I am 68 and it saddens me to see young people being exposed to so much negativity about aging and appearance. We were youth obsessed when I was young and it was bad enough but it was nothing compared to today. Aging is a privilege denied to many and I truly am grateful to be where I am, even if I can’t do all of the things I used to. I truly believe it is important to live in the now and not obsess about either the past or the future. (Easier said than done) I too look to people older than me as examples of aging well and use them as role models. These are mostly people I know personally, not celebrities, who have a joy for life and great senses of humor.

When I was growing up I remember a bunch of women around me clearly between the ages of 30-50 and always claiming they're 25 on every birthday 🙄. Like I needed to see and know what to expect at different ages and stages. Then in my early 20s in undergrad, I had a boss that that was in her early 40s was honest about it, looked fantastic and was living life on her own terms-getting married without having kids, traveling, buying a home, having gotten multiple degrees and doing great in her career. When I say "I'm so old" I mean on the inside. My dad just turned 70 and he's always taken the mick out of me for my love of old music. I like old people hobbies, old fashioned interior decor styles, retro fashion. My mum has always said I'm an old soul reincarnated. I'm just waiting for my body to catch up. It does help my self esteem that I have a connective tissue disorder that means I look really young for my age. People have mistaken me for my stepdaughter's sister and I'm respectably old enough to be her mother with us having a 20 year age difference. I'm nearly 40 now and healthier than I've ever been. I went through some awful medical stuff, physical and mental, in my early twenties so I'm super proud I've made it this far. I'm hoping to live long enough to become an inconvenience to my pension provider.

It’s happening earlier and earlier. I’m 26 and I get so much content about how your body falls apart the moment you’re 25. Younger people are also shocked to find out I’m 26 because I look “ so young” as if it’d be weird for a literal 20 something to look youthful. Maybe I’m not remembering well but this obsession with youth wasn’t as bad even 5 -6 years ago. Kids have so much age anxiety these days. I have older cousins who were in their 20s and 30s when I was a teen and I don’t remember thinking they were old at all. I saw them as cool young grown ups! I understood that 20 and 30 somethings were still young and that they were different from my parents who were solidly middle aged.

Same age and noticed the exact same thing. I’ve seen so much “your old at 25” it probably really would’ve messed with me if I was younger. It still kinda does to be honest. When I was 12-17 no one said anything like that online.. or even really seemed to care for that matter. It’s weird man. Its like things just go backwards nowadays.

It made me realised that not only am I young (I had twenty years on her) but she's also has a lot of life ahead of her. I always felt massive pressure in my twenties to do all the things - climb the corporate ladder, travel, make life long friendships, have a beautiful home, get a husband, have kids etc that I felt like by 30 i would be running out of time to make these moves. Now, I've realised that so many good things are ahead of me and my thirties have definitely been my favourite decade.

Such an important topic and thank you for your research and wonderful presentation pushing back on our youth obsessed culture. The only Birthday that ever gave me pause was 50...and that was partly my empty next transition and also the realization that I likely had more years behind me than ahead...but I got over it quickly and one of my FAV Birthdays ever was 60...I had just cut off the last of the hair dye and was LOVING my silver sparkles, AND I started a youtube channel at age 60 so was completely inspired by this new adventure. I'm 63 and feel more comfortable in my own skin than ever, AND I'm excited about the (hopefully) years ahead. It really makes me sad when I hear young gals in their 30s (and even their twenties!) genuinely afraid of aging. I really don't remember giving getting older a second thought, I was much too busy raising my daughter, getting my career going and having fun. I did start taking better care of my skin in my 40s, although not out of fear, and seriously DO wish I had started earlier, but not in an obsessed way...just basic self care like SPF for instance. Unfortunately i have used the words anti aging in video titles but I am consciously trying to make the switch to well aging, pro aging, healthy aging and better not younger. Although I enjoy creators of all ages, I 100% agree on the importance of intentionally curating your social media feed to include inspiring older people. Exposure to vibrant, healthy, older women (and men) can really change our perspective of what is beautiful. I follow several both on youtube and insta that I highly recommend: Since I am in my 60s...that means ladies in their 60s, 70s and beyond. YT...ladies in their 60s Little Poet, MaryEllen after 60, The Hooded Lid, and of course Angie Hot and Flashy (and many more) ladies in their 70s and 80s: Crushing Their 80s, Rxstarmom, Sandra Hart...And so many on insta as well...just search grey hair, mature women..and you will find tons of older, inspiring women rocking their wisdom years. Anyway...thank you thank you thank you for this video. ❤

To be fair... we were youth obsessed before social media. It definitely doesn't help, though. When I was 16 (2000), I decided I would stop smiling so much to avoid wrinkles (that decision didn't last long). I can only imagine what it would have been like if TikTok had been around then.

