Shame is the greatest hindrance to financial success. Shame is the greatest hinderance to achieveing whatever we want to achieve. Why do Nigerians, especially Nigerian youth still allow shame to cripple them in this day and age in spite of all their exposure, all their education? Is it peer pressure? Is it that they do not like money? Let's have a discussion about this.
In this video I reacted to Legit TV's "I didn't know I could build a house by selling puff-puff"

My dad was ashamed for me the first time I told him I wanted to learn a skill while I was waiting to start secondary school. I didn't wait for anyone's approval I went ahead. While in higher institution I was able to take care of my fees and that of other friends. Today I am architect and have the following skills I learnt: 1. Automobile electrician 2. Graphic design and Portrait painting 3. Paint Production 4. Wood work 5. Computer skills ( AutoCAD, chief architect, revit, twin motion, AutoCAD inventor, Computer programming & more) 6. Interior design 7. Song writer and pianist That's The ones I fell I should put up here to encourage someone. In today's world any skill can take care of your bills. When my mates were using their spare time to play around I was busy learning skills. And it also helped in keeping me away from trouble. Learning skills opened me up to understand business better even though we still learn every day. Please learn a skill today & you will be happy you did.

This Man is really an inspiration, I'm very guilty of all you said Flo, I could remember when I applied for a Visa to come to Europe, while I was waiting, my unlaws advised me to go learn Tailoring Job or Hair dressing, I rejected it by fire, I said to myself, how can someone like me who suffered in Engineering field stoop so low to learn Tailoring Job, Mbanu, they even went ahead to enquire the the necessary information from the Tailor close to us, they mention One Catton of Cabin Biscuits and 2 crates of Minerals, i simply told them that, they'll be the one to attend the Tailoring School, now I'm regretting not taking that Opportunity, I waste money sewing my African materials here in Europe. Pride and Shame remains the only fast way to Poverty. Thanks for addressing the issue Sis

lol @ one carton of cabin biscuits and 2 crates of mineral. Do they still collect those things to teach someone fashion and designing in Nigeria? 😂 O nyanu, Nne now you have to learn it on the internet by fire by force else you will continue to pay ego igwe. hahaha Lesson learned. No skill is a waste not to talk of when one learns it professionally and uses it to earn good money. I have even gone for basic plumbing training here, 10 hours I think. From time to time the NGOs here offer such training for free and if I have time, I attend them. The number of hours of training I received does not in any way make me a professional plumber but at least I can unplug a sink in my home without calling the €35/hour plumbers. With that knowledge, the plumbers in Nigeria cannot hoodwink me with plumbing jargon.

You are right, I can't remember the last time I went to the hairdresser, I can sew, I can plumb my sink and toilet, I can paint, tile my walls and flooring. Even assembling my flat-pack furniture. I always wash my car myself, polish, wax and shine the exterior. This is apart from my full-time job. I've saved a lot of money over the years. Very very happy, I love the sense of fulfilment and satisfaction I get from it.

Mummy wey sabi! 🙌 May her soul continue to rest in peace. I do not know why it is so difficult for Nigerians to understand that certificate or no certificate, posh job or no posh job, what matters is that you make a good living. And just as one can grow in his/her career, one can actually expand from any source of income, take it global if you so wish. Look at the likes of McDonald's and KFC. There's one guy I knew as a builder, now he is expanding so fast into a real estate investment company! People put themselves in a box too much!

"MENIAL JOBS". Who wants to be insulted for doing a "MENIAL JOB"? Nigerians are very fond of mocking people who do jobs classified as "MENIAL JOBS". It's so bad that they even mock those who travel abroad to drive taxis or do security, even as they beg the same diasporans for money. Another thing is that Nigerians hate paying for services. If you work for a Nigerian,they try to avoid paying and if they can't can't avoid paying they pay you a pittance. If you pay plumbers in Nigeria half the money that plumbers make it the US, I assure you that bank managers will resign to take up plumbing in Nigeria and they will go to their churches and give testimony that they got a plumbing job. We need to change our mindset in Nigeria
@FloFinance
@FloFinance 4 жыл бұрын
I do not know which part of Nigeria they are not paid because the way it works, it will be difficult to owe a worker like that. They submit their quote and you agree on the price. Before they start work, you must give them advance payment and pay the rest in timely installments such that by the time the job is done, it's just a tiny fraction of the agreed amount remaining which you pay on completion. On the other hand, the worker needs to be smart about collecting these installments even if it means stopping work when they notice that a client is intentionally delaying payments. So for me, payment is not the issue because they quote an amount they are happy with. Even if there is negotiation afterwards, they are still happy with the final amount, else they will not do the job. Those who are highly skilled can sometimes quote up to 30% more than others and still get the job because the person hiring them knows that on the long run, that one will be cheaper. Very skilled plumbers already make more money than some bankers in Nigeria but the truth remains that everyone will NOT want to be a plumber no matter how much they are paid, just like I have no desire to be a Doctor no matter how much they are paid. My only wish is that everyone should just do whatever legal work they want/have to do without shame.

