What happens when the 99 year lease comes to an end? Do the descendants inherit nothing?

Depends if the state renews the lease. There would be a lot of places where the state will end the lease and individuals entitled to nothing.

@@unity2702 So Singapore has the highest proportion of home ownership of assets which will be worth noting. A bit like tenants!

@@jauneetbrun The HDB offers 2 to 3 other comparable homes in other locations. If the owner refuses, they're given an amount to buy a flat on the resale market. You may Google HDB En Bloc. There's also LBS, but I think that's for very short leases as I haven't seen anyone do that here. Source: I've lived in Singapore and I work in Singapore.

I had relative who stayed in apartment 50 or so years, they received notice their apartments will be redevelopment and were offered option new apartment in various new developments at a discount price.