This is actually so sad to stop smiling just for the sake of not getting wrinkles. I also thought about that because I play a lot with my facial expressions to show emotions, I feared getting wrinkles at a young age. However, I couldn't bring myself to have a more "emotionless" face, smiling is just something that I do automatically and I'm no longer mad about that. I'm now 23 and have some small smile lines around my eyes which I don't mind at all. Quite the contrary, I think they are beautiful on me an on other people as they radiate positiviy and happiness. Glad you didn't stick to not smiling 😄

At 39 I’ve found that my body goes through various stages of worsened and improved health, and that it has a lot to do with things like my mental health/stress load, diet and exercise regimen, etc. it’s not that our bodies are necessarily falling apart, it’s that our youth doesn’t save us as much as it previously did in our twenties if we abuse our bodies. I absolutely FREAKING HATE filters. I hate them. People don’t look like the filtered pics they post IRL. All it tells me when I see a friends heavily filtered pic is that they are insecure. It breaks my heart because I think they’re beautiful. I am not afraid of wrinkles or gray hair, but I do want luminous skin with those wrinkles, and healthy looking grey hair. So while I’m not interested in injectables, hair colouring or plastic surgery, I do have an at-home regimen to help my hair and skin look their best.

I'm 62 and I stay off of Tik-Tok and intend to keep it that way. But ageism is a very real thing. Ultimately, I really embrace my face and body at my age. They've brought me this far and are going to keep me going. Doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks anymore. I used to worry so much. I was objectively beautiful and didn't actually get to enjoy it because I was often paranoid about not being beautiful enough and I'm glad I'm over it. Still doing well for my age but actually have a better relationship with my body now than I did when I was in my twenties and thirties. I'm more loving to myself and I know myself better and understand who I am and what I come from and when I was in my twenties and thirties I was still completely clueless about those things. In fact, most people in their 20s and 30s not to even mention earlier than that are still pretty clueless about who they are and what they come from. To truly grow you have to learn to reflect on all the circumstances of your life and the people and glean your lessons and accept that the only constant is change. Once you make friends with that you can accept that aging is a part of our life and embrace it because it's good and there's only one alternative. All that said, we do need tax incentives for businesses to hire employees over age 50 because ageism in the workplace sucks big-time and should be incentivized out. I plan to work until I'm 67 and I have a retirement plan for how to generate sufficient cash flow when I quit working. And a lot of young people better realize that they're going to have to work until they're age 70 so they better come to terms with what it is in life to grow older and have some damn respect! LOL! It takes hutzpah to hang in there baby!🎉

I'm glad you're talking about this! I'm a young millennial (late 20s), but even when I was like 16, I didn't rly consider a person's 30s to be old, but I didn't not? I think people under the age of about 24-25 (and especially minors, for obvious reasons) often haven't been friends with anyone outside their own age group, so they're going to fall into this trap, and then social media propagates the issue and just pours a bunch of fuel all over it... And this mentality also ruins everyone's life. Teens are having crises over turning 20, 20-somethings are having crises over turning 25, late 20-somethings panic over turning 30, 30-somethings feel miserable because people online dog-pile them to avoid their own existential fears (while also panicking about turning 35-40), like... when do any of us get to just enjoy the decade we're living without worrying about this collectively-imposed ticking clock that society has placed above our heads? Side note, developmental psychologists do consider your 30s to still be a young adult, typically. I know that shouldn't even be the point, though, since you don't need to be a young adult in order to matter and to live what I've heard are often the most incredible parts of your life (plus it's honestly really sus how many social norms fetishize youth, like... yikes, maybe we shouldn't do that for a LOT of reasons). But you nailed it when you described 30-somethings as feeling pre-emptively old. 30s is a young adult still, you haven't even generally reached the halfway mark of an average lifespan lol