Integrity _0 Due diligence _0 Finishing_0 Disappointment_100 Shame_100 I have seen a mechanical engineer looking for mechanic to fix a little fault in his car. Sometimes it's not actually shame. Lack of confidence. In the case of artisans, they no longer have the patience to finish learning the job. Something you are supposed to learn in 2 years you jump out after 6 months. Let them come here and see people going for 100hrs course to learn CLEANING.LET ME COME AND BE GOING

Like one article someone posted a link to in the comments said, they hang one door and they already think they've learnt everything. What do they know kwanu? Hours and hours of training in these jobs before one is certified. Even the equivalent of people that sell puff puff have to go for hours and hours of food handling and manipulation course. That's probably why they look down on these jobs. If there were hours of organised paid training one had to go through before they can practice, maybe they will start respecting these jobs.

Flo what an inspiration post.The problem is the entitlement mentality and the shame as you said of the dignity of honest labour.They all want to ustle, yes ustle,and the quick rich mantra.It is cringeworthy. I tell people that Nigeria is full of potential and they challenge me to come and face the music from the UK. Ha ha ha the example you gave is the one I give.Our Ladys Bakery bought her first mud from us in New Market Road Onitsha to build a hut to teach as a seamstress in the mid 1960s.By 1967 she was both the largest bakery by turnover plus the Biggest school of dress makers in the Eastern Region out of sheer hardwork and industry. Nigerians should learn that where there is muck there is dosh or gold.

That rhetoric about coming down from "the abroad" to face the music has been the dumbest excuse for decades. Dem no dey taya for that excuse. You see the videos circulating the internet now. That is the kind of "money" they will flock to make. Imagine people putting their faces on ritual killings videos but will be ashamed to do legit work. Our Lady's is from my hometown. Those who could not fathom her hardwork termed her a mammywater, that's how they ruined that woman's business.

🤣🤣🤣 Big Sis they still collect mineral and biscuits to teach one work till today ooo. Sometime in March or April this year I went to learn something and biscuits and Malt were part of the requirements to start Lol! I had to buy them ooo. On a serious note Hmmm! What more can I say. Big Sis, you said it all. The level of shame, bigmanism & pride I see in a lot of our younger ones today I just shake my head in pity for them. I personally regret and keep telling people anytime such discussions pops up that what I know today, if I had known it like 3 /4 years ago, my life would have been more better. I sent one of my relatives (a guy) some years back to go learn hair dressing, nails & co which he agreed and started initially. But after a few months he stopped. What was his reason that his friends are laughing at him that he's doing apprentice learning a woman's work. You are even going far mentioning Cotonou. Come to the east in Nigeria so many of these so called "menial" jobs are overtaken by the Hausa boys ranging from shoe maker as we call them, tailor (Obioma), fetching water for people in their homes. You can never see any our boys doing such jobs meanwhile these Hausa boys are making good cash on daily basis. What our boys prefer is to sag their trousers, put their phone charger in their pockets just in case they meat power supply anywhere they charge their phone, and with their ear piece dangling on their neck. Moving from one street to another. And then when they see you return from work or your business they will hail you "aunty, aunty anything for the boys"? It's really a pity. I just hope it will not be too late as you said when they will realise themselves.

The biggest shame is, putting a man who is trying to provide down while he is climbing up. He get these amazing positions and he is diligent. Yet There are some who don't care about diligence, all they care about status. Status to me is symbolic to showing off, then once it's gone. It's gone. The fact he has to make Puff Puff in my honest opinion, I commend him because all he wants to do is keep pushing to do some greater and better. I wish that shaming needs to stop because all it does to us is, drive our worth of self down. I know I worked jobs that I didn't like but I worked because I love to keep myself busy and it shows me that I am willing to achieve everything by God and my own doing. I pray for everyone who is doing everything to stay alive, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody and it's legit I will support them.

This is a a huge problem in Nigeria. I think a lot of people don’t know how the world works. I am still baffled at the Nigerian obsession with a person buying several cars when they have not bought land or built homes. A lot of people rent their homes but then spend the rest of their income on cars (not one car) which is why they don’t cope well with being made redundant unexpectedly at work. This also feeds into refusing to run small medium scale businesses such as dry cleaning, tailoring , building etc. I am certain that those who finally agree to work at a building site out of desperation miss the opportunity to identify a niche area in the building trade that they can develop into a profitable business due to their view about the job. This attitude is cultural and I don’t understand why someone who is unemployed would add arrogance to the mix. I agree that our parents had a lot to do with this situation but in those days there were no financial opportunities for artisans and most opportunities were in professional work . Things have changed but the youth have not caught up with the changes going on.

