Given how Somalia is more ethnically homogenous than most African countries you'd think that would give them an advantage. But instead Somalia has been in a state of civil war longer than I've been alive.

I work in government and I once had a Somali official visit my office. He was highly educated and ambitious. He was determined to make his country a better place for all of its citizens and it's the reason why he visited my country. He wanted to learn from our experience and try to apply it in his own country and I could see why. Our countries have lots of similarities in term of geography and socioeconomic conditions. Even personally I had lots of similarities with him, we have the same first name, we have similar hobby, and I found him to be very likeable in general. It's been years now and I'm still waiting for a good news from Somalia. I'm sure he's still working hard now. Stay strong, my Somali brothers. Yeah, finally having a permanent central government again definitely helps (even if it only has real control over about 2/3 of the country). You can see it when looking at Mogadishu on Google Earth: there’s been significant reconstruction and brand-new development over about the last decade. The main stadium got renovated, the airport got a new terminal, even a mall.

Somalia never intended to invade the densely populated highlands of Ethiopia though? They only wanted the Somali inhabited desert planes that they were actually succeeding in taking before Cuba and Russia joined against them. They didn't need to take Addis Ababa they juts needed to secure the Ogaden (which would've been easy as they had the full support of the locals) and then hold it against the Ethiopian military till they gave up.
@matro8147
@matro8147 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately in the eyes of modern geopolitics it doesn’t matter. Ogaden was a territory under Ethiopias jurisdiction by international law, and unless you were USA or Russia those laws are written in stone. The best we Somalis could have hoped for at the time was a proxy war where we aid the locals and push for a sovereign state. An invasion was not only unnecessary but it weaken Somalia’s military against dealing with internal strife. Im indifferent to Siads regime but I would prefer security by our own people over African union troops and other shisheeye. Somalia was not responsible for NFD or Ogadenia anymore than it was realized for Djibouti. Wadan iyo dad waa kala labo IMO.

0:05 as a Ghanaian I hate that Africa has become synonymous with starvation. The only reason that has happened is because of the Horn of Africa. The only other territory that had starvation issues - due to a civil war blockade - was Biafra in Nigeria during the 70s. Africans have tons of food and very little food insecurity except in the Horn of Africa - that’s the region with continued food issues due to drought, economic issues, or poor food distribution during civil wars which seem endless there. I’ll take that Africans is seen as poor globally, and I hope that changes. The food things bugs me as it’s not true for most Africans - try jallof rice man! 😆

IGNORANCE IS BLISS Somalia’s strategic geographical location makes it a major player in world economy, international trade, and security. Somalia is a vast country covering over 246,000 square miles with longest coastal in African continent. The majority of commercial ships and vessels travelling around the world pass through Somalia’s Indian Oceans, earning Somalia the nickname “the world’s economic artery.” Not only is Somalia in a strategic location but God has blessed it with natural resources. Somalia it has untapped oil, gas, gold and many different kind of sea and land minerals. It has a huge blue economy potential stretching from red sea to Indian Ocean.

Like the caste system in India and religious zealotry in the middle east, clans are an ancient idea. Clans were good in ancient times when you needed your family to have your back. Today, the concepts of property ownership and common laws trump clans. But people in power like power, and clan heads have power. Very few leaders in history have ever given up power willingly. Somalia will likely fight with itself until the neighboring countries get rich enough to set things straight. Either Somalia will be pacified and turned into a vassal, or it will be pacified and left independent simply so that business in the region can prosper. It is tough for a nation to industrialize if their neighbor still lives like Mongol Warlords.

I’m Somali and I want to say, much of this video is either outdated or simply misinformation. Somalia is not the lawless anarchy it was in the 90’s and 00’s anymore. All of the warlords have been defeated. All the clan fighting has stopped long ago. All the militias and fraction leaders are long gone. Somaliland is not 3x richer than the rest of Somalia. In fact the currency used there is almost worth nothing compared to the one used across the other states of Somalia. Somaliland only has one thing over the rest of Somalia and that is stability. There is more money being made in Mogadishu than almost all of Somaliland. Literally 3/4th of Somaliland does not even want to secede! All that is wrong with Somalia today is instability. And the main reason for that is Al-Shabaab who are being fought tooth to nail at the very moment. The days of anarchy are behind us.

There are multiple factors for the current state of Somalia 1. LACK OF A VISIONARY AND COMPETENT LEADER The country has been lacking a competent and visionary leader since it got independency in 1960, a leader who is free from tribalistic mindset. Every leader who has ever came to power always has that tribalistic mindset and those previous so called leaders only came to power because of their tribe and not because they're competent for the role they're elected in. 2. LACK OF TRUST AMONG THE MAIN SOMALI CLANS There are 3 main clans in Somalia Darod, Hawiye, and Isaq and each one of these clans would rather destroy the country than see a leader from other 2 clans to be in power. Isaqs clan who mainly reside in the northern part of the country (former British Somaliland) actually want to be independent from the rest of Somalia mainly due to i) the give up of their independency in 1960 in return of nothing and ii) the Isaq genocide in 1988 committed by the former dictator Siyyad Barre. The other 2 clans (Darod and Hawiye) are more in number and also control larger part of land than the Isaqs, and these two gives you a competitive edge when it comes to the Somali politics. This is why every president since 1960 has been either from Darod or Hawiye clans and this made the Isaqs in the north feel betrayed, because remember the Somalia you know today is made up of two regions (the Northern regions or British Somaliland who was under the British rule and Italian Somaliland who was under Italian rule) and when British Somaliland got independency from Britain on 26 June 1960 they voluntarily joined the Italian Somaliland in the South to form what was known at that time the Somali Republic. The Isaqs, who are the majority in the British Somaliland, realized, soon after the union, that they made a mistake because they realized that all the important power positions were grabbed by the Hawiye and Darod clans in the South/Italian Somaliland and this is why a small number of military generals, from the north/british Somaliland, attempted a coup in 1961 (not sure the exact date). Another reason for the lack of trust between those 3 clans is what happened during and after the rule of the former Dictator Siyyad Barre, who is from the Darod clan, and his regime has committed a lot of serious crimes like the genocide in the North in 1988, also there was a major fight between the Darods and Hawiye in the southern part of the country after the collapse of the Siyyad Barre regime in 1991 and this is why there is no trust between the Somali clans and this is why each clan would rather destroy the country than see another clan to have that power that might be used against them.

In my view as a Somali I think our country is lacking strong youth who are willing to scarifies for their nation. Youth are the backbone of every nations, but in our case its much difficult because of tribe, clan, imagine kids are taught about tribes in young age, so what do you expect from him or her to uplift the country?
