Drawing on her personal path from indifferent citizen to passionate campaigner, Victoria Bonney implores us to examine the ways citizens and elected officials alike are using social media to change democracy - for the better. From the swift engagement of hashtags to the transparency of tweeting policy-at-play in unfolding situations, social media is changing the way we see our representatives - and the way they see us. After volunteering for Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign, Victoria Bonney was inspired to be a voice for causes and political candidates that she believed in. During her 12-year career, she has served as a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood, the New Hampshire Democratic Party, the Massachusetts Speaker of the House, and the United States Department of Health and Human Services during implementation of the Affordable Care Act. With expertise in digital storytelling and online engagement, Victoria currently serves as Communications Director for Maine’s First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree. She is a 2006 graduate of Endicott College. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I agree that social media does help politicians be more relatable. But social media also helps them alter the way we see things. We only see what they want us to see. Just like filters and certain angles that make you look better in a picture. There is no way to know what you are seeing or hearing on social media is actually "real"

Yep, that is EXACTLY what they want.....confusion.....a population that longer knows what is real. If you can no longer keep lying to people, you try to confuse them.

But it starts with cops. Which is the first ambassador the government has with the people. And know the cops have no privacy. With a virus like social media just like sneak Venom it takes control of the whole body. Government should have been trying to control big social media from the beginning but now it’s to late!

and if trump wins it’ll mean online media companies and the internet in general have more influence than the government for the first time in American history.

This is no different than the filter traditional media puts on a story as well. Only difference through the lens of social media is that the politician has the control of what is seen, instead of it being controlled by a 3rd party traditional media outlet.

Great point. I was an opioid addict as a teen, saw that as a good 'in' to being a psychologist, then decided to change to biomedical major. During the pandemic I've started to keep up with news and worry about "politics." People say it's a bad thing, but I say I deserve a future. My also-23-yo cousin died this year from Lyme bc she loved hiking. I'm getting pissed about our future, and that of all life on Earth, being robbed by the greedy fossil fuel oligarchs.

Her examples of politicians using social media were Stacey Abrams and Beto O'Rourke. Both of which lost by fairly wide margins. But sure she's on to something...

Yeah, that's all very good. No doubt. But why in the world is she so hung up on Mount Rushmore? Does she actually truly have a problem with Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, and Roosevelt? Those guys not only deserve to be enshrined in our history but Jefferson and Lincoln deserve to be enshrined not only in the USA, they need mountains in Europe as well!
