Super interesting interview -- one thing I want to highlight is that Eli had to pay thousands of dollars in fees in order to get access to journals when she was first making her proposal. This is obviously a barrier to entry for many, many students and may be a solvable problem.

Yes! I know a bunch of friends who use certain websites to get access to journal papers as students. Sometimes journals will charge $50 just to unlock a single paper

This is an amazing video! I love the interviews! I was wondering if someone wants to do research in a lab, just like Eli did, and they cold email professors with their idea, and a professor welcomes them, how would they do research at the lab independently and work on their idea if they do not know how to use the lab tools and carry out a lab-based research experiment?

This is a GREAT question. As Eli mentioned in the interview, learning research skills in a school is not always possible. Oftentimes, you will learn these skills on your own... learning by "doing" if that makes sense. For my research in high school, I was able to self-learn machine learning by reading documentation, watching Stanford undergrad and graduate-level classes videos, and guides online. For wet lab type of work where you might need to learn how to use equipment, oftentimes, a professor will have a graduate student (PhD student for instance) help teach you the basics and familiarize yourself with the wet lab. I've heard that practice makes perfect! Learning the different techniques and procedures may be a matter of just "doing them." If you can spend a month learning the procedures, obtaining equipment, and planning before starting the project idea, that would be ideal! Consider asking your question in our Skool community (skool.com/qurios) - we have a ton of other high schoolers who might be in a similar situation and can help out!

This interview was extremely beneficial! I am also a student interested in natural biodegradation of plastics and enzymatic action on complex polymers. Is it possible to know where I can find Eli's paper? Since I am too, hoping to write a paper on a similar topic. Thanks!

Awesome video!! I also have a question. How do you get to ISEF living in a European country? I know there are science fairs here but I can’t find them online or I don’t know how to participate. It seems like so many high schools in the U.S do them, while it’s not really a thing here in Belgium/The Netherlands.

how are you supposed to know this as a high schooler, i genuinely want to know, i'm a senior and there is no conceivable way for me to be aware of things like this, there is so much information out in the world that it's mind numbing to think of what to put my focus on, especially something so niche and complex, I'm already a senior so I'm extremely depressed and feel like it's too late for me to have any meaning in life

Honestly, you had to start early. I started watching videos and starting my research ideas in middle school. If you are a senior, you wasted your time on basic extracurriculars. I think just prepare yourself for the rejections…

Do you know of any way to do research in physics as a high schooler? I’m trying to get started and I don’t really know how.
