come on, for the vast majority of his reign he had the #1 budget in England. He had most domestic success during an era where England was absolutely terrible in Europe and at best the 4th best league. The best team before that (Liverpool) was in shambles. Soon as Arsenal then Chelsea got their act together he won only 1 BPL in 5 years. That first period is comparable to Lyon in the 2000s or Bayern last decade. On top of that he was blessed with a crop of young talent that hasnt been rivaled since in the English game and wasnt replicated by himself either. His biggest achievement is actually the latter part of his career between 2007-2013. These 5 titles were won when the BPL was the #1 (2007 - 2008) and #2 (2009-2013) league in Europe, and he combined it with European success. However one shouldnt forget that United was absolutely destroyed by Barça twice. Ferguson was a great manager but to be in the conversation with the likes of Pep or Carlo he needed more European success.

Tactically speaking, Ferguson always build partnership of 2 players or more on the field. You may see it but rarely understand it. Beckham - Gary Neville are a right side overlap combination. Its Gary job to make sure Beckham always have room for crosses. Scholes-Carrick also a solid partnership example. Carrick is the one who protects Scholes so he can rule the game freely. Cole and Yorke is telepathic duo. Scholes and Keane combo is unbeaten against any 4-4-2. When I coached the boys here in Odense some 30 years ago I didn´t have any tactics, nothing preset, no defined approach. Instead I took a look at each and every single player, tried to assess their strengths, their favored style of play and made my "tactical approach" based on what I had to work with, that includes those I deemed to be reserves. I was only there for one season due to personal reasons, had to move. In that season I employed a 3-6-1 which won us the league. Too many managers out there wanting a certain style play which doesn´t suit their current squad at all. But I know, coaching juniors isn´t exactly the same as a top flight challenge.

Ferguson is by far the greatest manager in football history, only really Clough can compare to what he's done, but I really dislike the myths outright lies about the team he took over when he was at United. United under Ron Atkinson had a team that was expected to at least challenge for the league title, in 85/86 they had shit the bed and the season after had lost 6 of the opening 8 with one win. That team was full of world-class talent, Paul McGrath and Bryan Robson are two of the greatest players ever to play in English football to start with Gordon Strachan not being far behind and being pivotal in the 91/92 Leeds league winning team in his mid-30s. United were underachievers, but they weren't some down an out team by any stretch, and it should be noted how much time Ferguson got with a team that was expected to at least challenge for the title under Ron before things started to take shape. This is also without mentioning just how much money United could spend relative to a lot of clubs at the time.

I liked his man to man coaching and his authority over the squad as a manager. But his dominance in premier league didn't do anything much for english football. There wasn't much competition for him and United. Liverpool wasn't that consistent in league. Arsenal was the only competitive club and after 2004 Chelsea came into scene. But I always felt ever since klopp and pep came to premier league they raised the quality of football in English more manager with good tactical knowledge started to take over as English club coaches.
