The only option left for Sri Lanka is to get massively bailed out by international institutions with dollars and introducing very restrictive reforms (higher taxes, less public spending). We might even see Siri Lanka paying for oil or whatever they need with tea or whatever they produce instead of dollars. Anyway this surely won't be liked by the people but at the current situation it's the only option, add to that the risk of next civil wars and many years of 0 tourists who won't travel to such unstable country. The other possibility might be China bailing them out for allowing to operate military port or maybe even India, who knows.

Just to add a few details about the civil war There are two types of Tamil ethnicities in Sri Lanka: 1) native Tamils and 2) Indian Tamils. Native Tamils live mostly in northern and easter regions of Sri Lanka, while Indian Tamils live in central regions of Sri Lanka where tea plantations are located. The secessionist movement was mostly carried out by groups related to native Tamils, but both ethnicities were facing discrimination in the second half of the 20th century. After the independence, there was a rivalry between Sinhalese and Tamil political groups. The legislature (parliament) was dominated by Sinhalese, and Tamils requested more representation in the parliament. In 1956, a right-wing Sinhalese party got elected and passed the "Sinhala Only" act that made the Sinhalese language the official language, replacing English, which is the 'bridge' language. Overnight, the government conducted activities in Sinhalese, and many Tamils serving in the government lost jobs. Tamils and Tamil political parties opposed this act. Multiple riots broke out during the late 1950s, but leaders of both ethnicities failed to reach a solution, and the discrimination didn't stop. Two decades later, various Tamil groups started arming themselves with the aim of creating a separate state in the northern and eastern regions. There were multiple skirmishes between separatist groups and Sri Lanka defense forces. But things got worst. in July 1983 when an ambush on an army convoy killed 13 personnel. These soldiers were brought to Colombo, and Sinhalese mobs started attacking Tamils and their businesses. Many Tamils migrated to countries like Canada and United States. With this incident, there were more clashes between separatist groups and government forces, starting the Sri Lankan Civil War.

You can often assume that corruption is abound when a country falls this hard. Small countries that rely on import usually strengthened their economy on two particular thing: manufacturing of goods that require special experise (f.e: Liechstenstein produce false teeth and Taiwan produce chips and electronic supplies) or banking (Hong Kong, Singapore, Bahamas, Panama). Small countries that dont have any other strong sector besides tourism can easily die when tourism is fucked. However people always need good and people always need place to keep the money However the ongoing wars obviously make foreign investors reluctant to trust their money in Sri Lanka. If only back then people could realize early that they ought be united and not to consider themselves as more superior than others, Sri Lanka could have been rich by now

SL rupee collapsed from 200 per dollar to 330 per dollar and has stabilized at that level. That has made importing harder and have automatically balanced the current account and even created surplussed for the central bank to build reserves. No shortage of anything now, if you have the money, you can buy anything. No queues for Petrol, no power cuts etc. Inflation is low at around 1-2% now, but was above 50% last year and prices have level at those highs. The problem is prices of everything is 2-3x higher than they were 2 years back. People's incomes have not gone up. My guess is, if all the tough reforms go ahead as planned and they succeed, incomes would go up over the next 4-6 years so that peoples living standards can catch up to 2019 levels in 2027-28.

3:40 What? That's not even the reason for emigration. A significant chunk of Sri Lankans work in the middle east because of better pay and they don't have degrees for the most part. The remainder emigrate to US, UK, NZ, AUS etc for better opportunities. Demographics is not really the reason for that lol. 9:47 False. Chinese contractors were involved in the development. The President' built an airport in his district probably to gain more support for himself. State-owned enterprises were and still are run inefficiently, employing many people and paying unnecessary bonuses. Energy isn't priced based on market movements, they're fixed. 10:42 That's also false. The government approached China to bail them out so that they can pay their upcoming ISBs which are just loans from the foreign debt markets.

Just need to make a comment of fertilizer thing that was talked in this video. Actually Sri Lanka has very fertilized soil. You can see it by using a world fertility map. But the problem is that the natural rice seeds produce less food and talks longer time to produce a harvest. So Sri Lankan farmers are used to cultivate genetically modified seeds, which produce more food in less time, but needs modern fertilizers. So, banning modern fertilizers means no food. Before banning, Sri Lankans should have learned the old ways of cultivating natural seeds.
@marcusaurelius84672 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't the companies that own the genetically modified seeds want farmers to be 100% dependent on them?
@rprLKA2 жыл бұрын
Those companies made sure that farmers are 100% depend on those seeds, because of the money I guess. As those seeds need modern fertilizers, after the fertilizers got banned, seeds did not grow in fields.

4:25 Sri Lanka's caste system is not the same as India's especially not the Sinhala. Govigama (farmers) are at the top, a second stratum consisting of Karavas (warriors and fishermen), Durava (toddy-tapping), Salugama (cinnamon peelers) with Rodiyas being untouchable at the bottom. 7:01 Sinhala-Tamil discord already sparked off in 1949 with the passage of a citizenship act that disenfranchised Indian Tamils settled in Sri Lanka. 7:28 Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972, not 1978 7:57 The tea workers are typically Indian Tamils (came/brought over during the British era), not from the older Tamil community which has been in Sri Lanka since at least 3rd century BC

3:35 for the boys not being loved part, in sri lanka, as of my experience being a sri lankan, It's quite true that sexism is hard af here. Even though teenage relationships seem pretty normal in high school or even middle school days of kids from anywhere else except asia, in Sri Lanka it is almost culturally illegal to do so. The main reason being that adults think this interrupts their education which it would as the education here is one of the hardest and the probably the most outdated since they still teach the 2016 syllabus. For Sri Lanka to develop, the mindset of people should developed along with the education. (But Sri Lankans are pretty hardy on changing themselves' mindsets)
