That "elevation" allegory is way more potent than you think. I'm willing to bet that 40% of all AU content is based on someone having a cool idea and people popping the hell off with it. Ink Sans, Boneliest, Time Paradox, Underverse, Abysstale, Fellswap, Dustswap/Swapdust, Dustbelief, Clickertale, all games and concepts that had no reason to exist until someone gave them life. Dude, I could go on for literal months, and I wouldn't be finished. There's whole ass communities based off this. Fangames like Bonetale and Last Corridor cant even be considered fangames anymore; theyre just games. They have their own metas and strategies. It's incredible.

As a note, there is plenty of instance where sans messes with YOU the player directly, the lend credence that at the bare minimum he knows that there is someone extra out there. Unless Frisk can only see like a dozen meters in front of them in that Snowdin room, or the facing you and zooming your screen in while playing a symbol crash, among a few more instances is not enough. I love this video. I’ve seen so many videos and posts and all sorts of things talking about how cringe the sans craze is and how terrible the fandom is. But all i see when I pop on tumblr to see the next big Undertale AU is pure, unadulterated creativity. I love that people use sans as a blueprint to write their own stories whether that be practice or if they end up making a living off of it. 28:41 Yoooo I remember diving into the rabbit hole of these Undertale/Deltarune AUs on SoundCloud so much in my teen years so much. Despite cringing at those times looking back, they were definitely something alright. I was such an immature teenager who didn’t even know how Undertale was supposed to work. I love Undertale AUs for how many creative ideas were born out of them. There's an endless rabbit hole of AUs and I find that great. I even decided to contribute to it by making a list of the biggest AUs (I got 60) picking 2 randomly, fusing them together and making designs for the characters and imagining the lore of the fused AU. Once I'm done, I add the newly created AU to the list, and I do the same thing again. I pick to AUs randomly and fuse them. If anyone's interested, I post the results in my community feed here on KZbin. For now I've only done it once, but I'm currently brainstorming for the second AU fusion (some of them are tougher to fuse than others, and the ones I'm working on right now are on the tougher side).

RIP no dreamtale mention (or Xtale for that matter)...but i suppose it makes sense, since neither of those AUs fit in with the "what if" formula you outlined with all the others. Instead, both of those pretty much tell completely original stories, while using sans as a crutch for popularity...and it works! Theyre both extremely prevalent in the UTMV community (and both receive praises for breaking the formula to tell an honest-to-god emotional _story_ !) That's not even getting into any of the other outcode characters (ink, error, fresh) the fandom has adopted...but I digress, this comment's too long as is. I was rewatching this and I think you could have gone a bit more in depth on sans's gaster blasters, you mentioned them but they are unironically one of the coolest and most badass parts of his character imo. They can be used in so many different ways in animations and just emit this ''badass'' aura that I can only compare to jojo stands tbh. Like you see this lazy doofus fight and now only can he throw hands but he can also summon *giant dragon heads that *shoot lasers!**. It by itself skyrockets his coolness level, and when combined with his: - bone manipulation (which is extremely versatile and could win fights just by itself); - his teleporting skills (giving him complete battlefield control and prime positioning as well as a get out of jail free card to just teleport away if things get ugly); - *and* his telekinesis (which I s a game winner just by itself if assumed no limits but even if he can only use it on souls and can only throw people and not hold them in place that's still a insane about of power in that one ability). hell you could even include his Karma damage which means he would have a huge advantage against evil characters which can easily make up for his pitiful stats. And those stats and his nihilistic believes are why he isn't a complete monster (hah) while fighting, which is why killersans and other similarly unhinged sans with enough LV to survive a few hits are so insanely cracked, I think he could legit take out some heavy hitters from animes if given enough leeway on his powers.

I wrote an AU myself. Well, we are a little tired that everything comes from Sans, of blows in mine it is Chara (who now controls Frisk/ the player) who after a little too many Genocides begins to to get bored and become sadistic (especially towards Papyrus). And so, much more interesting, I describe how Sans reacts to this change of Chara. I named my AU New Genocide (yes I know, it’s technically not a genocide run) but I never made a game because I did not manage to find people to code, design and make music😭.
