The ejector pump sends flow to the ejector and due to its design it creates a venturi effect which causes a suction in the shell.. This suction creates a vacuum

Well this is a class A vessel from Korea I don't think this sasakura is a cheap variant.. Now I'm in an older vessel and I am working with alfa laval desalt freshwater generators which seem to be common.

Thank you dude, and to answer your question FW tanks vary in size depending on the vessel, the tanks I've been in without production will last usually 13 to 20 days (more if rationed) however usually these fresh water generators are running to keep these tanks full. And finally these fresh water generators are usually only placed on when navigating or anchored away from Port.. In dirty waters one should avoid using this equipment.

@@ShrimptoShark Thanks for your response. Does the FWG start automatically when the water in the FWT reaches a particular level or is it a manual process ? Also, does your ship have redundancies or a single FWG ? I have noticed some ships having a mineralizer in addition to a FWG.

I can't speak for all vessels but the ones I've been on the starting process is all manual, first make vaccum and cooling, then allow heating medium in and monitor parameters, then extract and monitor destilled water. I have been however on Ships with 2 fresh water generators but in this video there was only 1 in the vessel. All ships should have a way to make drinking water from destilled water to use in the galley (kitchen) however I'm only sharing from my limited experience on Ships.

Hello my friend, depending on your FWG (there are many models) this one is Sasakura and works with -0.7 to -0.8 bar vaccum causing water to evaporate at below 80 degrees. This vacuum is altered however by deposits or clogs that are formed either on the bottom of the shell or the secondary pipe that goes to the ejector after the condenser as you could see in the video. Some problems with vacuum are usually that it's not being generated or it can be adjusted finely by a small vacuum control valve.

@@ShrimptoShark my last contract I adjusted vacuum -0.95, temp in chamber 50 C, jacket inlet around 88 out 76, sea water 30-32, feed water rate 6.2 c.m./h it did not work if vacuum is less same as temperature rises too high (over 60) . production was around 20 cubic meters.

(however now that I think of it more vacuum could allow faster phase change of seawater which absorbs more heat when changing the from liquid to vapor thus lowering the temperature of the shell, not very sure though.. My main action would usually be to open the bypass)

Not all FWG are the same dude.. The ones I have been Onboard have not used electrodes.. Only electric component is the salinometer sensor which messures the salinty of the distalate water

Colder water requires more energy to evaporate, therefore it may be necessary reduce the amount sent to the evaporator so that the heat received is enough to produce steam. However in artic weather there is more problems! Unfortunately(or maybe fortunately) the area I was in was Europe - not too cold 😁

Aye you are somewhat correct, the if there is a bigger temperature difference between the condenser inlet and outlet (seawater) then there will be more condensate(distillate) production. However the amount of energy required to increase the temperature of the Evaporator shell is higher because you need to heat the seawater more. If you lower the feed rate you can achieve this with main engine cooling water (usually 80 degrees) if you keep putting more feed water (to increase distillate production) you risk cooling down the engine causing slow down. Some vessels have an optional Steam line to bypass this problem which would in that case be like you say slowly raising temperature and then increasing distillate production.
