I hate when people act like these types of camps have gone away in America. They still are kicking in several states and even states where it’s illegal the same practices still happen under a dif name. Many camps that are for “disturbed” or misbehaving kids may be used for kids with actual behavioral issues but a lot of times that “behavioral problem” is them being gay or trans.

Board Girls is an example of I see what they were going for but their execution was horrid and they missed the mark horribly- it is very telling they haven't tried to do anything blantantly trans since. The problem is South Park likes to go to extreemes to point out why the argument is BS but when the bad faith arguments being used against trans people are the same extreemes used in satires of these bad faith arguments it doesn't work. That is why people think "The Cissy" and "Board Girls" are transphobic when they were really about pointing and laughing at these bad faith arguments and saying "That's just BS and clearly not reality"

Straight camp is torture. It’s cruel, and evil and disgusting. The scene where Bradley is about to jump, and says, “I’ll never be normal.” how Butters replies, “You’re perfectly normal, Bradley.” It’s speaking to the audience that being gay is perfectly normal and natural, and you’re normal. Trey and Matt are good people, like genuinely. If they just had an episode that argued a completely obvious point that “Being gay is totally okay.” Then people who disagree won’t watch it, or they’ll simply just ignore the shows obvious message. But mixing the message in with edgy humor is South Park’s way of communicating good values without making people who are blinded by bigotry to see that their way of thinking is cruel and wrong in certain ways. Butters uses their logic against them in his speech. “I wasn’t confused until you started telling me I was!” And he says, “If I’m bi-curious, and I’m made from God, then that means God must be a little bi-curious himself.” Which works perfectly as an argument against people who say that being gay is “wrong” in some way, even though it’s not harming anyone, and it’s not causing any problems for society, and it’s been exhibited in animals, and it’s not connected to morality in the slightest. People say it’s evil, but it’s because they need some sort of justification for hating them, because it “goes against God’s plan.” But if people are born bi-curious, or gay, it must be because God made them that way because they were made in his image. The truth is that there is no justification for disliking gay people, and you using anything as leverage to hate them can be refuted by logic, science, or just by simply seeing that it’s normal and fine and natural. Some people are gay, some people are straight, and it’s okay for us to be different.

I fully agree, i do think that one area where matt and trey have a bad take is with transgender people though, every representation of a trans person in the show has been bad, first mr./mrs. Garrison transitioning because he was a gay man (and them demonizing gender affirming surgeries in that episode), making women uncomfortable in places like bathrooms and gay bars by talking about their vagina, and becoming a lesbian after transition and then de-transitioning just to become a stand in for trump, then their entire portrayal of caitlyn jenner (except the bit where she keeps hitting people with her car, thats really funny and a good reference), and then that person in the womens sports episode. They dont seem to truly believe that trans people are actually trans, that trans people are transitioning either due to stupidity or to get treated better in some way.

@@lunatheluma3804 Yes, those scenes are shitty, but I feel like the episode with strong woman’s experiences with that guy was more like a message about your own morals getting in the way of confronting certain issues affecting people. Because in that episode, the character who was labeled as “transgender” turned out not to actually be transgender, and they just wanted to show that they were stronger than Strong Woman, and all women because they were Strong Woman’s Ex. That, and Strong Woman says in an interview before the competition that she’s competed with many transgender women before in the Olympics, and that’s she’s happy to normalize transgender athletes and stuff. She treats it with respect and decency because she knows that being transgender doesn’t necessarily make you have an “advantage” or “disadvantage” in sports. It’s more attuned to your physicality and genetics and hormonal levels. Secondly, if we look at the episode “The Cissy” it’s Cartman being “transgender” to have his own bathroom and be selfish, and Wendy literally says, “Cartman, there are real people dealing with issues with their gender identity and you-“ and, Wendy, being one of the most reasonable characters in the show, beats Cartman at his own game by going by Wendyl, and using the transgender bathroom. There’s also a scene with Mr. Garrison after he detransitions where he says, “You can’t be a woman if you can’t give birth.” And one of the teachers replies, “but my wife is infertile.” And he says back, “Well then you’ve been fucking a dude.” Making fun of the logic that people make against transgender people about them, “never being a woman” or “never being a man.” There’s also a thing with Randy dressing up as a woman, and making music, and singing in the woman’s bathroom, and he gets to experience transphobia from people who say that he “shouldn’t be in the woman’s restroom” (they perceive him as a trans woman) and instead of it treating them as the reasonable ones, they treat Randy as the one who’s the victim. So, to me at least, the show does treat transgender people as real people in some scenes and stuff. What I’d like to see would be an actual transgender character that reacts to some of the things from Mr. Garrison to make a clearer statement on how there’s a difference between transgender people, and Mr. Garrison.

@T0B3573R Yeah, the Cissy is a pretty good episode when it comes to the trans bathroom issue, but I would argue that the sports episode with Strongwoman doesn't do enough to make the distinction between actual trans athletes and the "trans" character they have, and the message ends up coming across that men are entering womens sports as transwomen in order to beat women and tear them down. I feel it could have benefited from having a real trans character also competing and pointing out that he never should have been allowed to compete in a serious women's sporting event anyway due to not meeting HRT requirements or something, just have an actual trans athlete character to show that this isn't an issue with trans people, and that there are systems in place to keep sports fair that aren't just banning transwomen, like what they did with randy vs cartman in the cissy (even though randy isn't really trans but whatever). As is, it can come across as denouncing trans women in sports as a whole, which is extra permanent now with the Imane Khelif situation (despite Imane being a cis woman anyway)

@@lunatheluma3804 I agree. Sometimes South Park doesn’t do enough to make the distinction between their comedic take on something controversial and having it have genuinely good characters or characters that don’t necessarily fit the theme of the mockery character or whatever. Because otherwise people will take it out of context and use this character as a way of understanding Trey and Matt’s true stance on that subject.

