect that the woman who went out of her way to help Poppy probably practices it herself... Great job, Poppy! And your 'Where's Poppy' bit is a great gimmick! Keep it! And if you ever find 'Waldo' I hope you let us know...!

Gerrarl Nandis we do. Or at least I do. Politics at the end of the day is about life. Putting on dramas and hyping up slogans only make them sound or look like they’re doing something, so that they can claim they’ve done it, or they achieve certain further agendas. Call me prejudiced, I’m not saying that anyone who goes in front of a camera and make speeches are like that, they could be promoting something really beneficial, what I’m saying, is that if someone is doing so so much of that, then when do they really go and do actual things which do make a difference? That’s why we don’t hype up and follow those people who’s only louder but not more helpful. Which might be mistaken as we don’t care, or it’s a forbidden subject. We’re only calmer about this, because we care more about the actual “doings”. And also, some of you who don’t speak Chinese much might not even realize we do talk about it. And we don’t usually start a conversation about it with expacts or really anyone who were not super close with. Because many of the policies or things we talk about, you won’t be able to relate because they don’t concern you. So yeah, just because you don’t hear it, doesn’t mean we don’t talk about it, or were not allowed.

We did get cheated a few euros two three times in the train station, where we were not paying attention. A bit hard to guard every penny. Other times each strong man guard every ticket vending machine so you have to pay them to get ticket. We have two big sons so these guys sweared at us instead of attacking us.

As a Chinese, I so appreciate this video, because you let more people can understand my country. Let me explain why some Chinese stare you and without face language sometimes in China, because most of Chinese can't speak English fluently and well. But if you can say some simple words, they will be very nice and try to do their best to help you. Chinese are so friendly and warm. So, welcome to China and enjoy your trip.

I have traveled extensively in China visiting more than 25 cities by myself. I am not a female but I can agree China is mostly a very safe place to travel even for female. The only advice I would give to a non Chinese traveler is to make sure not to get ripped off by taxi drivers targeting foreigners. Also if you ended up being in a taxi driver who drive like a maniac, do not hesitate to tell him to slow down, stay away from the car in front of him and not to pass where you cannot see the oncoming traffic. Believe me, there are so many dangerous drivers in China. I think I almost got killed twice.

Insightout That's why, stereotypes exists in Western countries that Asians are bad drivers.

The stereotype could be fair. My personal simple impressions are 1.Koreans: the worst in a sense there are just so many poor drivers and also many short tempered ones as well. 2.Chinese: They are too reckless and aggressive and not so willing to obey the rules. 3.Japanese: They have skills and manners are good but still many drivers block passing lanes and others tailgate on highways.

I also met a nice lady who walked me to the place I wanted to go when I was traveling in Nanjing. I feel that people in Nanjing are really really friendly. By the way I’m Chinese, so I guess she did that not fully because you’re a foreigner:)
