How social media breathes life into the Irish language | Teresa Lynn | TEDxFulbrightDublin

In this talk, Dr. Teresa Lynn discusses the use of the Irish language on Twitter and the importance of social media for minority languages.
Dr. Teresa Lynn is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the ADAPT Centre, Dublin City University. She completed her PhD through a cotutelle agreement between Dublin City University (Ireland) and Macquarie University Sydney (Australia), investigating parsing of the Irish language. She built the first syntactically-annotated corpus (treebank) for Irish and with that, trained the first statistical computational parsing models for Irish that can identify the syntax of Irish sentences. Teresa was a Fulbright-Enterprise Ireland Awardee in 2014-2015 and spent time in St Louis University, Missouri working with Professor Kevin Scannell on the automated analysis of Irish tweets.

I am learning on duolingo how to speak Irish. I'm at the beginning. I still get mixed up with different verbs because they are at the beginning of the sentence. I am looking for a native speaker that can help me translate and understand the connections and concepts of the language because it is very deep. I'm learning it to better understand my roots.

I was born in the US but i am of strong Irish heritage. I've dicided to learn Gaelige to get closer to my roots, which i am very interested in from a spiritual stance as I am a Pagan. I hope one day I can visit Ireland and hold conversation with many native speakers, to get a real feel for such a beautiful language. Im sure there are so many sayings that a student wouldn't learn in a classroom setting, that are half of the languages charm. After learning about its endangerment i have been even more inspired to learn this language. My family assimilated here but forgot who they are.

I hope you get to know the way God worked through the life of St. Patrick. The history of the Trinitarian God in Ireland is powerful. One would have to purposefully pretend it did nothing in Ireland not to find the Christian Triune God of St. Patrick, St. Brigid, St. Declan and St. Brendan of Ireland.

@@gofishglobal7919 The concept of triple-God(s) in Irish is actually incredibly old, dating far back into ancient Pagan times. Most gods were seen to have three forms, which was an important number to the Pagans of Ireland (who predate Jesus and Moses by millenia).

as an adoptee who got over 90% Irish, i feel like i would like to reconnect to the Irish language. But somehow i feel like an imposter as i was raised in a completely BRITISH way and hearing my grandmother say that so and so had some Irish blood and what a shame that was. So even tho i didn't know my heritage, i learned from my British grandmother that somehow being Irish wasn't a good thing. I didn't grow up there or feel particulary Irish and yet i have so many irish qualities that must have been inherited. Thankfully my adoptive parent whose roots were from Yorkshire, absolutely LOVED the irish accent and in particular the music. He'd get very emotional. I just wish i had known then who i truly was.. My dad is now gone and i find myself wishing to learn my ancestors language.

Remember the TECHNOLOGICAL SHOCK of adapting the spelling system of Irish language to conform to the limits of the manual typewriter. I was trying to discuss song lyrics with an Innis Oirr-born farmer and he could not read the modern spelling of my lyrics. I wonder about the impact of this technology-driven institutional contortion of the Irish language. How deep is the division between native speakers and scholastic standardized speakers? What new divisions are evolving between the Irish of a cherished heritage and fast-paced and creative interpretations, even spellings, emerging from use of social media? As an early learner, I feel in awe of colorful and poetic idioms as much as intimidated by my own lack of cultural context and sub-text. It is difficult enough to first translate Irish words to English words, then decipher the intended meaning. It is an entirely different and possibly impossible thing to think in English words and guess the appropriate imagery and idioms and then translate to Irish words with cultural and emotional fluency.

A few badly typed words on Twitter is really meaningless for assessing the health/vibrancy of a language. However online is a great way to connect with other learners if the goal is to work on improving together and using the language. Facebook is ok for it, as are learners forums. Discord is probably the best.
