In this short clip I show you how soffit, rafter and ridge vents work together to create an attic ventilation system. Keep in mind that every house is different and this is not the only type of ventilation system but this is what worked for me. Thanks for watching.

These are far better than no venting. One thing I can mention to you is cardboard sopra rafters vents. They are much better than the styro ones, for a few reasons. One is that they are stapled to the truss/rafter rather than the roof ply. Just incase roof deck is changed later down the road as it should in a couple roofs anyways. Also they are infinitely adjustable. As in 16 to 24 OC spacing, or even just when the bastards installing your truss weren’t very accurate, you can cut/fold these. They come with pre-made perforated tear lines. Also if needed you can cut between them with a straight blade. And you can also bend along the cardboards corrugations. But the biggest thing is they install down to the top wall plate. Batt insualtion lets air move through. So while soffits are drawing some portion of that air is going into the batt, drastically reducing its effectiveness and eventually leading to mould where the cold winter air hits the warm batt. The cardboard rafter vents rise vertically and then fold to accommodate the roof pitch. Regardless the height of your rafter heels, and the pitch of your roof these things work. I’m in Canada and need R60 attic. But down on old houses you might only get a few inches of height. It’s already such a weak point, then the batts exposed to cold, as well as compressed (which kills R value as the air entrapment is what makes insulating power) is adding to the issue. You can then blow your loose fill right to the cardboard. Better R value, less cutting and stuffing, and less cold air penetration.

Best roof is ice house roof Run 1x4 on top of deck same direction as rafters then do a 2nd plywood deck.. the 1x4 create an air flow between the 2 decks from ridge to peak. Yes it more expensive but if you are replacing roof anyway strip down to the deck and add the 1x4 and the new second deck. Shingles will last … provides an insulation method to house so attic well ventilated. Prevents the heat / cool loss of the house

Do you cut a long strip of the old ply deck at the bottom to allow air to enter?

Vented near bend If u already had soffit vents. Just cut slots in bottom deck. To allow air into between decks.

@@justinstevenson2061 yes or they have metal trim that 1/2 under 1st row shingles 1/2 to face of soffit. It basically an easier way of put a plywood ceiling in attic. U see all the time the foam sheets that go from inside attic bottom of deck down to soffits to allow insulation to not block the air flow from soffit into attic.
