@@MusicCatsandCoffee hahaha! Those songs as you might find are actually like anti-depressants for the depressed! Speaking for myself and millions of fans! Firstly you hear them and know you aren't alone and there's someone who feels the same, and that person is able to describe those feelings in ways that you can't, also Morrissey has a way of injecting humour in the mix, so many people describe those song lyrics as "dark" well he might use dark humour and he's very tongue in cheek and self deprecating but he's singing about real human experience, thoughts and feelings that most people, if they're honest with themselves, feel from time to time or have felt that way before, it's part of life, he gets a lot of shit for being depressing but well, he does suffer from depression! (Although he is much older and has said much happier than he was in The Smiths) there's much to know about Morrissey and I really hope you are able to ignore any negative, often inaccurate and ignorant comments that people like to make about him, just enjoy the music and what Morrissey brings!

When this album dropped (like a bomb) in 1984, I was 17 years old. I was a very, very shy person and struggled through high school and this song spoke to me on so many levels......I have been married now for 29 years. .... but I still come back to this song for nostalgic purposes . Well I Wonder is such a GEM of theirs

It does get pretty depressing with "Suffer Little Children", but in a different way. And probably only, if one knows the real life tragedies behind the lyrics. "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" (one of my favourites, not much bass there, but a great intro...) or "I Know it's Over" might fit better. "Meat is Murder" is another one - nothing to do with love, though. "This Night Has Opened My Eyes"... "Back to the Old House" has some nice bass too :) So many great songs to chose from. Some of Morrissey's lyrics are pretty on the nose, others are much more ambiguous and hard to tell what they were really about.

A cover version was used as the opening theme for the TV show Charmed that aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s on the WB Network. The reason the song sounds so modern is because it was one of the inspirations for Alternative and Grunge music in the 1990s.

"Timeless" is a good way to describe it. I only know how old it is because I heard it every now and then as I grew up in the 80s, but it still holds up today. I've never paid much attention to the lyrics, but thanks to you, I now know! They are very relatable, unfortunately. Out of curiosity, do you like "The Cure"? I think the two bands have some similarities in sound and depressing lyrical content.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee Yeah, the lyrics are really good. They're sparse, but they get the point across. Those are good pop hits by The Cure, but you should listen to "100 Years" by them. It's a completely different sound from those, with bleak and depressing lyrics. I mean, the first line is, "It doesn't matter if we all die" and it only gets more uplifting from there. Great song!

Tatu covered the song and made it their own but the best version remains the Smiths version. It was the first song i heard from them a long time ago and was overwhelmed by the song and like many others by Morrissey's voice like Mazzy star Hope Sandoval's voice overwhelmed me years later. In that short period they excisted the Smiths created so many great songs. Is how soon is now their magnum opus? I think it is although they created so many other great songs like well i wonder, reel around the fountain, that joke isn't funny anymore, William, it was really nothing, death of a disco dancer, the queen is dead, last night i dreamt somebody loved me, meat is murder, i know it's over, asleep, there is a light that never gets out and this small one...Please please please let me get what i want. That's an incredible best of that makes you realise how exceptional they were. Each song is unique and timeless. I love New Wave music - Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode. I should mention that Depeche Mode is one of Pete Loeffler’s favorite 80s bands. I’ve mentioned CheVelle’s cover of DMs song “It’s No Good”, but I am fine with you checking out the original too if you don’t know it. I didn’t realize it was an unrequited love song until Pete sang it because of the way David Gahan sings the song. Anyway, the beginning of this song was sampled in a very annoying song called “Hippychick.” Every time I hear the opening, I hold my breath wondering if it’s this song I love or the one I hate. LOL Today I realized I had most of the lyrics wrong. I thought he was saying he was the sun and the earth and the summoner of nothing in particular. 😂

Forgive me if I am going over old ground here but I only just stumbled upon this video. Dont forget, How Soon Is Now was originally recorded and released as a B side. 4 or 5 months later it was released as an A side single. One of the many head scratching moments from band and record company during their short but brilliant career. Half A Person and Well I Wonder are absolute gems of The Smiths back catalogue if you have not checked them out already. Dark and moving yet at the same time uplifting and full of joy. Nobody nailed that quite like these 4 lads. The Smiths were the band of my teenage years back during the 80s. They continue to be the band of my life. Morrissey, during this period had so many top notch quotes, lines and lyrics that have found their way on to many peoples skin as tattoos. My favourite of all being from Rubber Ring, "but don't forget the songs that made you cry and the songs that saved your life". This relates to every Smiths song, for me, right there. Bonus points also go to his words from I Know It's Over, "it''s so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind. Just beautiful. I loved your reaction to this. Made my day. X

Tatu -Russian 'lesbian' duo (they both have kids now I think) covered it in the early 2000's and it's actually pretty good. This is one of the more upbeat songs by the smiths - try 'I know its over' - many tears were shed. in an 4empty bed. Nice work x
