This is my first video blog on the seafarer's way of life featuring on how we, seafarers, produce fresh water on board and what are its applications. There may be variations on the content of the video depending on a ship's manufacturer and owner but the machinery featured is the most common type.
I hope you will learn something from this video and if you have concerns, just leave it on the comment section. Thank you for watching! See you on the next one!

To avoid the possibility of typhus or other water-born disease when sailing close offshore occasionally we were told to shut down the evaporators until we reached open sea again.

The 2nd. Eng. told me to set away the G.S.pump to the double bottom tanks which is traditionally used as an absolute reserve for fresh water. I said, we can't pump salt water into the double bottoms! He answered, "You nitwit, we are at the summit of the Panama Canal, it's all pure mountain water!" Ah-ha.

@@SeanLentze The "Texaco Greenwich" our steam-turbined 57.000 dwt tanker stopped in the Indian Ocean one day with the intention of cleaning the Main Condenser. We shut both sea valves, drained the condenser and opened the large manhole cover. Am Indian crewman climbed in. Seconds later he shot out vertically, very frightened. I had never seen a white Gujarati before. A large electric snake had been drawn in. We slammed the manhole cover shut, reversed the procedure and steamed away. Next day the electric snake was gone and the crew could clean our tubes in peace. Full Away with Full Vacuum! Turbines are so quiet and never vibrate.....you diesel people would be totally jealous! The disadvantage: Full Watches 8-12, 12-4, 4-8. No free week-ends!

Nice video again! 👍Fun to watch starting up this Atlas type flash evaporator. What I always disliked about them: being the duty engineer, jumping out of your bunk in the middle of the night to accept the “salinity high” alarm due to a sudden change in the sea water temperature, and re-adjusting the feed until the salinity was satisfactory again. The principle however, of boiling seawater at about 40 degr C I always found interesting. On the jacket water by-pass valve I saw red and white sectors. Probably to avoid closing it too much? And then causing jacket cooling water flow problems in the M.E.
@SeanLentze
@SeanLentze 3 жыл бұрын
Those marks on the bypass valve is how much the bypass valve should be open when the ME is in full speed. But if you know the principle, you can easily play with the fresh water generator haha

As a ship, we're keeping our emissions to a minimum level but still maintaining the efficiency of our engines. As an industry, there are regulations in place that control unwanted emissions from all ships i.e. the introduction of scrubber systems to decrease the CO and SO2 emissions. Thank you for your support!

sir pwedi pasagot The sounding of the freshwater tank would reveal the _________ of fresh water and the amount of freshwater generated on board Most ship also have a sounding board positioned either on the _________ or in the alleyway next to the ship's office on which daily soundings are written ?
@SeanLentze
@SeanLentze 4 жыл бұрын
The answers to the blanks are dependent on the ship that you've boarded, especially the 2nd blank. For the first blank, I think 'level' would be the most appropriate answer. For the 2nd blank, on my previous ship, a sounding board was positioned inside the engine control room and inside the ship's office and we always record the daily freshwater soundings in the ER logbook.

Does your fresh water generator ever use uv light or chlorine to kill more bacteria?
@SeanLentze
@SeanLentze 2 жыл бұрын
In the freshwater generator itself, I've never experienced any UV/chlorine attachments. We use UV lamps and mineralizers for freshwater consumed by the galley and for drinking purposes.

@SeanLentze
@SeanLentze 3 жыл бұрын
The common problem in the FWG is the high salinity if the freshwater produced, it is normally caused by insufficient vacuum and/or inefficient heat exchange in the evaporator.