The fact they decided to focus on the issues of conversion therapy just shows they wanted to show people those issues, to show how harmful it really is, and that is a VERY supportive thing to do. I love that episode and have shown it to my dad when he threatened me with conversion therapy. This is exactly how I feel. Which is ironic considering my time being raised in the latter day saint church. It has always gone down as either being a cult or super fanatical Christianity. Because of this, I was exposed at a very young age about the horrors of how far fanatical beliefs can ruin people's lives and cover it up as "Christianity" by people who spoke out in hate of the latter day saint church. My parents and grandparents have always taught me that no matter what, we have our right as a human being to choose what to believe in, and no man has a right to judge anyone for their beliefs unless it is to cause harm to a certain group. So imagine my face when I hear of conversion camps, or certain forms of "therapy' and the discrimination of certain people at the age of like 9 or 10.

Hi, I'm autistic and I worked in the ABA field for 2 years. Applied Behavior Analysis is used in many, many places: the classroom, addiction therapy, training of any other animal... The list goes on. Any time you have ever used a chart to tally points for a game? Token economy, that's part of ABA. Applied Behavior Analysis is a wonderful tool that shows us that people will work for what they are motivated for, and patience and reinforcement are more effective teaching methods than hitting your kids and shaming them. That said, there was a reason I was only a therapist for two year, and that's because most of the "therapists" in the field are neurotypical people freshly out of high school. Don't know if you knew that, but you literally need NO SCHOOLING aside from a 40 hour online training. That's the reason that the field is shit, it's because it's filled with people that are too apathetic to be in it.

I had recently come out as lesbian to some of the kids at my church, it wasn’t anything serious, I just mentioned it in passing during a conversation and this was the first time it was coming up since then. Me and Lyra were in our room, we had just gone to bed and we were supposed to be asleep. She then asked me the weirded question I have ever been asked as a member of the lgbtq community(so far), “are you gonna go to hell?”. Yup. I asked her what she meant and she told me that being gay was a sin and since I chose to be gay did that mean I was going to hell. She was genuinely asking me if I thought I would go to hell. I don’t remember what I said but small little 13 year old me was not expecting that. This is why I think it’s important that people are educated about lgbtq topics. I go to a church that actively uses being gay friendly as a marketing strategy and she had been going to my church since she was little and she still thought I was going to hell.

I was born with chronic illness / disability and I’m lgbt. This show taught me how I can make fun of my disabilities in a way that shows how absurd some people’s line of questioning is. “Oh is that your heart surgery scar?” (Down my sternum) “what, this? Oh no, I was bored” “My mom’s 3D printer fcked up” But it also taught me that I can legit make fun of things I actually hate dealing with as a way of coping and idk. It really helped me out A LOT because wow people are ruthless.

I don’t believe they’re homophobic, but can anyone who’s seen more of the show tell me if they have any trans characters that are good representation? Ik the teacher being trans and then homophobic is a statement but I haven’t seen them portray a decent trans character.

Garrison's arc is very transphobic, but the one moment I really like is the very end of the arc where, after proclaiming that you're only a real woman if you can have kids, he tells a man that his infertile wife is a man. It's one of the moments where the show makes it clear that this kind of binary thinking is absurd. The Cissy is a generally good episode. It starts with a transgender bathroom proposal and ends with a bathroom just for transphobes to use. The main criticism with that episode is that both Cartman and Randy pretend to be trans in order to use the womens' restroom, so even though Randy's plot is a great foil against Cartman, it still isn't representation. Board Girls was an altogether terrible episode and it's their most recent too. None of the "trans" characters in South Park were ever actually trans. There is no real trans representation.

You can play as a character who is explicitly trans in one of the video games, but that's entirely up to player choice and not really its own character. A lot of the characters also seem to experiment with gender identity through their roleplay in that game, and Mr Mackey will say that it's perfectly fine to be trans/nonbinary if you made your character either of those things.

as someone transgender who was terrified of ending up at one of these camps i like how they bring awareness to this dark topic while still making it outrageous and unhinged. i was actually kicked out by my stepdad earlier this year because i "refused to stop being trans" like sir i tried. i tried so danm hard to not be queer and it only made me want to kill myself. I'm on my own now and this has been the best year for my mental health since i was born. IM FREEEEEEEEEEEE

Hey, I'm a queer person and I have to say that I'm not offended by anything they say about gay people I'm just annoyed on how we are shown as Stereotypes. It's not really offensive, its just unoriginal and I know they can be more clever than that. Also they chose to do amazing research on conversion therapy but did absolutely none on trans people in more recent seasons. I'm not offended I'm just incredibly disappointed because I know they can do better. I was a huge fan and am still a huge fan of older seasons it's just that they are too old and tired to make anything orginal and thought provoking anymore.