I don't like makeup, never did but I won't lie that it doesn't make my face look more polished, youthful and put together. I've never cared about my appearance too much, but once I was called an ''old lady'' by some kids on the street, it really shook me how others percieve me. As someone who will be 40 this year and widowed for nearly a decade, I am unbelievably grateful for aging! Most of my now friends are in their late 70's (older than my parents) and I've learned that they are just getting started to truly LIVE their lives. They have more friends, and are way more physically and mentally strong than myself. The youth obsession is so terrible because it focuses solely on outward appearances. Do I want to look 'good' as I age-yes. But what I find the most attractive about any human is their wisdom. Let's put value on that. What have you learned in this precious life? How are your relationships? How much do you know about yourself? Wisdom is sexy. I also don't have any social media accounts anymore (creepy dudes following a 30 something widow isn't my jam) and I know how unrealistic EVERYThINg on social was back in the 20teens, let alone what it looks like today. My advice to the youth: you're not old until you've given up on learning, aging is a privilege, and the only thing your guaranteed in life is that you will one day die. That's it. I'm a 36-year-old first-time mom and I always heard messages about how much harder being a mom is in your 30s because you are so much older, weaker, tireder, etc. In reality, I feel fantastic! I dealt with insomnia throughout my 20s and early 30s, so I don't feel especially sleep deprived. I'm used to it! And I'm in fantastic shape (not the case in my 20s), so carrying my 22-lb baby everywhere with me is a piece of cake. Thank you for your positive take on aging, it's refreshing!

You become what you think and what you surround yourself with. If you think you are old, you are. If you believe you are vibrant, valuable, successful you will be. I’m living my best life at 55. I am 34 as well, have also been struggling with the fear of aging, and I love what you said in the intro about connecting to other women from all walks of life. This has been crucial for me, too, and I am so grateful to be working in a niche creative industry that allows me to have lots of these connections and networking stuff with the aforementioned women. I now personally know inspiring women in their 70s that are creative, happily married, travel the world by boat, and write books. Or women who did a completely new start (career-wise or in their personal lives) in their mid-forties. Or even women in their nineties who are still so mentally active, interested in a ton of things, and are a real well of knowledge and wisdom. Life is not over at 25 even if social media (and traditional media) wants us to believe that.

Benefit of having neutral-at-best body image my whole life: aging isn't bothering me at all 🤣 I mean, when I hit 30 my knees and shoulders got a little rebellious and demand a lot of attention after any physical activity, and some laugh lines developed on my face, but I also look younger than my parents did at this age because I don't smoke and barely drink. Plus, my mom died when she was 54 after being sick in a way that aged her super fast, so I have a pretty extreme scale of what aging looks and feels like.

She has a really interesting perspective and has been able to positively influence younger women and make them less fearful of getting older. I'm almost 52, GenX, and apart from the peri-menopausal symptoms (ladies, start learning about it from age 40 - trust me) and general aches and pains, I am way more together now than I was in my 20s and 30s.

I appreciate this video. I am heading to my mid-40's and my 40's have been much better than my 20'sand 30's, when I cared way too much about what other people thought of me. I recently completed my bachelor's degree in education and have way more confidence than I did in my younger years. I have embraced my graying hair (my mother quit coloring her hair in her early 40's when she became a grandmother and my 72 year old mil still tries to look younger by dying her hair unnatural looking colors). While I am not in the best physical shape of my life, I do plan on working on that in the very near future. I do surround myself with real people and influencers who help me to feel better about myself and encourage me to be who I am without having to fake it. I am mentally more stable and not nearly as anxious as I was when I was younger. I am proud of my recent accomplishments and can't wait to see where the future takes me.