Your skin is glowing🤗 Pride is stopping a lot of people from doing legit jobs that they are talented in. Let me hear you out first. Its good that the boy overcame the pride and "shame" to do this puff puff business. Thank God for a supportive wife he has too. I know someone, he sews clothes shege! He sews clothes for the elites in the community because he is so good at it. I was shocked when I found out that the guy left this handwork and went abroad in search of "greener pastures" When I chatted him after his travel, he complained bitterly of not even having a roof over his head. I'm not against anyone looking for greener pasture, but not abandoning great handwork to go to obodo oyibo without even having a proper visa for him to stay there. Thanks for talking about it. Many need to listen to this. That internet begging tire me🤦‍♀️ Lolzzz😅 the joke you made about people saying "look at this one cooking on the internet" got me 😅
@FloFinance
@FloFinance 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that the tailor at least used his skill to make money first before the lure of greener pastures swept him off. If only those with tailoring etc skills know the power they have when they are good, they will be making a lot of money. There's one tailor then at UNN, an expert in ladies wears. Your fabric would be at this man's shop for at least 3 months before they even cut it not to talk of sewing. That's to show you the queue there. In the whole Nsukka, it was just him that was skilled in the job. Come and see begging with some people crying for him to make the clothes on time before the event. In his gentle voice he would tell you to exercise more patience but if you couldn't he would give you back your fabric plus any advance you paid. He insisted on sewing the clothes himself because none of his workers could do as good a job as he did. That takes us back to the same issue with youngsters not putting their mind into learning a trade. Nowadays in Nigeria, the cost of sewing a simple style is sometimes 5 times the cost of the fabric.
@AdorableKitchen
@AdorableKitchen 4 жыл бұрын
@@FloFinance exactly. I understand the type of tailor the man is, from your explanations. Hot cake tailor. The type that people will even be begging to collect their cloths first, that way, they know there is hope😅 That's the same with this person I'm talking about. He does a very neat work. He can even sew wedding gown and you would think it's ready-made from Dubai. But I guess, he wasn't proud of this talent. Everyone wants oru oyibo. Nke ana ano na office aru with coat. We need to change this mindset. Some even told me that they don't mind coming to obodo oyibo to pack shit instead of doing some menial works back home.
@FloFinance
@FloFinance 4 жыл бұрын
Everyone wants oru oyibo for real! Yes, you got it! Sometimes he refused to accept new work. If you continued begging, he would take you into the room where he lined up people's clothes in the original plastic bags they came in. He would tell you, "look at the queue, I can't accept more because I want to sleep well at night." Not only was he a great tailor, he was such a truthful man not those ones that will collect your cloth, chop your advance and be on the run whenever he sees his customers coming. This man, even if you gave him advance, he will put it in your plastic bag with your fabric so that any day you come and you are impatient, your fabric and advance are waiting for you. Shortly after I graduated, I went to school for something and saw the shop closed, I asked the bike man about him and he said the tailor passed on.

Preacher that gospel my sister, shame is the biggest disease and problem we have in Nigeria. This is exactly what I am experiencing with my own family members. Even when you are ready to sponsor them with all the start up cost, they do not want that, but will be begging you for money as if to say you're a money tree.

That one about wanting to sponsor someone and they are feeling shame eh? I do not know how it makes me feel. Anyway, I always console myself with the fact that the person showed me upfront that they do not want to do it rather than wasting my money to set it up before finding out they are not interested. How people prefer to feed from crumbs, how they prefer to be given fish than learn how to fish beats me.

You indeed heaven sent.... I was trained in Qatar foundation on Hvac and Electrical installation and maintenance. I also worked in Qatar foundation as an Hvac Technician, from 2013, I came back to Nigeria 2015. Since I came back I was ashamed of doing mini electrical and A/C jobs, but not until I dropped my pride and start doing it. People were saying, u came back from Qatar, and you are doing this and they say all manner of abusive word ? but I didn't give in to them..... Atlearst now am proud and happy with what am doing. Am a proud Electrical / Air Conditioner Technician. Call me +2348132231212

That attitude of shame by our young people to do low grade jobs is all problem from our worship of money prevalent in Nigerian culture of today. We now practice "the end justifying the means " . .instead of "the means justifying the end '

Oh my days! Thank you so much Chimere for sharing that link! You blessed me with that link. His story especially the part from when he returned to Nigeria is spot on. I have been working with Nigerian artisans for more than 10 years and I can attest to all he said. Or should I say all he said confirmed what I said in this video. We have exactly the same experiences. If you know how their poor finishing peeves me eh! And they usually wave it off like it's nothing. They often tell me "Madam you have plumb in your eyes" because all I need to do is look at something and tell them it's not straight they will be arguing that it is straight. I would tell them to bring the spirit level and we would all see it's not straight. Kudos to the young man. I would say his being around Europe before coming full circle back to Nigeria is for a reason. I wish they included his contact in the story. I would like to know how he is doing with his training school because we really need that in Nigeria. Lol @ they fix one door and start claiming professionals. So true!

He was doing extremely very well - even had a professional website to go with, though it doesn't seem to be up at the moment. But he's on LinkedIn. The company name: Ansko Building Services LTD.
