You had my full attention for 16 minutes. I came in knowing very little to having both a better understanding of the topic & an appreciation of your fantastic teaching style. Each part you explained provided a depth of information I had hoped for & you delivered. I’m anticipating & intrigued to listen to not only part two, but also any other instructional videos you have available.

I am just starting to dive into sound recording and starting to read about these basics. My thought as i was reading was that sound moved circularly instead of the up and down graphs that i see. Your shovel demonstration really helped me to see how sound actually travels, where it is an up and down, but is also an across the plane. Thank you for your easy to understand explanations of this!
@armadillo854 жыл бұрын
Near perfect pace, which I find almost impossible to find in a documentary. Graphics and visuals are both intuitive and easy to understand logically. I got a cliffhanger feeling in my gut a few times, which is also rare for me while watching a documentary. Really nice work.

This was incredible and drastically increased my understanding of how sound works. I really liked the envelope / package metaphor, and I think continuing with that metaphor or using a different one would have helped me understand overtones better, which is the only thing in the video I feel a bit fuzzy on conceptually. Thank you so much! Super grateful for this content!

Excellent video tutorial! You simplified a rather complex subject using real/actual examples to illustrate and “amplify” your concepts. You’re a gifted teacher! Like they say - you brought the cookie jar from the top shelf to the floor so everyone can partake. Thanks Adam! I appreciate your gift to us. Btw, if you can simplify how a compressor, gate and reverb works and how to use them effectively, I’d (& our Sunday school music and sound team) be forever grateful to you!
@MrMcMath2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I have a video about how compressors work here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYCoY4uJg56ap6s A noise gate is pretty much the opposite of a compressor. A compressor will attenuate signal ABOVE the threshold while a gate will attenuate signal BELOW the threshold. Reverb is its own can of worms. How it works depends on the type: spring, plate, room reflections, etc. As far as using each of them effectively, it's really about understanding how they work and then TONS of practice and experimentation. Hope that helps, lmk if you have any questions.

When the speaker is pushed all the way out, you have a negative pressure. The pressure is in phase with acceleration, not with displacement. This is such a common misconception, and I have explained to many a student and acoustic engineer.

Love this video! You take a very complex concept and make it very accessible. Only one question: You mention "air particles" sitting in front of a speaker, which are moved (compressed) together by the [magnetic?] vibrations of the speaker.... but *what is* an "air particle"? It's clearly not something we can see... so what are these invisible particles that are moving? Thanks for the lesson!
@MrMcMath2 жыл бұрын
The air particles I'm referring to are the molecules that make up the "fluid" of air all around us. For example, if you put your hand in front of your face and blow on it, you're feeling the air particles rushing past your hand. I'm no chemist but I believe it's made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, maybe some hydrogen? The vibrations the speaker creates are mechanical energy pushing those molecules back and forth. The speaker is a transducer, meaning it turns electrical energy (electrical impulses sent through to wire ) into mechanical energy (the speaker physically moving back and forth). Hope that answers your question :)

Hey... this was really cool. I'm in a rabbit hole right now because I am about to teach my second graders about sound and I like to increase my own understanding before I start something new. I was with you until the end... the only thing I never really understood was how adding the different frequencies to the sine wave created the different looking wave. However, I have little background knowledge on this subject so it's probably not your fault. I thought this video was excellent!!