Highly recommend the show/movie “tick, tick… BOOM!” (especially the song “30/90”) which addresses this from an artist/career perspective It’s about Jonathan Larson (best known for writing Rent) in the days leading up to his 30th birthday and a reading of a show he’s been working on for years - the ticking clock throughout representing how he feels he’s running out of time to succeed as an artist (and the great tragic irony being that he did succeed young with Rent but didn’t live to see its success because he died before opening at 35 years old)

I agree that constantly being surrounded by people 'joking' about being old, falling apart, being boring, etc. is in and of itself depressing. I don't feel that way at all, and think that it's an unhealthy mindset to take. A part of me thinks it's a way to let oneself off the hook- "Oh, I'm too old to make that career change" or "Oh, my body is falling apart, no sense trying a new activity/learning a new sport/taking up dancing like I always wanted" or "Well, it's too late for me to learn a language/write a book/travel to x,y,z". It sets the bar really low so you can tell yourself that some external factor (age) has made the decision for you. Then you don't have to take the risk or push yourself, or, most uncomfortably, confront how you might be sabotaging yourself.

I'm turning 30 today, and I am so excited for the decade to come! I joke that I am "old" because I like to go to bed at 9:30pm, but the physical issues I had began when I was 20 and aren't associated with age. I also feel very young and like I have my whole life ahead of me. But I mostly feel my age - I spend my 20s learning a lot about myself and the world, and I am now capable and able to tackle any of life's curveballs. So now I am young but also properly an adult, and I think my 30s will be my best decade yet!

I’ve never been a frequent partier but l’d like to have some guilt free fun. I’ve been “noticing” lines in my face. I just feel like there’s not much for me to enjoy and my fun years are behind me.

I'm really sorry you're experiencing that. Some of this is hard to avoid, but if you can, try using this as an opportunity to seek out new spaces and new crowds. You can still have fun but with people who aren't so youth-obsessed, and you can find new parts of yourself. You're not old, you're just barely to an age where you get to have some autonomy in this world (to the extent that any of us can in a system that makes meeting basic needs so hard), but we should all be "too old" to listen to people who want us to feel like we're obsolete. I'm 33 and I was stuck for a long time and I'm trying to start over. I have to fight the idea that it's not worth it. The thing is, it's not too late until it's too late. I hope you find your fun again.

At 29 I moved overseas, started a new career, and traveled all over the world having the time of my life. It was so much more fun than my teenage years and 20s. I just turned 40 and can't wait to see what my 40s are like as I am doing another career change and still living overseas. You're probably too plugged into online youth culture + need to make friends a bit older than you and/or consume content from people older than you if you are feeling this way because I promise you your fun years are not behind you. Mindset is truly everything- don't fall into the trap of beating yourself up until you feel awful!

I do still look young, and when I see people who are 26-29 already complaining about high-blood pressure and back pain I tell them that isn't supposed to be normal. I'm way healthier than I was in my twenties because I started to care about myself. One other thing I noticed, is how people of my age seem to hate the idea of aging and many of them do party drugs to have the energy to party still "feel" young. I think that's a bit absurd, if I don't feel like going out so much now at night, it's because my priorities are different, not because I'm old. I changed my inner discourse because I didn't want to use the word "old" or "boring", I just say politely I want to go for a walk on a Sunday morning. All I can think is now is how to be a glamorous old lady if the world isn't blown to pieces, I hope we can all achieve that!

The past 20 years have actually been fantastic for me. I've really focused on being fit and strong, and being healthy seems to have had a beneficial effect on my mental health. I don't dye my hair (and it looks fabulous!), have no desire for plastic surgery (I mean, if a fairy came to me and could get rid of my jowls with the wave of a magic wand I wouldn't say "no"), and at 5'3" and 110 lbs, I am in the best condition of my life. We really need more representation of older people who are living well. I truly think life gets better as we get older. As we get older, we will have more income, less debt and if we have kids, they'd be older and more independent, so we'll get back some of the free-time.

So I began going grey around 31/32 and dyed my hair, I'm 45 now, stopped dyeing, chose to grow out my grays, and cut it into a pixie. I've gotten so many compliments (shockingly, imo), but I think this is so because this look is "in" which I did not realize, I was just simply wanting to accept my greys and honestly, my age! I WANT to look & my age, One girl asked me about this and she was shocked that I did not want to look younger. No, I'm not into anti-aging, I'm into accepting my age and looking the best I can at any age. That means taking care of myself in every way. I also do not use TikTok, barely use FB & only really use KZbin. I've always been pretty secure in who I am, so this anti- aging mentality of the younger generations doesn't really phase me.
